Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?
Discussion – Week 1
March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world.
When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP.
In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP.
To Prepare:
Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples.
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by visiting the websites they shared and offering additional examples of EBP or alternative views/interpretations to those shared in your colleagues’ posts.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Evidence Translation
The importance of evidence-based practice in the care of patients and the attendant positive outcomes has made EBP the bedrock of nursing practice. Practices have been enhanced, updated, and sometimes totally discarded based on current Evidence. The importance of systematic dissemination of evidence-based guidelines across organizations and researchers is vital to ensure EBP guidelines and frameworks reach the intended users and foster practice based on Evidence across the board Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?.
The CDC and the National Institute for Health (NIH) has adopted a framework that emphasizes the partnership between researchers and organization and the use of social marketing to ensure closer collaboration with organizations that are most likely to use evidence in practice (Harris et al., 2011). To improve the process of evidence translation, the CDC and NIH continue to emphasize the importance of structured and effective ways of passing evidence from researchers to organizations that utilize them for health promotion, prevention of chronic disease, and to improve public health (Wilson, Brady and Lesesne, 2011).
To ensure evidence from research is translated into practice, the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) formed a workgroup consisting of scientists and practitioners to collaborate and share experiences related to evidence translation personal observations (Wilson and Fridinger, 2008).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Evidence based practice is a foundation for the future of nursing. According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018) “Evidence-based practice (EBP) enhances healthcare quality, improves patient outcomes, reduces costs, and empowers clinicians; this is known as the quadruple aim in healthcare”. As professionals we need to make sure we are doing our best to incorporate up to date practices to ensure positive outcomes. I feel like in todays age the hospitals or companies tend to have more of their own research groups that keep our policy guidelines up to date and inform us of the changes when they come. As nurses we rely on other people on what is the correct protocol for our jobs. EBP moves nursing research to the bedside by evolving from using traditional practice models to models based on evidence and data (Laureate Education, 2018). Nurses should take the opportunities to be able to be able to gain the knowledge themselves and be a leading force in advancements in medicine. Not enough nurses actively participate in the research and only wait for new transitions. I feel like as staff we could do better if we had more time and focus from employer’s to be the best at our occupation.

Hello Patrick,
I enjoyed reading your post. The CDC’s mission statement states that “the CDC works 24/7 to protect America from health, safety, and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022) This mission statement seems strong and supportive and all-encompassing of the diverse population. The CDC website highlights their role in the importance of health security, putting science into action, helping medical care, fighting diseases before they reach the public, and nurturing public health. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022) This philosophy shows their integration of evidence-based practice within their work by using science, research, and education, to constantly improve their practices. The incorporation of evidence-based practice into their foundation leads to the highest quality of care and best outcomes for people. (Melnyk, & Fineout-Overholt, 2018, pg. 12)

Great Post Patrick.
Evidence based practice (EBP) is essential to health care and can be considered as collection of facts that are believed to be true. it’s considered a lifelong problem-solving approach to clinical practice which enhances health care quality, improves patient’s outcome, reduces cost, and empowers clinicians (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt. 2018). When translating EBP, nurses serve on the frontline and have the unique opportunity to improve patient care through EBP.
Though EBP in nursing and health care discipline is considered as the global standards in nursing practice that is essential in ensuring good outcomes, it is important to note that many collaborations have been formed to help implement this tool that is essential in patient outcomes, however it still meets great challenges like nursing workload , lack of organization support, lack of EBP knowledge, and skills and poor attitudes towards EBP (Kim, S., et al 2016). Ensuring nurses/practitioners are more equipped with knowledge, have a chance to participate in EBP research may be a few driving factors that can encourage more involvement and help aid in translating research of EBP into practice.

EBP: Reply #1
Hey Patrick:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers education and information for the entire population to view. The CDC, (government agency) must stay up to date on policies and procedures for the population relies on such information. According to the CDC, evidence-based practices are utilized in the Advisory Committee on Immunizations, CDC Guidelines, Prevention of HIV/AIDS, and Guide to Community Prevention Services. “Increasing emphasis has been placed on the importance of evidence-informed prevention strategies and evidence-based decision making. Definitions of what constitutes “evidence” have been debated but most agree that evidence is extremely important for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers charged with the task of making decisions around the funding and implementation of violence prevention strategies” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], n.d., para. 4).
As we reminded on a daily basis regarding COVID-19, the CDC was the website of choice for society to receive the most up to date information. As noted earlier, EBP is the framework for the CDC. As research and data changes, the CDC continues to update previous education to stay current. The COVID pandemic would be a great example of such changes.
“Evidence-based practice is now widely recognized as the key to improving healthcare quality and patient outcomes. Although the purposes of nursing research and evidence-based nursing practice seem quite different, an increasing number of research studies have been conducted with the goal of translating evidence effectively into practice. Clearly, evidence from research must be accompanied by effective implementation, and an enabling context to achieve significant outcomes” (Chien, 2019, para. 2). In the viewpoint of Chien, EBP appears to be a universal language. Either debated or not, EBP will continue to change healthcare in the positive direction.

Hello Patrick,
Evidence-based practice is an integral part of our clinical practice, especially in psychiatry. Many patients are being treated for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is an anxiety disorder that occurs post a severe traumatic event or experience Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?. The event may be related to combat, sexual assault, natural disaster (Watkins, Sprang, & Rothbaum, 2018), or the violence inflicted on nurses that may occur in psychiatric units. PTSD is a chronic, painful, and incapacitating disorder (Watkins, Sprang, & Rothbaum, 2018). People with PTSD have a range of distressing emotions and tend to avoid any trauma reminders but are re-experiencing it in dreams, nightmares, flashbacks. Unfortunately, some people turn to alcohol and drugs-pharmacological or illicit- as coping mechanisms, and others experience suicidal ideation or even attempt to commit suicide. There are, however, treatments that may alleviate the pain and suffering. These treatments consist of evidence-based psychotherapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and evidence-based pharmacotherapies, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (Lancaster et al., 2016).

Patrick, I enjoyed reading your post on the use of evidence-based practice (EVP) by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The use of evidence-based practice in healthcare has allowed nurses to bring new research to the bedside (Laureate Education, 2018). We are fortunate to work as nurses at a time in which our practice is most commonly based on up-to-date information. The CDC has taken a leading role in transforming research into evidence-based guidelines (Carande-Kulis et al., 2022). The CDC has published hundreds of guidelines over greater than a decade that are evidence-based (Carande-Kulis et al., 2022). These guidelines are developed by “internal workgroups” made up of experts (Carande-Kulis et al., 2022). These experts perform a systemic review of literature and transform the information into summaries of evidence (Carande-Kulis et al., 2022).
Under normal circumstances, the process taken by the CDC in developing guidelines is solid. Their six-step process includes; assessing the need for guidelines, determining the scope of the guidelines, identifying roles and competing interests, summarizing and assessing evidence, developing review questions, and drafting recommendations (Carande-Kulis et al., 2022). There is another category of guidelines that occurs in emergencies. During these times, the guidelines are developed based on expert opinion and indirect or emerging evidence. These guidelines are called “interim” (Carande-Kulis et al., 2022). In the past, I have always looked to the CDC for sound guidelines based on research and review. My perception has changed over the past 18 months during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the pandemic, the CDC has put out “interim” guidelines influenced by outside sources rather than experts, including teacher’s unions. For example, masking children during the early months of returning to school seemed reasonable, but data emerged early in the pandemic which questioned the efficacy of masks on children. Very few showed concern about the adverse effects that masks have on children. We have thus seen dramatic increases in anxiety, depression, suicide, overdose deaths, and the majority of children falling behind in school. Many parents come to me as a nurse and parent, questioning the science behind masking their children. I could not, and am still unable to provide them with rational answers to support continual mask mandates. I have yet to see strong evidence in support of mask requirements for children, only that it makes people feel safe. I have never seen healthcare become political like this, putting feelings of a few ahead of our children’s health. I hope that our nation can soon return to using evidence and science in the decisions of our leading healthcare organizations.

Hello Shana,
You brought great thoughts about CDC and its research data base. As the COVID pandemic challenged all health workers and organization to act upon the needed health care needs of the patients, nurses took about themselves to make innovations and decisions as a response to PPE shortage. Some of the clinical decision on PPE shortage gave nurses a different perspective of the way we handle care. Alternations in carrying out infection control practices had been modified that may have been carried not in accordance to EBP. (Yingling, 2021). What are your thoughts about best practice modification in infection control practices (PPE utilization)? Any recommendations and or comments?

RE: Discussion – Week 1
The purpose of this discussion post is to explain the process of Evidence Based Practice (EBP), where we explore the NCQA (National Committee on Quality Assurance) and analyze how EBP is utilized in this healthcare organization. The process will identify whether the NCQA requires EBP and explain how this new information may change my perception of the NCQA. According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018), “Evidence is a collection of facts that are believed to be true.” Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is conducted by utilizing randomized studies, clinical expertise and patient preferences and values (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018). The goal of EBP is, “…to bring together research, a clinician’s expertise and patient preferences and values to drive the best care and outcomes (Ohio State University, 2018).” EBP is evidenced in the Diabetes Recognition Program (DRP) within the National Committee of Quality Assurance (NCQA). The sole purpose of the NCQA is, “To improve the quality of healthcare (NCQA, 2021).”
The NCQA is known for its evidence based practices and reimburses medical providers who follow these evidence based practices with a premium. In order to receive the premium for the DRP, the provider must document certain measures to become certified as a notable NCQA-DRP provider. These quality measures include, “…HbA1c Control, blood pressure control, eye examinations, neuropathy assessment, foot examination and smoking cessation (NCQA, 2021).” For example, if a diabetic patient in a provider’s practice is not being evaluated for ALL of the quality measures, the provider will not receive special reimbursement for that particular diabetic patient. The practice must also have a minimum number of controlled diabetics in order to ensure EBP is being followed.. EBP supports NCQA enhanced billing by narrating the flow of a diabetic visit, which improves the quality of care for the patient and aids the medical community in best practices.
As a nurse this new information regarding the NCQA changes my perception in a positive way due to the enhanced level of care the diabetic patient receives. The process of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is well-defined through the NCQA-DRP example. We explored the NCQA and analyzed how EBP is utilized in this healthcare organization. The process identified that the NCQA utilizes EBP to enhance quality of care and changed my perception of the NCQA in a positive light.

