How do the four ways of knowing inter-relate and complement each other for application in nursing practice

There are four patterns of knowing. The empirics, esthetics, personal knowledge in nursing, and ethics. According to Dr. Carper, empirics involves the science of nursing, including theories, conceptual models, and systematic approaches to explaining phenomena. It also includes testing and applying evidence in the nursing practice.  The aesthetic pattern of knowing represents the art of nursing or knowledge gathered from experience. Unlike the factual evidence created through empirical methods, the art of nursing entails considering all the factors that influence a specific patient’s health and behavior rather than generalizing.  The personal knowledge component refers to knowing oneself and applying awareness in building interpersonal relationships with others (patients, families, and colleagues).  The moral element is about understanding the ethics of nursing practice. The four components are interrelated. Nursing relies on the empirical knowledge of human behavior in illness and health, perception of human experiences, understanding of oneself, and ability to make decisions in contexts that require moral judgments (Carper, 1978). The four ways of knowing are relevant to the development of the advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) role. APRNs require engaging all patterns of knowing in developing their future roles in treatment and diagnosis and healthcare leadership and management. The nurses should embody scientific knowledge and esthetics in defining and implementing quality and satisfying care. Besides, they should be empathetic to patients to create therapeutic relationships. Lastly, APRN nurses should practice within nursing ethics, including autonomy, justice, equity, beneficence, and non-maleficence (American Nurses Association, n. d.; Carper, 1978).

Identify and explain the pattern/s of knowing that you (1) most commonly use in your current nursing practice, (2) rarely use in your practice or engagement, and (3) would like to gain more knowledge on in your APN role.

The most commonly used pattern of knowing in my practice is scientific knowledge. Healthcare practitioners are guided by practice protocols based on empirical evidence to diagnose or treat different illnesses. We also practice within the nursing ethics, such as autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence, while engaging the patients and families to individualize care. However, we hardly depend on the aesthetics component of knowledge. I would like to know about the aesthetics of nursing to provide personalized and holistic care. The art of nursing is significant to APN’s role in disease diagnosis and treatment, care planning, and disease management, as it seeks to establish deeper meanings of a case and define solutions based on various sources (Carper, 1978; Rafii et al., 2021).
