I have noticed both strengths and weaknesses thatI with communicating with different cultures. Interpreting the verbal or non-verbal cues of other cultures is a weakness for me, and it is something that I need to work on; however, I am not one to give up, so my strength is that I keep trying until I come up with a solution to converse with other cultures. There is always something to be learned, such as a new language, culture related terms, social practices, as well as verbal and nonverbal cues. In other areas of my life, I have always been able to educate myself with textbooks, articles, or by asking questions of others educated on the facts of what I am pursuing. In studying to communicate with other cultures, the challenges I face are the language barriers. To overcome this barrier, I started using Rosetta Stone to learn new languages one at a time; beginning with Spanish.On a personal and professional level, this course has given me a greater understanding of how to communicate on an intercultural basis. According to Lustig and Koester, intercultural competence is now more vital than ever due to the demographic, technological, global, peace, self-awareness, and interpersonal concerns in this multicultural world (Lustig & Koester, 2018). Learning and utilizing intercultural competence and implementing methods such as the BASIC and DIE tools will only enhance my community and the society at large because it will break the communication barrier and unlock the potential for a cross-cultural environment. FINAL REFLECTIONS 4weeks, I gained valuable knowledge that I used with my son’s in-laws when I met them last month at my son and daughter-in-love’s (DIL) wedding. Even though my DIL’s grandmother does not speak English I was able to pick up on her non-verbal clues how much including the lasso in the wedding ceremony meant to her; Grandma Vargas nonverbal usage of the glint in hereyes and the nod of her head communicated what her words never could convey. Utilizing Intercultural CommunicationTo be an effective communicator in today’s society, it is imperative we are interculturallyaware of different cultures and continuously find ways to improve our communication competently. Although I am comfortable conversing with any nation, to overcome the many challenges the mixed cultures face is taking time to recognize the cultural difference, respect thateach culture is not the same and learn how to reconcile the differences empathetically. In my personal life to overcome cultural challenges with my background and my DIL’s family, I am learning a new language; this will allow me to communicate without a middle man to interpret. ConclusionCulture is not just the color of your skin or where you live; culture relates to a group of individuals who share everyday experiences that shape the ways those people understand the world in which they live. This course has given me the essential tools on how to improve my intercultural competence in this multicultural world. Just as my culture is highly significant, one’s background is an active part of our lives because it influences views, values, loyalty, hope, and fear; therefore is it imperative that we have a clear understanding of our background as well as the other people to whom we communicate. We live in a diverse world made up of people with different religions, economic statuses, and languages; it is crucial that we build communities utilizing all of our cultural strengths to maintain an influential community.
