A legislation agenda for the opioid crisis is vital because the prevalence of opioid crisis is very high. According to Gomes et al (2018), 128 individuals in the US die to opioids overdose every day. The addiction and misuse of opioids is a serious national crisis impacting public health, along with the economic and social welfare. In 2017, over 47,000 Americans succumbed due to opioid overdose. In 2017, approximately 1.7 million individuals within the US had substance use disorders allied to prescription opioid pain relievers. According to the CDC, the economic burden of opioid misuse in the US is $78.5 billion annually (Hernandez et al., 2020). Moreover, opioid use is associated with adverse effects on the physical, emotional, and social aspects of individuals. The nurse has the role of preventing and identifying opioid misuse and abuse early enough to prevent opioid addiction. This is because nurses are the first contact healthcare practitioners with patients and they spend so much time with patients. Nurses also have the role to monitor the prescription of opioids by identifying patients who start becoming addicted to opioids. Nurses also have the role of providing treatment and raising awareness about the opioid crisis to communities. Lastly, nurses should act as advocates by supporting the implementation of suitable strategies and policies regarding opioid prescriptions, pain management, and treatment of opioid addiction (Mallick‐Searle & Chang, 2018).
Conclusion
Opioid has become a public health crisis due to the significant consequences such as opioid overdoses and the resulting deaths, opioid misuse, and the increasing rate of neonatal abstinence syndrome because of opioid use during pregnancy. Opioid use has a significant economic burden, among other social and health impacts. Therefore, the issue needs to be addressed.
