Separating nursing from technology, the most significant issue with Big Data by itself is the lack of data professionals and data security. Big Data handling tools evolve rapidly as modern technology grows, but professionals that were once fine-tuned may no longer be. It is often difficult to take a few college courses and fully understand or make sense of huge data sets. The second issue is the securing of the huge data sets from being compromised, as many organizations are still trying to understand how to store and use the information. Even the most encrypted networks can still be breached by malicious hackers and such large subsets of data are like a gold mine (Gaur, 2020, December). What happens when the credibility of big data is clustered with incompleteness and poorly written standards and processes? One of the primary issues with nursing and Big Data is that it does not indicate causality but relationship, meaning the subset of data can show large trends and patterns, but may not be able to satisfy new demands when poorly managed (Zhu et al., 2019). Examples of Research

One example of research that had the potential for great social impact, but failed to meet expectations was the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care, which essentially collected data from more than fifty thousand patients from Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital dating back to 2001. In 2017, it still remained to be the largest publicly available patient care subset of data related to ICU patients and was poised to be an important resource for clinical research. However, a lot of data does not always mean robust information, as when specific clinical questions were asked, it often resulted in a very small set of cases. This makes it impossible to answer any question with statistical confidence, thus making the database unhelpful within reason (Adibuzzaman et al., 2017). Barriers / Gaps

Some potential barriers for implementing the research analyzed are incentives and technological challenges (to some degree). There is a lack of incentives for most organizations to address most technological challenges, as some have seen with EHRs. It was developed for greatness and the purpose of knowledge advancements but has led to widespread unorganized, missing, and inadequate data for research (Adibuzzaman et al., 2017). As for gaps between evidence-based approaches and the research process, the primary gap is lapsing in communication between researchers and clinicians. Organizations can take approaches to facilitate communication between researchers and all medical parties but policies, procedures, and funding streams have to be addressed before moving forward (Mallonee et al., 2006).
