Advocating For The Nursing Role In Program Design and Implementation

Nurses have become key stakeholders in today’s healthcare setting. Over the years, the importance and role have extended beyond delivering patient bedside care to include advocacy and policy implementation. According to Risling & Risling, 2020), due to their vast understanding of patients’ needs and spending much of their time in direct contact with patients and communities, they are best positioned to advocate for better patient care, program design, and implementation. This paper reflects (in an interview response format) on nurses’ advocacy roles in a specific identified program design and implementation. Advocacy And Policy Implementation Assignment Discussion

About the healthcare program cost and projected outcomes: The program’s focus is diabetes management and education, with the objectives being to improve the health outcomes of the affected patients via patient education, lifestyle management, and effective medication management. The program’s projected cost includes the production of education materials and the human resources of experts/human resources to undertake the education program while monitoring its progress. Key projected outcomes include minimal or reduced patient hospitalization due to diabetes-related complications, better life quality and improved glycemic control.

Who is the target population for the program? The program’s primary targets are patients diagnosed with diabetes types 1 and 2 across different ages and socio-economic statuses.

What is the nurse’s role in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Nurses’ input in the program design entails utilizing their expertise to design specific age group education materials. For example, they can categorize the education material depending on age groups, i.e. older people, working class and adolescents. On the other hand, they collaboratively design the program curriculum by factoring in patient diversity regarding culture, age, education, and literacy levels.

What is my role as an advocate for the target population in the identified healthcare program? Do you have input in design decisions? How else do you impact design? Advocacy And Policy Implementation Assignment Discussion

As an advocate for the target population of diabetes patients, I make sure the adopted practices and material for education purposes are patient-based, with the target population’s preferences well factored to promote patient-defined interventions. Regarding input in the design program, I provide an understanding of the diversity of the patients as well as consider feedback from the patients to inform tailored programs. Finally, as an advocate, I highlight possible barriers to the designing team, including socio-economic factors, literacy, geographical location, etc., which would help the designing team develop more patient-driven interventions and education materials.

What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between the design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples? The implementation stage of the program would entail the actual undertaking of education. This would be multifaceted in that it will take different forms, such as programs in social halls, campaigns, individualized medication programs, and frontline educators (Lawler et al., 2019). For example, nurses will conduct counselling sessions for the target group at the hospital premises. Undertake community outreach programs to improve diabetes self-management practices. According to Nikitara et al. (2019), implementation entails implementing planned activities and working closely with the patients. The identified activities align with the program’s implementation phase, which in turn varies from design. Nurses exploit their expertise in designing levels to develop patient and evidence-based educational material for the target population. More so, they collaborate with other healthcare professionals to establish the definite workflow and protocols of the program. Advocacy And Policy Implementation Assignment Discussion

Who are the healthcare team members that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why? The program’s success will be attributed to the ability to integrate different stakeholders and positive teamwork among the players (Ten Ham-Baloyi, 2022). In addition to nurses, the proposed program would require input from different members of healthcare settings, including dieticians, social workers, community leaders, pharmacists, and physicians. The physicians will work with the nurses to adjust the patient’s medications; dieticians will provide counselling on nutrition matters, helping patients make the best possible food choices. Pharmacist will be key to the target group to ensure they practice the best medication management practices as they understand their mechanisms and possible side effects. Community leaders will communicate possible meetings in social halls and such. At the same time, the social workers will help address patients’ psychological facets impacting their adherence to treatment plans or proposed management plans.
