American Nurses Association (ANA) Competencies and Standards in Practice Part 1
Part 1: ANA Competencies and Standards Identification
ANA Functional Areas I am Interested
Upon keenly looking at the ANA functional area, the one that drew particular interest is “Quality Improvement and Safety.” This choice is justified by the fact that it helps improve patient outcomes and ensure a high standard of care (Fulton, 2024). Importantly, this closely aligns with my current role. This interest in this functional area stems from the potential to make a tangible impact on healthcare delivery through the implementation of evidence-based practices, medical errors reduction, and the promotion of a culture of safety. More importantly, quality improvement initiatives often involve close liaison with other healthcare professionals providing an opportunity to drive systemic changes. TIGER Competencies
On reflection, the TIGER competencies I might develop are information management and quality improvement. According to Kleib et al. (2021), information management competency is valuable as it involves the efficient use of health information systems to collect, analyze, and apply data to improve patient outcomes. This means that enhancing my skills in this area has the potential to effectively leverage data to identify areas needing improvement and implement evidence-based interventions. Djukic et al. (2023) added that the quality improvement competency is directly linked to my areas of interest as it focuses on utilizing informatics to enhance healthcare processes and outcomes. A notable advantage in developing this competency is that it will enable me to design, execute, and evaluate quality improvement projects essential for ensuring that safety protocols are adhered to and continuously refined.
QSEN Competencies
These competencies will be supported through the development of patient-centered care and safety. According to Djukic et al. (2023), patient-centered care competency recognizes the patient as the source of control and partnering with them is crucial to providing appropriate compassionate and coordinated care. Developing this competency is beneficial to me because it aligns with my goal of enhancing patient outcomes as it ensures quality improvement initiatives are tailored to meet individual patient needs. Achieving this is essential as it fosters better engagement and satisfaction. The second competency, safety, helps prevent harm to patients through system effectiveness and individual performance. Honing skills in this area will enable me to contribute to creating a safer healthcare environment through the identification of potential hazards and best practices, implementation. SDOH and how the QSEN, ANA Functional Areas, and TIGER In Improving Identified Domains
The first SDOH is health and healthcare. Developing QSEN competencies in patient-centered care and safety would enable healthcare professionals address disparities in access and quality of care better. Fulton (2024) noted that the quality improvement and safety are essential in driving initiatives which promote healthcare delivery. TIGER competencies in information management and quality improvement are crucial in enabling the use of health informatics to track and address healthcare gaps.
The second SDOH is neighborhood and built environment. According to Kleib et al. (2021), applying the QSEN Safety competency helps in the identification and mitigation of environmental health hazards in communities. Quality improvement initiatives are cited by Djukic et al. (2023) as crucial as in creating safer living environments through community health programs. Needless to say, leveraging TIGER competencies in information management allows for the collection and analysis of data on environmental risks, informing targeted interventions to improve community health.