Hello Michelle,
I appreciate your post on the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA). Bringing our awareness to this organization highlights yet another way in which evidence-based practice is used to promote quality in healthcare. Furthermore, the improvement in quality of care is directly correlated with better patient outcomes (Ellis, 2019). You specifically mentioned diabetes research and this topic definitely deserves focus. Hi Michelle
I enjoyed reading your discussion post regarding EBP.
EBP is defined as “A paradigm and lifelong problem-solving approach to clinical decision making that involves the conscientious use of the best available evidence, with one own clinical expertise and patient values and references to improve outcomes for individuals, groups, communities, and systems” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
When visiting the NCQA website, there were several areas in which EBP is evident, such as the Health Plan Accreditation. NCQA Health Plan Accreditation builds upon more than 25 years of experience to provide a current, rigorous, and comprehensive framework for essential quality improvement and measurement (2021, July 19). It is the only program in the industry that bases results on clinical performance and consumer experience, incorporating EBP.

Improving the quality of healthcare is something we should all be striving for at all times. Reading the information you gathered from NCQA was great, as I see that their goal is to improve the quality of healthcare. Their use of evidence based practice to ensure quality care is being provided, as well as the reimbursement given to medical providers who utilize best practice standards provided by EBP is a wonderful incentive for providers. “Supportive leaders obtain funding, provide resources, allow the time necessary for nurses to engage in EBP implementation, and reward those nurses who participate in evidence-based change projects in performance evaluations” (Kim et al., 2016). It is really wonderful that organizations are recognizing the importance of EBP and watching how they move forward with the information provided and put it into practice.

Hello Lisa,
Great post and thanks for sharing. Evidence-based practice will help to improve patient outcomes, the quality of services, decreased medical costs, and support healthcare providers. This quadruple aim is an evolving diagram in which the success of one issue with help to improve another. This new four sphered head model aims at guiding health services research with an interdisciplinary real-time view that will assist in making the best patient care decisions (Satterfield et al., 2009). Making the right decisions for patients improves the quality of services, shortens the stay in the hospital, and provides a guideline for healthcare providers to follow. Most healthcare systems today utilize evidence-based practices to mirror their care for patients. For the sake of advancing care, it is time for practitioners to move on from traditional practices and phrases such as “we have always done it that way” to update policies with sound evidence (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).

Hi Lisa,
I enjoyed your post on WebMD. I have always told my patients, family, and friends how important it is to advocate for their health care. Education is the first step in the ability to do that. I am gratified to hear that the information on this popular website is a somewhat reliable source for those not in the health care industry to visit for evidence-based information. Significant health improvements can be accomplished by educating patients regarding their health conditions. In a clinical research study of patients with atrial fibrillation, the group presented with evidence-based education on their condition had 36% fewer re-hospitalizations in the following six months than those given no in-home education (Hendriks et al., 2019). I would like to see this education model used for patients with mental illness and other behavioral health conditions Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?. Thank you for commenting on my post. I am glad you were able to appreciate why I chose a site like WebMD. Most people will automatically look up their illness before going to their primary care office or emergency room. While I always prompt my patients to be an advocate for themselves and understand their medications, illness, or condition, it is important that they access evidence-based sites. The National Institutes of Health advises patients preparing for a doctor’s visit to make a list of concerns, and cautions patients against diagnosing their own condition (2021).

Hello Lisa
Great post,
For this discussion, the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses (NAON) will be analyzed. I chose the organization because I have been a member for the last five years. I have also worked as an orthopedic Nurse for the last seven years. The NAON is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. Its main aim is to enhance the careers of orthopedic nurses by promoting higher standards of nursing practice (National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, 2022). The organization has been educating its members on the current health practices, encouraging them to get involved in research, and encouraging effective communication between the members and groups with similar interests. The NAON has provided leadership in identifying gaps and providing opportunities for further training and education in the orthopedic nursing field (NAON, 2022). NAON addresses significant issues in clinical setting that have a direct effect on orthopedic nursing as well as orthopedic patients.
NAON has promoted evidence-based practices by supporting research in orthopedics. It is through research that the best evidence-based practices that are discovered and implemented. The organization’s mission statement is to advance the specialty of orthopedic nursing by promoting excellence in education, research, and nursing practice (NAON, 2022). The organization emphasizes its focus on EBP and applying it to improve patient care. The vision statement of NAON is to deliver value by providing relevant and timely information and research on musculoskeletal conditions (NAON 2022). From the vision statement, it is evident that NAON promotes EBP to assist their patients through use of relevant and timely information Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?.
The information is gathered using EBP and evaluated to ensure it promotes best practices. The organization’s value statement promotes a culture of collaboration and innovation among members. This helps the members in developing interest in musculoskeletal research and care. NAON has helped in the formation and implementation of new practices using evidence-based research. The organization has been founded on EBP as it promotes use of modern treatment options and adoption of modern nursing practices in orthopedics. The information I have found on NAON website has enlightened me on orthopedic care. In addition, it has made me know that NAON is an organization that promoted EBP for best care of patients and improvement of patient care.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health care Organizations
A commitment to evidence based practice is a required component of various accreditation processes. The goal is to ensure that 90% of clinical decisions are individualized yet supported by the most current, relevant, and best available evidence and effective tools are in place to measure outcomes. Standards are constantly evolving with input from healthcare providers, latest scientific literature, government agencies and consumers all with the goal of improving healthcare quality.
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations is a non profit organization based in the United States that accredits over 20,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the country. It consists of a 21 member Board of Commissioners that include healthcare providers, educators and advocates. The goal is to continuously improve healthcare for the public by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.

Good post Angela thank you for sharing,
The Joint Commission website highlights the organization’s commitment to patient safety. Speaking to healthcare provider collaborations, the Joint Commission analyses patient safety issues using evidenced based methods for resolve (Search, 2022). Evidence based practice incorporates researched best practice methods into patientcare practices to promote positive patient outcomes (Crabtree et al., 2016). Joint Commission sets a standard for patient centered safe practice.

Hello Angela,
I agree with you on the role of The Joint Commission (TJC). The role of TJC in ensuring that hospitals maintain the highest standard and a safe environment of care is an invaluable contribution to the goal of consistently achieving safe care for patients in all hospitals in the United States. The consistent efforts of some of the hospitals I have worked to maintain TJC standards highlight the commission’s important role in ensuring evidence-based practice through its unbiased assessment of hospital practices’ level of compliance to quality and safe care (The Joint Commission, 2022). The role of independent accreditation programs such as TJC is to help hospitals and health departments to improve health practices, enhance transparency and responsibility and ensure an improved utilization of evidence-based practice for the safe and enhanced care of the patient (CDC, 2021)
However, it still baffles me why the commission informs the hospital of their intending visits, which allows the hospitals to fix their lapses and present an environment that always implies compliance. Sometimes I wonder if a random vibist by the commission would not achieve a better outcome by ensuring hospitals always maintain the approved standard, not sure when the commission would visit

Hi Angela. By reviewing the website for The Joint Commission I understand its goal is to have patients experience the safest, best quality, and highest value health care across all settings (The Joint Commission, n.d.). They want to set a standard for all healthcare facilities so patient outcomes aren’t affected. Quality and consistency are essential in healthcare facilities. Research has shown that EBP “leads to higher quality care, improved patient outcomes, reduced costs, and greater nurse satisfaction than traditional approaches to care” (Melnyk et. al., 2010). These outcomes align with The Joint Commission’s goals.

Great post Angela!
I concur with your statement as the Joint Commission provides patient safety by ensuring standards that are based on objective evaluation process that help health care organizations measure, assess, and improve performance by focusing on patient, individual, or resident through ensuring organization functions that are essential in providing safe, high quality of care (The Joint Commission n.d.).These are paramount to ensuring safe patient outcomes of care. Evidence-based practice (EBP) can be considered as categorical, conscientious approach towards patient holistic health through use of current and most appropriate clinical literature available that is tailored to fit the patients specific health conditions and requirements ( Samonte & Vallente 2020). Not only do joint Commission emphasize on EBP, its also important to note that the institute of medicine recommends that 90% of clinical decisions should be evidence based with both institute of medicine and American association of critical care nurses having identified EBP as a core competency for practice (Orta, et al 2016).

Hi Angela,
As your discussion post stated, the Joint Commission is the leader for health care accreditation. EBP is identified in the patient safety component of The Joint Commission website, as stated: “together with providers, we constantly study emerging patient safety issues and roll out evidence-based methods to solve them” (2021). Joint Commission accreditation does not begin and end with the onsite survey, its a continuous process. The Joint Commission’s emphasis on clinical practice guidelines helps hospitals establish a consistent approach to care and reduce errors. (2017)

Hey Angela!
JCAHO is the same organization that I chose as well! I enjoyed reading your post and how you stated all of the components that are a part of their organization and how their goal is to continuously improve healthcare. “Best practice only occurs when staff continually ask questions about treatment and care, have the resources and skills necessary to search for and appraise research evidence, implement the evidence in practice, and evaluate its effectiveness” (Crabtree, Brennan, Davis & Coyle, 2016). I think JCAHO’s presence in the healthcare community is very strong and one that is helping us institute best practices and quality care for our patients.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Evidence based practice was introduced and became a widely implemented part of nursing. EBP help us as professionals to not just guess on how to properly care for the community, but to use backed data and research to help show us what really works. EBP is the integration of the best research, clinical expertise, patient preference, and values, with a problem-solving approach (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, (2017). This helps us to increase positive outcomes with our patients and to promote overall wellness. According to Kim et al (2016) ” The staff nurse is critical link in bringing evidence-based changes into clinical practice.” Without nursing staff keeping accurate data and charting we would not be able to have the positive outcomes. We rely on nurses to collect information, make clinical judgments, and to also implement the new information supported by the EBP. This takes flexible staff, communication, and a good knowledge base of overall holistic care.
As a school nurse I have been using the website for the local Sandusky County Health Department more recently due to Covid. This website does participate in using the newest up to date information available and making changes. While Covid made our world ever changing, EBP being completed in the background has helped us as professionals with following the best information possible. Sandusky County Health Department website stayed up to date with information and followed the guidelines set forth after every change was adapted. The website kept this information current so we could make accommodations. The changes came in so quickly that it was difficult to keep up with this flow of information. Reading journal articles and checking government website for rules and regulations has now become more integrated in my current practice.
According to Crabtree et al (2016) “Althought EBP is considered to be the gold standard in nursing practice, the actual implementation of EBP has been inconsistent due to barriers related to nursing workload, lack of organizational support, lack of EBP knowledge and skills, and poor attitudes towards EBP”. Due to staff being so bombarded with new information and influx in patients it can be difficult to make research a priority. This is all the more reason to be an person who researches and does the best possible practice. Not everyone maybe informed or completing task properly, we should all have a team that helps to promote EBP and be able to implement this in a timely fashion at our own facilities.

