To Prepare:
Reflect on the Resources related to digital information tools and technologies.
Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.
Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery. Application Of Digital Technological In Healthcare Discussion
Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples. Healthcare Information Technology Trends
Digital transformation refers to changes that benefit society due to the innovative application of digital technological solutions (Stoumpos et al., 2023). In healthcare systems, adopting healthcare technology has significantly improved healthcare delivery, quality, and patient safety (Stoumpos et al., 2023). Also, it has improved medical problems, such as increased precision of diagnostic technology using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography scans. In my nursing practice, I have witnessed adopting and using electronic health records with fitted machine-learning capabilities that make clinical decision-support systems possible. Also, I have witnessed the application of telemedicine solutions in remote patient monitoring for patients with chronic diseases and increased adherence to medication and health literacy through clinic reminders and patient education.
The potential challenge and one of the biggest risks of using telemedicine and electronic health records are data breaches that could compromise patient privacy, security of sensitive patient information, and patient confidentiality (Shojaei et al., 2024). Addressing this challenge requires state-of-the-art security measures such as biometric scanners, intrusion detection systems, and impenetrable firewalls (Shojaei et al., 2024)Application Of Digital Technological In Healthcare Discussion. Other challenges or risks include improper regulation of healthcare technology leading to unstandardized Internet of Things systems that create major system compatibility and interoperability concerns on legislation (Junaid et al., 2022). Another risk is increased room for patient injury following improper handling of specialized equipment such as automated intravenous pumps. Despite the safety and legislation risks of healthcare technology, various benefits are associated with healthcare technology, such as the generation of safe multidimensional data that results in advances in the management of emerging diseases such as COVID-19 virus (Junaid et al., 2022). Also, the presence of drug-drug interaction alerts in electronic health records helps to enhance patient safety. Finally, attempts at regulating healthcare technology have resulted in the wide application of digital technology to medical problems with efficiency and highly desirable outputs.
Finally, I believe that machine learning and the application of artificial intelligence are the most promising technologies that will impact healthcare technology in nursing practice. The rationale for this choice is the infinite possibilities made possible using artificial intelligence, such as virtual clinical settings or simulations in nursing education, to enhance nursing students’ skills and knowledge. Artificial intelligence use in features like robotic surgeries promises high-efficiency operating settings and time with minimal injury to the patient. Also, machine learning will help to overcome the multidimensionality of data generated from electronic health records by exercising effective data management (Junaid et al., 2022)Application Of Digital Technological In Healthcare Discussion. Therefore, these promising technologies in healthcare will result in higher efficiencies and effectiveness of healthcare systems with preserved patient safety and quality of healthcare services.
