Evaluation in Nurse Anesthesia Education Essay Paper
Clinical Evaluation Tools
The three most common clinical evaluation tools are questionnaires, Self-Assessment Tools, and Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The selection of any of these tools is affected by various factors such as resources, the goals of the assessment, the target population, and the desired level of objectivity (Øvrebø et al., 2022). This is due to the different purposes that each tool may be preferred since each has advantages and limitations in its implementation. The three are often used in the multi-method approach to comprehensively understand students’ condition or behavior.
Questionnaires
This tool requires participants to answer questions about students’ thoughts, emotions, and actions. The main pro of this tool is its cost efficiency since the questionnaires are cost-effective, easy to administer, and offer insights into experiences (Rafii et al., 2019). Most commonly, this tool is used in assessing psychological entities such as anxiety and depression among students. The main disadvantage of this tool is that data may be affected by social desirability bias and lack of self-awareness, where students might not accurately perceive their experiences. Self-Assessment Form
These tools encourage students to look at student’s abilities, areas of growth as well as strengths toward a specific task or goal. The greatest advantage of Self-assessment tools is their ability to encourage students to appreciate and, in so, take ownership of students’ development and learning in nursing. The tool allows the students to be self-aware, understand their strengths, and appreciate their weaknesses, prompting them to strive to improve by helping them set personal learning goals. However, the greatest disadvantage of using this tool is that the self-assessment process might be influenced by students’ lack of experience in clinical practice. Combining self-assessment with other evaluation methods is important for a comprehensive view.
DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills)
This tool entails trained professionals or researchers systematically documenting and analyzing students’ behavior within contexts. This method provides objective information about students’ behavior, particularly useful for assessing conditions like autism spectrum disorder or studying interpersonal dynamics (Elisha et al., 2020). Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge that observations may be subjectively influenced by the observer and require time investment. Additionally, the students may alter their behavior due to the presence of an observer (observer effect). Evaluation in Nurse Anesthesia Education Essay Paper