First how impressive that you are a school nurse! I did school nurse as a per diem up until starting my MSN and I enjoyed all the schools and met great teachers! Indeed, it was extremely hard when Covid-19 hit.
I visited the Sandusky County Health Department site and because of Covid-19 I bet you were on that county health site every day. The pandemic had all health care professionals examining every aspect of health care and how to continue to provide services with such a lethal virus in our world. I see that their website is current and offers ten essential health services: assessing population health, investigating health problems and hazards, communicate with the public, make partnerships to improve health, mandate legal and regulatory actions, provide equitable access, support a diverse and skilled workforce, research, and quality improvement, and maintain a strong infrastructure for public health (SC Public Health, n.d.). The Sandusky County Health Department is accredited by a public health accreditation board (SC Public Health, n.d.) and this provides assurance that this organization has met certain standards in public health. I also see that Sandusky County Health Department offers a wealth of community health services such as a naloxone program and emergency preparedness. The health department also offers environmental health services like rabies vaccinations and food inspections. Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019) states that the most important reason for implementing EBP is that it provides the highest quality of care and best outcomes and after reviewing the Sandusky County Health Department site, I know it is grounded in EBP.

NURS 5052
Week 1 Discussion
Initial Post
The use of current research data in combination with decision-making about patient care is considered Evidence-Based Practice, or EBP (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2017 p.8). EBP is the integration of the best research, clinical expertise, patient preference, and values, with a problem-solving approach (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2017 p.8). EBP moves nursing research to the bedside (Laureate Education, 2018). Nursing care is evolving from using traditional practice models to models based on evidence and data. This improves best practices in nursing (Laureate Education, 2018).
Providence is a healthcare organization that serves the four west coast states, including Alaska and Montana (Providence Healthcare, n.d.). They have many affiliates, one of which is my most recent place of employment, Swedish Health Services (Providence Healthcare, n.d.). The merger of Swedish and Providence in 2018 was troubling from the standpoint of the nursing staff at Swedish. Swedish was required to change elements of the current charting system and staffing matrix. Within months, nursing satisfaction diminished due to the excessive increase in charting requirements, paired with a decrease in staffing. Since the merger, there has been a mass exodus from the unit that I worked on, retaining less than 50 percent of the staff by the end of 2021. My dissatisfaction with Providence is what led me to look into the organization to see if my perspective of the organization might change.
The mission of Providence states that, “As expression of God’s healing love, witnessed through the ministry of Jesus, we are steadfast in serving all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable” (Providence Healthcare, n.d.). Their core values include compassion, dignity, justice, excellence, and integrity (Providence Healthcare, n.d.). I was unable to find mention of evidence-based practice as I poured over Providence’s website, so I searched further. In the Providence strategic plan for 2019 to 2026, there is a section that discusses how an individual can learn, grow, imagine, and bring forward new ideas (Providence Healthcare Strategic Plan, n.d.). It discusses how transformation can occur in individuals and their practice when there is an opportunity to put forth new ideas and potential changes (Providence Healthcare Strategic Plan, n.d.). Providence would like to become the “go-to place to prototype new ideas, incubate novel concepts, and test creative theory” (Providence Healthcare Strategic Plan, n.d.). Though this is not full use of EBP, it does utilize some components when allowing staff to put forth new ideas along with testing theory.
As an organization, Providence’s focus on reaching the most vulnerable and underprivileged is admirable. Providence has a long history of providing charitable care going back to the late 1800s as a Catholic and faith-based organization (Providence Healthcare, n.d.). I do not see direct evidence of the use of EBP and I could not reasonably state that the organization’s work is grounded in it. Based on my research, the information I discovered on Providence’s website has not changed my perception of the organization. I was hoping to see more information about the quality of care in relation to nursing, staff, and patient satisfaction. I do also realize that I came into this assignment with a biased outlook which does affect my perceptions.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
I am sorry to hear that the company you are working for is not looking out for the best interest of it’s patients or staff. I feel that most companies have this goal in mind but is sometimes overshadowed by business ideals instead of medical concepts of what is best. According to Kim et al (2016) ” Although EBP is considered to be the gold standard in nursing practice, the actual implementation of EBP has been inconsistent due to barriers related to nursing workload, lack of organizational support, lack of EBP knowledge and skills, and poor attitudes towards EBP. Sufficient training and taking time getting people used to the new programs is more beneficial in keeping staff happy and in their position. If you think about it, the company did not realize it would lose 50 percent of staff with a merger just because they had work load increase due to system changes; it more than likely ended up costing them more money in hiring new staff and training in the long run. The company would have been more prosperous and benefiting everyone involved if they just completed the task properly and giving people time to learn the changes. According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018) “The value of our work is measure by the impact is has on advancing best practice in health care and how it helps point-of-care providers and educator make a difference in patients and students’ lives and health experiences”. According to Kim et al (2016) ” An organizational culture that emphasizes making clinical decisions based on evidence is critical for improving and sustaining safe and high quality patient care”. Some of the nurses could have organized a meeting to have with the bosses and stated they the need to slow down the merging process was in the best interest of the company, bring forth new ideas is difficult but something we must do to preserve our growth in future.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Hi Heidi,
I enjoyed reading your informative post, which piqued my curiosity, and I wanted to learn more about how Providence organizations integrate EBP. Some Providence Health services have been designated as Magnet Hospitals, including Providence Alaska Medical Center. The Providence Alaska Medical Center website stated that nurses at Providence Hospital Alaska Medical Center strive to strengthen our culture of excellence and follow the Sisters of Providence’s purpose. Nurses participate in shared governance to analyze and apply evidence to improve our processes and to improve patient outcomes. I am a little surprised that Providence is not grounded in EBP, especially the Providence St. Patrick Practice Model, which noted that by implementing evidence-based practice and research breakthroughs into their profession; they could provide high-quality, efficient therapy that improves patient outcomes (Providence, 2022).
However, I agree with your assessment of the organization’s basic values and mission statement, which resonate well with many people. And they are very much committed to helping the most vulnerable and disadvantaged communities due to their long history of generosity, as you stated. The EBP’s nature must be expressed, including efficiency, task relevancy, and high status, which are all factors that influence the implementation of EBP. For example, the EBP issues are seen as relatively basic by consumers. They are more easily embraced than any other items perceived to be more difficult. Implementation of elementary EBP subjects is aided by using a quick reference guide. Therefore, nurses must evaluate/apply evidence to their work and how EBP will help to facilitate their work for the benefit of their patients.
Thank you for sharing!

Hi Heidi,
Thank you Heidi for your post! I was inspired to look up the mission statement for the organization I work for.
Prime healthcare’s mission statement: To deliver compassionate, quality care to patients and better healthcare to communities. The website states they promise to provide compassionate care and clinical excellence to all patients as they create hospitals that improve healthcare in every community they serve. Values are mentioned, which include quality, compassion, community and physician led.
There is nothing related to EBP which concerns me. I hate to say that I am not surprised. I hope one day the organization decides to incorporate EBP into their decisions and operations. EBP is the integration of clinical expertise and evidence.

The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) is an organization headquartered in Rockville, MD that seeks to ensure “health equity for children and adults with disabilities through policy, research, education, and dissemination”(The American Association on Health and Disability, 2022). This organization drew my attention first because it used the word research in its “About Us” description and that is a close link to the creation of evidence-based practice (EBP). Our lesson this week points to EBP as a vehicle for optimization of healthcare performance which is in line with the goals of the selected organization AAHD (Walden University, LLC, 2018). The AAHD’s commitment to research and dissemination weighs strongly in EBP. In this same vein, EBP helps to create solutions to clinical problems thus creating environments for the best care possible at the bedside (Walden University, LLC., 2018).
In the nursing field, many patients will have pre-existing conditions that classify as disabilities. More importantly, mobility and the lack of it, is one of the leading causes of health care complications for admitted patients. The research and EBP presented on the AAHD’s website proves beneficial to the nursing practice. For example, the AAHD has an article about increased blot clot formation in persons with mobility issues. The article goes on to present evidence-based considerations for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. I am glad that I found this organization’s website because it adds yet another resource to my arsenal and in my journey to providing the best care possible for my patients.

