AGREE project began operations in 2003 as an enterprise intended to contribute to the science and advancement of practice guidelines through international collaborations and research programs. The first instrument was published in 2003 through a collaborative effort between practice guideline researchers and developers. It was presented as a 23 item tool with 6 quality domains. To ensure that it could be used in different countries, it was translated into other languages. In 2004, the AGREE project established the AGREE Research Trust to facilitate the distribution, maintenance and improvement of the instrument while encouraging its continued development through collaborative research activities. In 2010, the AGREE project published AGREE II as the next step in improving the validity and reliability of the AGREE instrument.
