Advanced Path-Pharmacological Foundations Discussion
Welcome to the Clinical Practice Experience (CPE) for this course. The CPE for the Master of Science in Nursing program core courses consist of a variety of semi-structured activities. By completing all the activities and evidence listed within this document, and earning a grade of “Competent,” you will earn 40 indirect CPE hours for this course.
CPE Objective:
You will take on the role of a graduate degree-prepared nurse who has advanced knowledge of the pathophysiology and pharmacology associated with human disease needed to explain complex health information to colleagues and to translate that complex information into disease-specific education for consumers that is simple and easy to understand. Advanced Path-Pharmacological Foundations Discussion
In this CPE, you will experience the role of a graduate degree–prepared nurse in three phases:

1b. | Feedback and Synthesis Improvement Plan:
● Research the pathophysiology associated with one of the following five diseases: Alzheimer disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory infections, nephritis, or suicide. Use your course, textbooks, online resources, and other resources as needed. ● Using the information gathered from your research, prepare a one-page synthesis for one of the above diseases. Your synthesis should include a simple description of the pertinent points for your chosen condition, including pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic methods. In the synthesis text, cite the resources you used to write your synthesis. Include links in the text of your synthesis to cite where you obtained information. ● Meet with one or more healthcare providers or colleagues to present and obtain feedback on your synthesis. Ask for feedback regarding the clarity and accuracy of your synthesis. Document the feedback you received in your portfolio separately from the synthesis, and describe what, if any, changes you made to the synthesis. Next, use this feedback to improve your advanced professional nurse or colleague pathophysiology synthesis and include just this improved synthesis in your portfolio. |

● Consider the following in your reflection: ○ the process you followed to complete the synthesis and what you might do differently next time, if anything ○ any new information you learned ○ what you found most challenging about completing and presenting the synthesis ○ the feedback you received on your synthesis and how you used the feedback to improve your synthesis
● Watch two peers’ videos, and provide written, constructive feedback. ● Take a screenshot of your video and screenshots of your two peers’ videos with your written feedback included. ● Write a brief reflection summary of your Phase 1 GoReact https://lrps.wgu.edu/provision/173986768 video reflection. |

2b | Feedback and Synthesis Improvement Plan:
● Research the pathophysiology and pharmacological treatments associated with one of the following five causes of death: heart disease, accidents, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, or stroke. Utilize your textbooks, online resources, and other resources as needed. ● Prepare a one-page, consumer-focused synthesis for one of the five diseases listed above. Your synthesis should be a simple description of pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, commonly prescribed medications, and appropriate lifestyle changes. Include links in the text of your synthesis to cite where you obtained disease-specific information. ● Meet with one or more healthcare consumers (e.g., students, peers, family, etc.) to present your synthesis. Ask the individual(s) to provide feedback regarding the simplicity, clarity, and understanding of your synthesis and reference to lifestyle changes. Present this feedback in your portfolio separately from the synthesis, along with how you improved your synthesis as a result. ● Use this feedback to improve your patient/health consumer pathophysiology-pharmacology synthesis that integrates lifestyle changes and include this improved synthesis in your e-portfolio. 3b | Feedback and Synthesis Improvement Plan:
● Research the pathophysiology and medications associated with one of the six Shadow Health patients you assessed in this course. Utilize your textbooks, online resources, and other resources as needed. ● Prepare a one-page synthesis that includes a description of the pertinent points of the Shadow Health patient’s condition, including pathophysiology, common medications used to treat the condition, and any non-pharmacological treatment options. ● Use the information in this synthesis to educate an advanced professional nurse or colleague. Ask these individuals to provide feedback regarding the clarity and correctness of your synthesis. Use this feedback to improve your treatment plan synthesis and upload both the improved treatment plan and your colleague’s feedback to your e-portfolio. |
|
3c | Feedback and Synthesis Improvement Treatment Plan:
● Using the information gathered from your research of the pathophysiology and pharmacology for the Shadow Health patient, develop a patient treatment plan to educate the Shadow Health patient selected for this activity. Your synthesis should include a description of the treatment plan, including diagnostic tests and common medications used to treat each condition, as well as potential medication side effects. ● Present your Shadow Health patient treatment plan to one or more healthcare providers or colleagues. Ask for feedback regarding the clarity and correctness of your synthesis. ● Use this feedback to improve your treatment plan synthesis for healthcare consumers and upload both the improved treatment plan and your colleague’s feedback to your e-portfolio. |