Hey Erica:
I really enjoyed your post. I was unaware The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) even existed. The AAHD is a great resource for patients and their families who suffer from disabilities. “AAHD is dedicated to ensuring health equity for children and adults with disabilities through policy, research, education, and dissemination at the federal, state and community level. AAHD strives to advance health promotion and wellness initiatives for people with disabilities. AAHD’s goal are to reduce health disparities between people with disabilities and the general population, and to support full community inclusion and accessibility. AAHD is governed by an esteemed group of board members representing people with disabilities, disability researchers, disability advocates, health care and public health professionals” (American Association on Health and Disability [AAHD], 2022).
I also found it very interesting to understand the story behind AAHD. The Institute of Medicine received a grant from the CDC that increased public awareness for the need to help those with disabilities. The AAHD website also provides updates on current issues and research on common forms of disabilities. To date, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) was the topic of tweets to promote increased research. From working in trauma ICU, TBI’s were unfortunate very common.
Even though I have never assessed this website prior to your post, my opinion on the AAHD is just as high as I am sure the rest of society believes. It doesn’t dwell on the negative aspects of disabilities but the positive outcomes and resources available. The journals that are offered with membership are peer reviewed with evidenced based subsets. Evidenced based practices continue to change the nursing profession as the times change. “When evidence is used to define best practices rather than to support existing practices, nursing care keeps pace with the latest technological advances and takes advantage of new knowledge developments” (Youngblut & Brooten, 2001, p. 468).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Evidence Based Practice (EBP) improves health care quality, reliability, and patient outcome as well as reduce variations in care cost. Adoption of EBP competencies for nurses can help the institutions they work for achieve high value, low-cost evidence-based care. To implement EBP consistently, there is need to cultivate the spirit of inquiry, ask clinical questions, search for the best evidence, appraise the evidence, implement evidence, evaluate outcome then share results (Melnyk, 2010). As health disparities increase and trends in health care are changing globally, the need to adapt to the ever-changing needs of healthcare recipients is crucial. Patient are looking for care that is based on scientific evidence and not tradition. EBP is on ongoing problem-solving approach that considers external scientific evidence, clinician expertise, and the patient’s perspective (Melnyk, et al. 2014).
I have chosen the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as an agency that has adopted ABP in their approach to care. SAMHSA is and agency based within the Department of Health and Human Services here in the United States and it aims at leading in the public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation through its mission to reduce substance abuse and mental health impacts on communities (SAMSHA, n.d.). SAMSHA offers EBP resource center that aims at being dynamic and responsive to changing science and evidence. It provides leadership and resources to communities, clinicians, and policy makers with an aim of improving health of individuals, communities and public. SASHA work is based on EBP as its comprehensive approach to its identity and disseminate clinically sound and scientifically based programs, policies, and practices (SAMSHA, n.d). The agency is also rich with great articles and manuals that offer the best practices on collaborative treatments, guides, fact sheets, data reports on treatment, and prevention of mental illness and substance abuse, and recovery.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Hello Jolly,
I thoroughly enjoyed your post regarding SAMSHA. Honestly, I did not even realize they existed. I am a strong believer that we need more facilities, and
more research when it comes to mental health. In recent years, mental health has reached a crisis level. Of course, Covid-19 has undoubtedly affected
this. Mental health is it’s own section in healthcare that requires it’s own clinicians and research teams to make sure everyone stays up to date on all
current practices and new ones being studied. Without SAMSHA, mental health wouldn’t have the resources it currently has. It would make sense that
SAMSHA would have its own evidence-based research team within their organization.

HI Jolly,
Great post! I really appreciate the SAMSHA website. I have used the information found there for patient education and advocacy. The psychiatric unit where I work has stumbled as far as quality of care in the last several years due to a change in leadership resulting in the loss of many of our providers and seasoned staff. In this work environment, I have found it imperative to become my own knowledge worker, and SAMSHA has been one of my go to sources. I have been able to advocate for my patient’s safety and quality of care by disseminating the information and research publications found on the SAMSHA website (Disch, 2014) . Use of evidence-based practices significantly increases positive outcomes, and I believe it is my responsibility to ensure this happens for the patients we care for to the best of my ability (Walker et al., 2015). This website has been a valuable tool in reaching that goal.

RE: Discussion – Week 1- Response 2
Hello Jolly,
Thank you for the terrific post; after reviewing the substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) website, there are several areas that evidence-based practice (EBP) can be found. Including the vision and mission statements “To provide leadership and resources – programs, policies, information and data, funding, and personnel – advance mental and substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery services to improve individual, community, and public health. To reduce the impact of substance misuse and mental illness on America’s communities.” (SAMSHA, n.d.). These statements address the quadruple aim “improving the experience of care, improving the health of populations, reducing per capita costs of health care, and improve the work-life of health care providers” (Boller, J. 2017). The SAMSHA also has a tab for evidence-based practice articles and education for providers and visitors. This organization has a wealth of information that I find useful working in mental health, and I will use it in the future for patient education.

Jolly Murithi – Discussion Week 1 – 2nd Response
Jolly,
I think it is that spirit of inquiry that makes nursing such an interesting profession. It is important that all health professionals ask those burning clinical PICOT (patient population, intervention or issue, comparison intervention, outcome and time frame) questions to evaluate their current practices (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold, 2019). I agree with you Jolly that EBP competencies do help to provide quality, low-cost care. I do also agree with Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold (2019) that there must be administrative support and a leadership culture that values what nurses are evaluating and trying to change.
I frequently use the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) site for educational purposes. The mission of SAMHSA is to reduce the impact of mental health in America (SAMHSA, n.d.). Through its many programs, SAMHSA (n.d.) is tasked with coordinating responses to substance use disorders of tribal/Native peoples, older adults, children, and the workforce. SAMHSA ensures that all populations have equal access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services (SAMHSA, n.d.). I like that SAMHSA must ensure all populations receive help.

Jolly-
I appreciated your choice of evaluating the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) for their use of EBP. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) (2022), SAMHSA is a program within the HHS which “reduces barriers to high quality, effective programs and services” for people with substance abuse disorders including their families and communities. According to the HHS (2022), their operating divisions conduct research to protect and serve Americans. The HHS is a trusted source for information as it is a government source. I would recommend anyone struggling with substance abuse to turn to this site for resources. I believe that the SAMHSA site can help population health reach the “quadruple aim” of improving health and enhancing the patient experience by giving patients the resources they need (Walden University, 2018). Lowering healthcare costs and improving the work-life of healthcare providers are other goals within the quadruple aim, which can be satisfied when patients with substance abuse (SA) disorders are well taken care of, preventing adverse effects that substance abuse can cause, and decreasing hospitalizations (Walden University, 2018). To conclude, SAMHSA is a great evidence-based resource that can be given to patients with SA disorders.

Hi Jolly,
Your discussion on the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) has introduced me to the organization. Going through their home page revealed the extensive work they have done and are still doing to help those with substance abuse and mental health problems. SAMSHA has a program called the Evidence-based Practices (EBP) Resource Center with the aim to provide communities, clinicians, policymakers, and others in the field with information and tools needed to incorporate evidence-based practices into their communities or clinical settings. The site also revealed that they have been publishing peer-reviewed journals to reveal different new scientific findings on suicide prevention, mental health and also provides direct clinical support to mental institutions. Melnyk et al, (2014) research has shown the impact EBP has made on healthcare delivery, outcomes, and financial effectiveness when incorporated into clinical settings and care models (p.5). SAMSHA has been delivering evidence-based research to the end-users for the benefit of the patients, communities, and the public.

Response Jolly Murithi
Jolly, I enjoyed reading your discussion post about SAMSHA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. You made many good points about their use of evidence-based practice. Agencies like SAMSHA are vital in combating the growing substance and opioid abuse crisis in America. SAMSHA is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), leading the effort of improving the mental health of Americans with mental conditions as well as their families (SAMHSA, n.d.b.) The organization is critical as the substance and opioid abuse crisis has worsened during the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, in 2019, the CDC reported an average of 136 individuals dying from an opioid overdose every day in America (Center for Disease Control, n.d.). We can expect that the reports from 2020 and 2021 will be much worse. Two years of isolation for those struggling with substance abuse can be quite detrimental. Colleagues have informed me that isolation is one of the leading causes of relapse in those struggling with addiction.
EBP in mental health has been shown to improve quality of life. Through evidence-based resources, clinicians have seen improved results through involving peer and family help in treatment (Lesser, B., 2021). This is in combination with resources that focus on improving quality of life and individual accountability for patients (Lesser, B., 2021). The Evidence-based recovery approach is inclusive of all aspects of the patient’s life, not just the addiction alone (Lesser, B., 2021). SAMHSA, as you mentioned, has launched a resource center solely focused on EBP in mental health. They have seen improved outcomes by utilizing the most current evidence in their recommendations (SAMHSA, n.d.a). For example, SAMSHA provides information about the use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) along with therapies that provide a “whole-patient” approach (SAMHSA, n.d.a.). EBP has shown that this approach has been more successful in sustaining recovery in patients (SAMHSA, n.d.a.). SAMSHA is doing a great service to those suffering from substance abuse as well as mental disorders.

Evidence-based practice has become the back bone to nursing practice for at least the past 10 years. Knowing what organizations are out there, if they
are reliable, and how they can assist with evidence-based practice, is a standard I have set with myself since working in the health care field. Spending
most of my nursing career as a critical care nurse, I have come to know the American Association of Critical-Care Nursing (AACN). Their resources are
endless and their dedication into evidence-based practice is endless.
AACN’s website has a large amount of resources. Among those resources is a section on evidence-based practice. On their website, there is a section
called Clinical Advocacy. This section contains all of their evidence-based practice articles and research in regards to critical care nursing practice. Another
section is clinical resources. This takes you to multiple topics and health systems you can choose from and it provides evidence-based practice along with
other resources and articles.
AACN’s work is grounded in Evidence-Based Practice. AACN’s mission states “Patients and their families rely on nurses at the most vulnerable times of their
lives. Acute and critical care nurses rely on AACN for expert knowledge and the influence to fulfill their promise to patients and their families. AACN drives
excellence because nothing less is acceptable” (AACN). Providing nurses with the most up-to-date knowledge and practice standards is what the AACN is all
about. They are the largest specialty organization in the country and by educating nurses, nurses can then provide the best care to their patients.
As an acute and critical care registered nurse, this organization has been known to me for a while. The AACN also provides the testing to become a
certified critical care registered nurse. I have wanted to become certified for many years. However, due to the expense of becoming certified, I have had to
put this off over the years. I do plan on obtaining my CCRN this year, as this would benefit my patients, my career, and my future as a critical care nurse
practitioner.

