The 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report To Err Is Human is recognized for having influenced the advancement of technology in the healthcare sector and its application to raise the bar for patient care (Bates & Singh, 2018). There had not been any notable use of technology in the healthcare industry up until that point. According to the IOM analysis, medical errors in US hospitals at the time of the report resulted in about 98,000 avoidable deaths annually. The IOM suggested that adopting technology would help reduce the rampant errors by medical personnel in healthcare settings. After the IOM study, another ten years would elapse before regulations mandating the use of technology for the gathering, preservation, and manipulation of patient data and records was passed by the federal government (Layman, 2020; Sweeney, 2017). All healthcare establishments are required by law to utilize an electronic health record (EHR) system that is certified and compatible. This database keeps track of patent details in addition to health history data, including demographics, treatment information, test results, imaging scans, and other data. Clinical decision support systems, or CDSS, are renowned for their creative and legendary versatility because they can be linked into EHR systems (Kwan et al., 2020).
