SMART Goals Template

My SMART Goals

Goal 1 (Rough draft): I want to be able to diagnose patients presented to the clinic with symptoms of various psychiatric disorders.

Revised Goal 1: I will practice focused diagnosis daily based on symptoms presented by individual patients. I want to diagnose various mental health conditions independently by the end of this semester. This skill is essential since appropriate diagnosis for psychiatric disorders results in patient satisfaction and positive health outcomes (Wang et al., 2020). I will achieve this goal by adhering to the DSM-VI diagnostic manual for various mental health disorders. The DSM-VI diagnostic manual is preferred since it provides psychiatrists and PMHNPs with guidelines for diagnosing various mental health illnesses (Ali, 2020). I will use 1 hour daily to review these manuals and identify unclear areas. I will then seek clarification from my preceptor to enhance my understanding of the DSM-VI diagnostic manual and my ability to incorporate it into psychiatry care to make the most appropriate diagnosis. I will assess my progress by diagnosing patients presented to the clinic with symptoms of various psychiatric disorders.

Goal 2 (Rough draft):  I want to improve my lab test skills during the remaining weeks.

Revised Goal 2: I will order the most appropriate lab test based on psychiatric symptoms presented by an individual patient. I want to order various lab tests correctly without my preceptor’s support by the end of the semester to enhance my diagnosis ability, which is a requirement for PMHNP certification (Zakhari, 2020). I will achieve this goal by enrolling in a PMHNP review course. I have selected the review course since it provides PMHNPs with high-quality questions for the AANC PMHNP-BC blueprint. Therefore, the course improves learners’ specialty knowledge and enables them to revise for their exam topic guided by practice tests. Therefore, enrolling in the review course will enable me to revise and review practice questions on lab tests, enhancing my knowledge and skills in this topic. I will attend the review course for 2 hours daily for three days a week. I will use one hour to review the topic content and the remaining hour to answer practice questions. These activities will significantly improve my lab test knowledge and competency, preparing me for the PMHNP certification exam. I will evaluate my progress in this area by ordering lab tests for individuals presenting to the clinic with symptoms of mental health illnesses, including mood and anxiety disorders. Goal 3 (Rough draft): I intend to educate all patients and their caregivers about various aspects of their psychiatric disorders, including causes, symptoms, and recommended therapeutic interventions.

Revised Goal 3: I will ask patients and their caregivers if they understand their psychiatric disorders and clarify any questions during the teaching session. I intend to prepare patients to repeat their disease process information by the end of the semester. Patient education and counseling in psychiatric care results in positive health outcomes (Keinki et al., 2021).

I will achieve this goal by reviewing clinical guidelines on patient education and counseling in psychiatric care. These guidelines will equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to improve individual patients and their family members’ knowledge and health literacy. I will set aside one hour daily for the next four weeks to review clinical guidelines on patient education. I will assess my patient education progress by conducting several weekly teaching sessions based on the patient’s healthcare needs. Clinical Practice and Epidemiology in Mental Health Discussion