Hello Melissa,
Thank you for choosing the American Association of Critical Care Nursing (AACN) to spotlight for our evidence-based discussion this week. Although many of our classmates may not be pursuing career development in the critical care environment, it is still very important for all nurses and advanced practice nurses to have a basic knowledge of critical care concepts. Personally, I work in an outpatient setting, but at any time my clients can become critical, requiring me to understand these unique changes. Nursing, in genera, must include all aspects of research to improve patient outcomes and continue to develop better methods for quality of care (Chien, L, 2019). This includes all specialties and all levels of nursing.

The Joint Commission
EBP is defined as “A paradigm and lifelong problem-solving approach to clinical decision making that involves the conscientious use of the best available evidence, with one own clinical expertise and patient values and references to improve outcomes for individuals, groups, communities, and systems” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
The Joint Commission is the leader for health care accreditation. They are an independent, not-for-profit organization, that offers an unbiased assessment of the quality achievement of an institution’s patient care and safety. Serving under the mission statement “to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value” (2021). EBP is identified in the patient safety component of The Joint Commission website, as stated: “together with providers, we constantly study emerging patient safety issues and roll out evidence-based methods to solve them” (2021).
The Joint Commission has standards that are directly related to EBP. These standards are developed with input from health care professionals, including providers who represent eht clinical aspect but are also developed from scientific literature and expert consensus which is reviewed by a Board of Commissioners. New standards are only added if they are related to patient safety or quality of care.
Working in different health care facilities throughout my 27-year nursing career, I have encountered many different accreditation organizations. Many times, I thought these organizations were there to pick out all the flaws and hold accreditations when in fact, the organizations were there to assist healthcare facilities to uphold the highest standards of care. Reading through the Joint Commission webpages, it was interesting to learn how the standards are developed and all the energies that go into a specific standard prior to approval. Only if it will improve patient care will it be approved, not just to “hassle staff.
At the end of the day, when a loved one requires health care, whether it be in an acute setting or long-term care, the accreditation factor is a big selling point for the institution chosen. Accredited facilities are held to more rigorous standards of care and safety for their patients, which ultimately means a higher quality of life (Wieand, 2020).

Hi Brenda,
I enjoyed reading your post and agreed with your statement on implementing EBP.
The enactment of Affordable Care Act brought in a requirement for empirical evidence. As a result, research on evidence-based practices (EBP) increased significantly and its application spread across the various economic sectors. Health care organizations have adopted, implemented, and promoted EBP. According to Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2018), implementation and adoption of EBP requires asking of clinical questions, best evidence search, appraisal of evidence, implementation of best practices from the evidence, evaluation of outcomes, and sharing results. According to Melnyk et al (2017), EBP have proven to enhance the quality of nursing care, improve patient safety, patient outcomes, and reduction of medical cost. These benefits of EBP are referred to as quadruple aim in health care and the health care organizations are striving to reach it to improve patient outcomes and safety.

I enjoyed reading your post about the Joint Commission. Most nurses, if not all, are
familiar with the Joint Commission. Personally, I remember them from their rounding at my previous place of employment. According to the Joint Commission’s mission and values, their goal is improved health care by assisting organizations through evaluation and inspiration (n.d.). The Joint Commission seems to use EBP frequently in their qualifications for their standards as it references scientific literature and expert advice, both parts of EBP. I find that many people get anxiety before the Joint Commission comes to their facility. I believe more people would appreciate their presence if they knew their reasoning. EBP is shown to have an increase in nurse job satisfaction and gives them a different view into their patients care (Crabtree, et al., 2016).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Evidence-based practice (EBP), coined during the Affordable Care Act era leads the way in providing care to patients (Walden University, LLC., 2018). During my BSN, evidence-based practice was the gold standard for providing care. Evidence-based practice involves research and studies revolved around specific patient care to reach the best conclusion. EBP allows those in healthcare to provide the best care to their ability. EBP involves the thought that care is everchanging, and requires staff, including nurses, to continue to ask questions about whether there are better options (Crabtree, et al., 2016).
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is a main resource for healthcare and how care is provided. For example, COVID quarantine guideline were recently put forward by the CDC, and this is what the rest of healthcare bases their information from. The CDC’s mission is to “protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable, or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same” ((Mission, Role and Pledge, 2022). According to the CDC, the development of their guidelines in evidence based, requiring research, external input, and many other standards (2022). This allows their guidelines to lack bias and have high quality in their recommendations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). EBP can be seen throughout their website and is the core of their recommendations. I believe this allows the CDC to be a great resource in healthcare and many other areas.

I enjoyed reading your post.
Evidence based medicine is the continuous, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. The practice of evidence based medicine means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research. Best research evidence, clinical expertise and patient values and preferences make up evidence based practice.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Hello Mercedes,
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has been a resource for health care since it’s development. I have always used the CDC’s website for credible
information in regards to diseases, proper isolation guidelines, etc. However, i really feel they dropped the ball when it came to Covid-19. Like many
other government agencies, the CDC is too easily influenced by the government. For example, when Covid-19 first came to light in the United States, the
CDC had created guidelines about the proper isolation and the proper masks to be used. The CDC initially stated that N95’s should be worn by
healthcare personnel when treating all Covid patients inside a hospital. Then the CDC turned around and said N95’s only need to be worn when the
patient is intubated, using BiPAP or CPAP, etc. The CDC changed their guideline recommendation when it N95’s were in short supply. Then when
supplies were no longer at a crisis level, the CDC changed their guidelines back to state that a N95 mask should be worn when treating Covid 19
patients. The CDC should have never changed their guidelines. In my opinion, if they hadn’t changed their guidelines, many health care personnel
would still be alive had they never would have contracted Covid 19.
As I previously mentioned, the CDC is a great resource, despite their Covid 19 downfall. The CDC’s knowledge base comes from research they
completed and creates evidence-based practice for health care personnel to incorporate into their daily practices.

Hi Mercedes,
Response #2
I enjoyed reading your post and admire how comprehensive and insightful it is. To add to the discussion on your topic, the knowledge I learned from your post has somewhat changed my perspective on hospitals and EBP. For example, I have discovered that hospitals play an important role in improving EBP practices by assisting personnel interested in EBP. Nonetheless, I understand that EBP is an integral aspect of today’s health sector, which is still patient-centered. Healthcare establishments can expect to have to educate and refresh health professionals on the most up-to-date methods as healthcare information changes.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) takes a crucial step in supporting and involving healthcare practitioners in EBP because they are responsible for limiting the introduction and spread of infectious diseases. The frontline workers in clinical care have a unique opportunity to improve treatment through EBP. The infection COVID-19 is still new and the inability to rule out some possibilities due to a lack of information is very challenging. As a result, practitioners may be forced to pick sometimes less effective solutions with little to no data if EBP recommendations are not available.
Thank you!

RE: Discussion – Week 1-Main Post
Main Post
Introduction
Healthcare organizations are continually striving to better themselves in order to stay relevant in this competitive market. In order to do so, healthcare organizations utilize evidence-based practices to incorporate the latest research and science into their organizations, providing care that results in the best outcomes for patients. The use of evidence-based practice enhances quality of care provided to patients, reduces costs, and empowers clinicians to strive for excellence which is known as the quadruple aim in healthcare. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018) Through research and education, healthcare organizations can transform themselves on a clinical and system wide level, as they strive for excellence in providing innovative care that will give the best outcomes to patients. (Crabtree, et. al., 2016)
Evidence Based Practice in Healthcare Organizations
A healthcare organization I chose to examine is ProMedica, which is a healthcare organization serving communities in over 30 states. There was some evidence of the utilization of evidence-based practice on their website. ProMedica’s mission is to improve your health and well-being. The organization reports that they are developing new ways to build better health through access, integration, and innovation. (ProMedica, 2022) ProMedica provides services to over 30 states with a variety of care centers from urgent care facilities, to hospitals, and telehealth, and provides comprehensive care for every stage of life. ProMedica promotes that they are continually striving for excellence through innovative research and collaboration. (ProMedica, 2022)
ProMedica Healthcare Organizations does appear to be grounded in evidence-based practice as they acknowledge on their main website the importance of utilizing research, innovation, access, and quality care to strive for excellence. The organization acknowledges the importance of utilizing research to continually strive for improvement.
The ProMedica Healthcare Organization’s website description of their mission and strive for excellence through innovation, research, access, and quality care is intriguing and does promote the organization as a competent healthcare organization that is able to provide high quality care to a variety of patients with various health issues. Reviewing the website has provided me with a more positive perspective of the organization. I was impressed with the various categories of how they are integrated in not only medical care, but also supporting the surrounding community by creating strong partnerships that incorporates social determinants to provide holistic approach to health and well-being. ProMedica also has a link to submit your ideas for making innovative suggestions for commercially viable products in the life sciences, medical or health information technology.
Conclusion
Healthcare organizations must encompass evidence based-practice into their foundation in order to provide the most innovative and comprehensive care to their communities. Through research, education, access, and innovation, healthcare organizations can remain competitive in the healthcare market.

Hello Heidi, very informative post regarding ProMedica. This was an organization I was unfamiliar with and did not realize the large area they serve. From the information provided regarding the depth of evidence based practices within this organization it is apparent the leadership and foundation present to implement and sustain evidence based practices (Sharplin et al., 2019, p.2). According to Li, Cao, & Zhu (2019) an organization that invest in resources, adequate nursing workforce and training along with “EBP approaches” is what leads to effective implementation (p.8).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Initiation of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) originated with a 2003 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report calling for changes in patient care delivery to promote positive patient outcomes (Boller, 2017). Evidence Based Practice encompasses forming a clinical question, conducting literature searches to support presented theory, analyze and evaluate findings, transition findings into patient care practices (Crabtree et al., 2016). Incorporation of EBP significantly in proved healthcare practice policies. Improved health care practice policies decreased the number of patients falls and hospital acquired infections promoting positive patient outcomes (Boller, 2017).
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is an organization established 1896 dedicated to promoting and supporting nursing excellence. ANA supports nurses in 50 states at every level, from the bedside to legislation (About ANA | ANA Enterprise, 2022). Nursing advancement and use of EBP is promoted by ANA to provide safe practice environments for nurses and patients. EBP is represented throughout the ANA website. While not specifically mentioned on the home page or in the mission statement, education and research resources for nursing advancement is present. Additionally, utilizing the websites search option to locate EBP information provided over search 150 topic options. EBP information included disease specific data and overall implementation of EBP changes into clinical practice (“Implementation: The Linchpin of Evidence-based Practice Changes”, 2022).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Shanaa,
Thank you for your post and insight on EBP and the ANA. EBP is essential in today’s healthcare world and seems to be widely adopted. EBP has many beneficial outcomes including best practice, high quality patient care, reduction of cost, and lower turnover rates among healthcare professionals (Melnyk, & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). Personally, I have found EBP to expand my nursing knowledge and provide excellent care. It can be rewarding and expand critical thinking.
The American Nurses Association’s mission statement is “lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and healthcare” (American Nurses Association, n.d.). Their mission statement does not directly reference EBP, however their members have direct access to up-to-date research that is peer-reviewed. Alongside that, when searching their website for “EBP,’ countless evidence-based articles and research topics come up. I do wish they would directly reference EBP on their mission or goals, as they are a major factor in the nursing world and a resource for many.

Hi Mercedes thank you for responding to my post. I also was expecting to see EBP directly referenced with ANA. Although peer reviewed information sources reside throughout the web site I expected EBP be present on the dash board. ANA represent nurses, safety and best practice EBP is a huge component driving patient safety.

Hi Shanaa, thank you for your post. The American Nurses Association (ANA) works diligently to contribute to quality Healthcare delivery to maintain the wellbeing of the people. Nurses are encouraged to participate in professional nurses’ organizations such as the ANA due to the several benefits it provides to improve nurses’ competency skills to enhance quality Healthcare delivery. The organization leaders offer continued education on current evidence-based practice through constant research to impact care delivery (ANA, n.d.). Professional nurses organization periodically provides an update on contemporary approaches to support nurses’ decision-making and clinical skills to promote positive outcomes and enhance professional development (Vázquez-Calatayud et al., 2021).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Discussion: Week 1
For this week’s discussion, we were instructed to look at the websites of healthcare institutions and see how much EBP they use. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) was one of the healthcare organizations I examined. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is the federal agency in charge of ensuring that all Americans have access to safe and high-quality healthcare (AHRQ, 2022). The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) creates the knowledge, tools, and data needed to enhance the healthcare system and assist consumers, healthcare providers, and policymakers in making informed health decisions. It aims to develop data that demonstrates patients receive safe and high-quality care that is available, easy to access, and affordable, as well as collaboration with the US Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the evidence is understood and applied (AHRQ, 2022).
The goal of this group is to consistently improve healthcare safety for all (AHRQ, 2022). This agency has supported many initiatives aimed at improving healthcare across the country, such as Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes), which was financed to educate and equip primary care providers in remote locations to provide specialized treatment (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2022). The Re-Engineered Discharge (RED) effort is another AHRQ initiative. The initiative is a structured approach to assist hospitals in incorporating resources into discharge planning to lower readmission rates. Hospital readmissions and emergency department visits have decreased by 30% as a result of this initiative (AHRQ, 2022). There is a wealth of information on many study topics and projects available on the website. This group also publishes case studies, statistics, and press releases. Because of their goals of enhancing patient safety and quality of treatment, I believe this organization is grounded in evidence-based practice. It has graphs demonstrating how infections, readmissions, and other hospital-wide issues have decreased.
Evidence-based practice is a method of clinical practice that is diligent and problem-solving. In today’s healthcare, evidence-based practice (EBP) is one of the top priorities. Every clinician needs to be familiar with evidence-based practice. By examining this healthcare organization, I believed I had gained more insight into its mission, patient care improvement, and core competencies. According to Nurse.com, the best evidence is implemented into therapeutic practice based on acquired data from studies, such as patient choices and physician experiences. And there is no set formula for incorporating evidence-based practice into clinical decision-making. So, depending on the amount and quality of evidence obtained from studies. And there is a variety of evidence with an explicit emphasis on methodologies and pyramids (Nurse.com).
Additionally, what I liked best about the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality was that it invests in determining what works by utilizing research and statistics to address healthcare concerns. To increase the quality of treatment offered, they have nurses’ and medical viewpoints. AHRQ also develops diagrams and strategies to teach healthcare providers how to improve and apply innovative solutions.

Great Post Aeneas,
Due to Clark Memorial Hospital approach to patient care by implementing best practices it does appear they are a hospital that utilizes evidence-based practice. Nursing is an art and science it is important that providers stay current with research to implement best care practices (Walden University, LLC, 2018). I’m glad to hear that Clark Memorial Hospital provides diverse services to mental health population and includes family therapy in treatment planning. Evidence-based practice is needed to address clinical problems (Walden University LLC, 2018). Involving a support system in decision making for patients with mental health disorders is the best way to improve patient outcomes. The purpose of family therapy is to provide support to the person in psychiatric care and to strengthen the family emotionally so everyone can thrive (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, n.d.).

Hello Aeneas,
Great post! Using evidence-based practice to improve patients’ outcomes is essential. I work in psychiatry and behavioral health programs; therefore, different areas of specialties. We use evidence-based psychotherapies targeted interventions with our patients. For example, for patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we use trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), it is proven to be effective in treating PTSD symptoms (Sciarrino et al (2020). PTSD is a disorder that occurs after traumatic events or experiences. Events may be related to war, sexual assault, natural disasters (Watkins, Sprang, & Rothbaum, 2018).

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is an organization that focuses on ensuring the quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of the American healthcare system. AHRQ advances research that provides individuals information to improve healthcare services and assists individuals in making informed decisions (Databases, 2018). For example, AHRQ’s website is easy to navigate and provides access to essential information that can positively impact patient care.
This organization is grounded on evidence-based practice (EBP) principles. For instance, it has a Center for Evidence and Practices Improvement (CEPI) department responsible for generating, synthesizing evidence, translating scientific knowledge based on what works in health provision, and catalyzing improvement in care practice across the whole healthcare setting. Through CEPI, the organization has an evidence-based practice center program responsible for producing and synthesizing evidence through undertaking systematic evidence reviews using various robust methodologies to guarantee scientific rigor and unbiased reviews (Center for Evidence and Practice Improvement, 2022). Health professionals can effectively use the synthesized literature reviews for improved decision-making from the reviewed information. Furthermore, this department disseminates the scientific findings to ensure accessibility to critical healthcare information for better and improved clinical decisions.
AHRQ has all the components of an organization that is a quality-oriented healthcare organization that is patient-centered. This quality is achieved by adopting the evidence-based practice in making all clinical decisions (Bindman, 2017). Moreover, the organization has different divisions that coordinate and collaborate to attain the best standard of care for the patients. For example, the agency has five divisions charged with different mandates that complement each other to reach the overall goals and objectives of the organization’s mission.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
The healthcare organization website I reviewed is Texas Health Hurst-Euless-Bedford (HEB). After reviewing the mission statement, it revealed this organization is faith-based hospital in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. To ensure that nursing care was supported by evidence-based practice (EBP) I assessed whether their nursing department received any accreditations. Upon reading about the nursing department, they received American Nurses Credentials Center Pathway to Excellence. American Nurses Association awards this certification to centers that achieve nursing excellence based on positive patient outcomes related to nursing care (American Nurses Association, n.d.). Due to this designation as American Nurses Credentials Center Pathway to Excellence, I know that Texas Health HEB is a healthcare organization that care is rooted in evidence-based practice. Affordable Care Act (ACA) bases reimbursement on evidence-based practice and quality measures (Walden University, LLC, 2018). For nurses to provide best care possible it’s important for nursing departments to stay current with new research (Walden University, LLC, 2018). Research is the creation of new knowledge, or evidence-based practice, to address clinical problems (Walden University, LLC, 2018). Research provides a rigorous scientific approach to address clinical problems that leads to positive patient outcomes when implemented into nursing care and interventions (Walden University, LLC, 2018). Texas Health HEB prides itself on obtaining credentials to support their organization’s purpose to provide quality patient care. For this reason, I know this organization is rooted in evidence-based practice.

Hi Ashley,
Nice job on your post!
It sounds like Texas Health Hurst-Euless-Bedford (HEB) is great model for evidence based care. Arguably, I wonder if being faith based changes the type
of care for those with a different faith? Upon reviewing the hospital’s website, I found that they have received recognition from the World Health
Organization (WHO) for being “Baby Friendly” and dually, “…certified by the Joint Commission for Chest Pain and Heart Failure and as a Primary Stroke
Center (Texas Health Resource, n.d.).” According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018), “Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines are specific practice
recommendations grouped together,” which in this case is the EBP for the hospital’s chest pain and heart failure recognition by the joint commission. I
firmly believe that you are correct in stating that the Texas HEB is deeply rooted in EBP. Furthermore, the mission of the Joint Commission is to ensure
an, “…unbiased assessment of your quality achievement in patient care and safety (Joint Commission, 2021).” Texas HEB as certainly exceeded its goals
in obtaining certification as a Primary Stroke Center through EBP and best practice.

Hello,
Faith based care has more to the holistic approach to caring for patients. Texas Health Resource HEB has Pastoral staff that can visit patients as part of their care, but if someone is of another faith they can decline that service. All patients receive medical care based on evidence-based practice.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
I reviewed the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) to see where evidence-based practice (EBP) appears. While reviewing the NAHQ’s Code of Ethics, it was clear to see that using EBP is one of the organization’s priorities (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022a). The mission of NAHQ is to improve healthcare quality by preparing a competent workforce (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022b). This organization strives to “advance healthcare quality competencies and define the standards of excellence for the healthcare profession” (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022b). The organization describes how healthcare professionals remain committed to their profession through improving performance and processes, maintaining patient safety, and coaching and mentoring their teams to foster accountability (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022b). The Code of Ethics also stated that leadership should be amongst the healthcare professional’s priorities, stating how having a strong leadership basis can improve inter-professional relationships and even guide and mentor their colleagues to maintain a competent workforce (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022b). According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2018), a lack of EBP mentors or administrative leadership are barriers to evidence-based practice. The NAHQ staff work with the organization to further its mission of creating a quality, competent workforce through the use of evidence-based practice (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022a).
In a video clip by Walden University (2018), Marianne Shaughnessy emphasizes how nursing must be built on evidence; nurses should keep up with advances in science and medicine, and guide their practice with the best current evidence-based guidelines. The NAHQ provides a Healthcare Quality Competency Framework which is made up of 8 domains including patient safety, quality review and accountability, and performance and process improvement, to name a few (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022c). These domains then go into 29 competency statements and 486 skill statements, and the skills have progression levels from foundational to proficient to advanced (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022c). The skills in the program are required for healthcare organizations to meet their quality objectives, and healthcare organizations can purchase the NAHQ Competency Framework to strengthen their workforce while maintaining best practices (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022c). This program is a great way for facilities to make sure their staff are aware of current evidence-based practice and are using it at their place of work.
After reviewing the information on NAHQ’s site, I believe it would be a great tool for healthcare organizations to use. However, depending on the affordability of the program, I think it would be a barrier for many facilities to have the NAHQ program educate their staff. Many smaller facilities that are not part of a medical group or company likely would not be able to afford an extra cost like this, and usually, these smaller facilities are the ones who would likely benefit most from an EBP program and improving their processes. Nevertheless, I see that the NAHQ’s goal is to improve healthcare through the use of evidence-based practice and I think it would be a wonderful opportunity to have at your healthcare organization if it were possible.

Hi Alicja! In reviewing the NAHQ website, it is evident that its mission is to improve patient outcomes by decreasing variability in care. The NAHQ healthcare quality competency framework includes performance and process improvement and quality leadership and integration (National Association for Healthcare Quality, 2022). This organization wants to make measurable improvements in healthcare and EBP is an integral part of this. A higher implementation of EBP is correlated to high job satisfaction and unity among nurses (Kim et. al., 2016). Although I don’t see EBP mentioned specifically in the mission or goal statement, I can presume that best practices will be accounted for and applied in order to achieve their goal of improving processes while maintaining patient safety.

Main Question Post
Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) is a healthcare organization with many facilities across the state of NJ. RWJ University Hospital of New Brunswick is a teaching facility and “an innovative leader in advancing state-of-the-art care” (RWJBarnabas Health, n.d.). This non-profit teaching hospital includes a Level 1 Trauma Center and the first Pediatric Trauma Center in NJ. Their comprehensive website includes a section on medical research. This section touches on EBP and their goal on making it accessible across the state of NJ. The organization is promoting EBP by focusing on providing “high-quality patient care, leading-edge research, and world-class health and medical education” as an academic facility (RWJBarnabas Health, n.d.). This aligns with RWJ’s partnership with Rutgers’ research and clinical projects that contribute to EBP. The mission statement of the organization emphasizes the focus on improving patient care and outcomes. The highest quality of care is linked to evidence-based patient care. This is the focus of RWJ as they are invested in advanced research for the wellness of their community.
After reviewing their website, my perception of RWJ remains the same. This healthcare organization is committed to increasing the knowledge of its staff so that patients can receive the best care. RWJ has been designated Magnet status for many years which reflects their goal of emphasizing empirical outcomes. The best outcomes occur when staff is engaged and ask questions about “treatment and care, have the resources and skills necessary to search for and appraise research evidence, implement the evidence in practice, and evaluate its effectiveness” (Crabtree et al., 2016). Magnet hospitals support this higher order of thinking for nurses. This organization wants its health professionals to focus on patient safety through education. The “five core competencies for health professions education [includes] patient-centered care, interprofessional collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics” (Boller, 2017). This will help improve patient outcomes and reduce medical costs as well.

Evidence-based practice has become an integral part of the Healthcare system since its introduction due to the several benefits it entails. It serves as a guide to clinical decision-making to prevent harm and promote outcomes (Fulcher-Rood et al., 2020). Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2018) further explain that evidence-based practice promotes quality Healthcare delivery to improve outcomes and reduce cost.
Over the decades, the introduction of EBP has improved the performance of healthcare organizations as most of these organizations aim at providing quality care to the public to maintain the wellbeing of the people. Among these organizations is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is a Healthcare organization that relies on evidence-based practice to promote public health and maintain public safety. The mission of the CDC is to protect Americans by increasing the health security of the nation (CDC.gov, n.d.). The organization relies on scientific research to find solutions to existing and prevailing issues that threaten people’s lives. Members of the organization put in much effort in risk management, and this is achieved through critical analysis of potential threats and employing evidence-based practice to promote national health security.
The CDC is recognized for its massive contribution to public health. The organization’s performance is grounded in evidence-based practice as it continues to rely on scientific research to solve problems. It provides current guidelines to assist healthcare professionals in dealing with issues that affect the healthcare system. For instance, during the emergence of the pandemic, the evidenced-based guidelines provided by the CDC, such as social distancing, wearing personal protective devices, among others, were very effective in reducing the transmission of the disease and protecting healthcare professionals and the general public from the virus. The organization is applauded for its continual involvement in scientific research to provide reliable evidence to assist Healthcare professionals in providing quality care to maintain the wellbeing of the people.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Hi Marvis, I appreciate your contributions to this discussion and I also want to add that while the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is a major contributor to research and implementation of evidence-based practices, there are other health organizations that equally research into different parts of human health and produce evidence-based and peer review results on various part of nursing practice to improve care and patient outcomes. American Heart Association has an immense contribution in this regard. Apart from funding research into various causes of heart problems, the organization has a program called: Get With The Guidelines (GWTG). It is a hospital-based quality improvement program designed to close the gap between cardiovascular disease, stroke, and resuscitation. Each program provides the physicians and health workers with information, materials, and tools based on relevant evidence-based guidelines.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Evidence-Based Practice
The concept of evidence-based practice (EBP) has been around since Florence Nightingale in the 1800’s. EBP, as it is called now, help change healthcare to promote life through research based on objective data. EBP is defined as “a paradigm and lifelong problem-solving approach to clinical decision making that involves the conscientious use of the best available evidence with one’s own clinical expertise and patient values to improve outcomes for individuals, groups, communities, and systems (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018, p. 753).
The American Nurses Association (ANA) utilizes EBP into daily practice. Standard 13: Evidence-based Practice and Research The registered nurse integrates evidence and research findings into practice. The ANA states the registered nurse:
The ANA website mentions EBP in their journal of the American Nurse. “American Nurse is the official journal of the American Nurses Association (ANA). The journal reaffirms ANA’s initiatives and directly supports nurses in advancing the profession through practical, independent, evidence-based, and peer-reviewed clinical data and information. American Nurse is a comprehensive, timely, trusted information source” (American Nurses Association [ANA], n.d.). The ANA also utilizes EBP in their Improving Your Practice subset. Including the journals, the ANA continues to empower and educate nurses perform better in their practice. The goal is to improve patient outcomes at an individual and societal level.
I have always been apart of the ANA and my viewpoints are just as high now as they were before. From the beginning of nursing school, The Code of Ethics, or The Code was taught to me and stayed in my daily practice. As hard as nursing school was, The Code just always made sense. For those times I questioned situations, I would always review what the ANA has taught me. “The American Nurses Association (ANA) supports nurses to manage the complexities of modern health care and deliver consistently excellent care. From ethical dilemmas to health care reform, ANA works to ensure that no matter what the challenge – nursing continues to improve health care for all” (ANA, n.d.)
EBP in nursing ranges from all disciplines and specialty fields. “The World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested that health improving in communities is dependent upon nursing services underpinned by evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP refers to using the best available evidence for decision-making and providing efficient and effective care for patients on a scientific basis. Systematic implementation of EBP can enhance healthcare safety and improve patient outcomes (Li et al., 2019, para. 5). Community nurses is not my strong point, but as the literature demonstrates, EBP continues to help improve outcomes in healthcare.

RE: Discussion – Week 1 Jennifer’s Response #1
Hi Alex, I enjoyed reading the well informed and insightful post on how ANA plays a role in the EBP model. While conducting this weeks discussion I discovered there are many organizations such as ANA who provide quality resources regarding EBP. In addition community nursing can be challenging when attempting to deliver evidence based care. Community nurses face many obstacles, policies, and perspective that have to be considered when providing care because their purpose of being in the community is to use a person centered approach. According to Teodorowski, Cable, Kilburn, & Kennedy (2019) three pathways to assist with the delivery of evidence based practice include bottom-up, top-down, and collaborative (p.375). As a community nurse working such a diverse complex population it can be difficult to meet their needs utilizing EBP wit limited resources and support. Bowers (2018) also identifies having limited access to evidence based resources as a significant barrier when providing evidence based care. The lack of research and training needed to increase the delivery of evidence based care in the community has caused an affect on patient outcomes as well as improvement.

RE: Discussion – Week 1 Jennifer’s Response #1
Hey Jenn:
Well said. In my original post, community based nursing is just as important as the hospital setting. Unfortunately, the hospital setting was all I ever knew. With my change in employers, I try to open my eyes to the bigger picture if you will. The hospital setting can fix the acute changes, but when the patient is discharged to the community, the nursing profession still continues. With better resources for the community, the rehospitalization rate should decrease and in turn increase survival rates for those who need community care. You are so right describing the community as such a diverse population. Location, ethnicity, and financial status are just a few of the obstacles that come to mind. As EBP and research continues, better outcomes will follow.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
The utilization of evidence-based knowledge can drastically improve population health and empower the public by increasing awareness of health risks and prevention strategies to improve quality of life (Melnyk et al., 2018). As nurses, we are educators of our patients. We must disseminate information that will enable each patient to make decisions to improve and protect their health (Boller, 2017). The website I found is a wonderful resource for patient education. The Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) website provides public education on national health initiatives (National Health Initiatives | health.gov, n.d.). The ODPHP outlines four health initiatives on the website. These initiatives include Healthy People, Healthy Aging, Healthy Literacy, and Health Care Quality. The ODPHP lists measurable goals for each decade and actions to improve population health for each topic. There are evidence-based educational articles available to the public in each section. These include the latest dietary and exercise guidelines (Healthy People | health.gov, n.d.), fall prevention, activity guidelines, nutritional information for the elderly (Healthy Aging | health.gov, n.d.), and education for the prevention and maintenance of chronic diseases (Browse Evidence-Based Resources – Healthy People 2030 | health.gov, n.d.).
I was very impressed by the scope and amount of evidence-based information available on this website. The goals for each area were simple, measurable, and attainable. The data was presented so that the general public could understand. Practical tips were offered to empower individuals to make better health choices. The website is a valuable resource to pass on during patient education. I was not aware of this government entity, and I will be accessing the information on this site for both personal and professional use.

Hi Kathleen,
I am thrilled that you chose the healthy people initiative for 2030 as your topic. The website discusses 355 core objectives, including research (Healthy People | health. gov,2022). The website also addresses social determinants, which are vital components of research that shed light on a population’s quality of life. If we can understand these determinants, we can better address them. Healthy People 2030 is heavily invested in research. Dozens of research will contribute to reaching its goal (Healthy People | health. gov,2022).
The evidenced-based practice relies heavily on research and the need to remain current with said practices to achieve the best patient outcome in an ever-evolving society (Melnyk et al., 2014). ). Healthy people of 2030 looks at research and trends spanning a decade.

The American Heart Association’s (AHA) aim is to“ fights heart disease and stroke, striving to save and improve lives. The Association’s mission is “ to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives”. AHA is a science-based organization, and AHA researchers note that all data shared by the organization is “supported by scientific studies published in recognized journals and have a rigorous review and approval process” (AHA, 2020). This process maintains the integrity and validity of their content, and as researchers suggest, “Integrity is associated with leadership in various ways” (Palanski & Yammarino, 2009). The AHA’s Evidence-based practice (EBP) appears under its professional resources. Evidence-based practice is critical in deciding on how to promote good health or provide care (Laureate Education Producer, 2018). A lot of funds are directed to research into different parts of disease processes that contribute to a heart attack like Aortic Stenosis, Hemorrhagic Stroke Initiative, and so on. According to AHA, patient outcomes improve when hospitals and healthcare providers follow evidence-based best practices to develop, manage and implement high-quality care (AHA 2022). The organization promotes high-quality patient care around the world and prints journals based on peer review for the members.
It is evident that the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association(AHA/ASA) base their practice on grounded organizations work, such as the research teams’ “reviews”, relevant scientific literature on a wide spectrum of clinical and health services topics, to produce various types of evidence reports, and these reports are later used for informational purposes, developing quality measures, as well as developing clinical practice guidelines. The organization collects data at the patient`s level in hospitals that participate in quality programs and the collected data are used as a database for quality improvement programs by the hospital and research at the national level. The information I have gathered on the AHA page has opened my eye to the fact that it is not only the Red Cross Association, that train individual, organizations, and communities for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and it has exposed me to the enormous contribution of the AHA organization and affiliates in the field of health science and how they finance various research institutes who are researching into a different aspect of human health. I also learned that Evidence-based Practice is not limited to hospitals, there are other non-profit organizations that are involved in research and publications of health journals for the benefit of humanity.

Hi Nimota, thank you for your post. The American Heart Association (AHA) is noted for its massive contribution to cardiovascular health. The organization relies on evidence to provide solutions to assist the public and healthcare professionals in dealing with issues associated with cardiovascular health. For instance, through their scientific research, the organization offers the standard for identifying and providing emergency interventions for stroke prevention, which has helped reduce the complications associated with the disease (AHA, n.d). The AHA provides evidence-based practice, which assists healthcare professionals in making informed decisions and delivering quality care to promote outcomes (DuBose-Briski et al., 2019).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
Evidence Based Practice
Evidence based practice is an approach implemented utilizing evidence gained through research along with sufficient data to provide quality care to patients. According to Melnyk, Ford, Long & Fineout-Ovreholt (2014) research has shown the impact EBP has made on healthcare delivery, outcomes, and financial effectiveness when incorporated into clinical settings and care models (p.5). Although EBP is considered the most effective way to deliver care there are still improvements needed. Many organizations do not have the resources or technology available so that healthcare providers can efficiently provide EBP care.
Texas Department of Aging and Disability
An organization that is utilized by a large population that was chosen for review in Texas is the Department of Aging and Disability. This is an organization that provides services to the disabled and elderly population known as DADS. DADS is a part of the larger system through the Health and Human Services Department. Texas Aging and Disability(2016) identifies their core values as an organization that strives to provide culturally competent person-centered care which is data informed to ensure quality services are provided to those in the communities they serve (p.1). In addition, to meet the needs of individuals through an EBP model a Quality Monitoring program was created to decrease the insufficiencies occurring in long term care facilities. Upon completing the review of DADS it is apparent that their organization is based on an EBP model and provides resources to those who utilize their services.
Conclusion
In conclusion, after researching the Texas Department of Aging and Disability I have another perspective for what they truly provide to our communities. The resources that were made available to ensure EBP are implemented in long term care facilities were impressive considering the reports made against nursing homes. The website provided resources for healthcare workers addressing infection control, fall prevention, indwelling catheters, and incontinence as well as other risk factors. As a nurse having access to essential information and being able to educate others is important when delivering quality care and decreasing negative outcomes of patients. In addition, implementing EBP “knowledge and skills” through education and leadership can change the culture of organizations leading to improved care delivered by healthcare providers (Crabtree, Brennan, Davis & Coyle, 2016, p.174).EBP is an important concept that requires more education and easily assessable resources to ensure the needs of patients are met, increasing overall outcomes while managing the cost of care effectively.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
I enjoyed reading your discussion and the three-year strategy by The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). I learned that funding is received from the Administration of Community Living. It is an all-inclusive organization that promotes awareness and provides services despite disability (hhs.texas.gov, 2022). This was a great website and topic to choose as once the organization was overseen by HHS, a guide called “Local Advisory Best Practice” was created that outlined the vision of the program, group composition, meeting frequencies, and topics of discussion, to name a few (Local Advisory Group Best Practices Aging and Disability Resource Centers Texas Health and Human Services Commission, 2017).
The need for deficits in nursing homes is an area needing significant improvement. DADS addresses that topic and fifteen others, including veteran services and respite. The group holds surveys to see if they satisfy the requirements of the people. 95% agreed that DADS is reaching its target goal (Local Advisory Group Best Practices Aging and Disability Resource Centers Texas Health and Human Services Commission, 2017). Surveys were also used in a study where nurses’ confidence levels were assessed based on Completed EBP Nurse Scholars Course Projects (Crabtree et al., 2016). The group has its best practices and questions about how effective each practice is (Local Advisory Group Best Practices Aging and Disability Resource Centers Texas Health and Human Services Commission, 2017).
Evidenced-based practice requires staying current with trends supported by best practices, and we must remain current with the latest practices (Walden University, 2018). DADS does this by holding meetings and holding themselves to a high standard by questioning many aspects of their goal. Some of which include room for improvement and if members are allowed to provide feedback (Local Advisory Group Best Practices Aging and Disability Resource Centers Texas Health and Human Services Commission, 2017).

RE: Discussion – Week 1
“Nursing is said to be an art and science. Research relates to the science portion” (Walden University, 2018). Evidence-based practice uses research and best practice to receive the best possible patient outcome. As better stated by Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, “Although evidence from systematic reviews of RCTs has been regarded as the strongest level of evidence (i.e.level one evidence) on which to base practice decisions about treatments to achieve the desired outcome, evidence from descriptive and qualitative studies as well as from opinion leaders should be factored into clinical decisions as part of the body of evidence” ( Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018, p. 10).
Evidenced-based practice is multifaceted and includes many sources. We use data collected by scholars, vetted websites, and books, just no name a few. The common goal is that the information used must be reproducible and based on evidence. Evidenced-based practice is a lengthy process that is ever-evolving. A practice that meets yesterday’s goals may not be the best option today. For this reason, research is constantly being performed to achieve optimal patient outcomes (Melnyk et al., 2014).
Many stray away from using websites due to the idea that it may not be proper for a scholarly article. One such site is “Wikipedia”; however, many websites have a wealth of evidence-based data. One such site is “Global Health Observatory (who. int)” (GHO,2019). The title page itself allows one to search various topics ranging from covid 19 to air pollution, immunizations, and many other topics. (GHO, 2019). Relevant data and statistics support each topic. Each topic is firmly rooted in evidence-based practice.
After much browsing, dementia became of interest. According to WHO, “The Global Dementia Observatory (GDO) is the monitoring and accountability mechanism for the Global action plan on the public response to dementia 2017-25. It collates data from the WHO Member States on 35 key dementia indicators to strengthen countries’ ability to respond to the needs of people with dementia, their care, and their families. As of August 2021, 62 countries have contributed data to the GDO during the first round of data collection (2018-2020). The next round of GDO data collection is planned to commence in 2022″. (GDO, n.d.).
The website details the number of individuals living with dementia, which is 55.2 million. Globally, dementia cost 1.3trillion in 2019 Discussion: Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?. Data from the same year shows that it is the seventh leading cause of death, and women are 65% likely to die from dementia-related deaths (GDO, n.d.). I was unaware that women are the ones who are more prone to die. My impression was that men pass away from dementia-related illnesses more than women. The WHO website shed a new perspective and has changed my viewpoint on dementia in general. It is much more costly than I understood. What I have written is just a brief scope into the enormous amount of data that can be found on the website, and it covers the gamut from air pollution to AIDS/HIV (GHO, 2019). After taking a thorough look at the website, I can say with certainty that this will be a future resource to support certain bodies of work.

RE: Discussion – Week 1
The Joint Commission
“Evidence is a collection of facts that are believed to be true” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). Basing research off evidence seems to be the best way to ensure best practice. Through reading different literature I have found that it seems to be the trend that nursing organizations and leadership are all in on evidence based practice. Evidence based practice is something that appears to have a stronger presence in nursing rather than physicians. While I am not surprised by this, I am saddened by it. I feel that physicians should be at the same level as nurses with utilizing evidence based practice.
I think when working in a hospital facility, we have all heard of The Joint Commission.
