Functional Patterns Discussion Paper
Functional patterns allow a nurse to better consider the patient’s past and present health status because they offer insight into the services given to the patient and the change or reaction displayed by the patient. Functional assessment involves functional patterns that include dietary intake, health management, physical activity performance, lifestyle, sleeping routine, and so on. It offers a framework for entry assessment, such as physical assessment and taking history (Themes, 2016). Nursing history gives a clear understanding of the patient’s functional patterns. Subjective information is that which is obtained from the patient, while objective information is gathered by the nurse practitioner through observation. These functional patterns provide a nurse with an understanding of the patient’s issue and assist them in making a diagnosis. The activity exercise of the patient needs a thorough evaluation when the patient has a condition that influences the pattern (Themes, 2016). These aspects tell the patient’s functional patterns and engagement. This may be used by a nurse to educate, implement strategies of promoting health and minimize the risk of potential disease. It allows nurses to make provision for teaching plans of care.Functional Patterns Discussion Paper

For example, for a patient suffering from end-stage kidney disease, it is essential to recognize the functional patterns including feeding, sleeping, and physical activity of the patient. If the patient wants to consume processed meats and pickled food, the nurse can educate the patient on avoiding the consumption of these foods and advise the patient to improve the intake of nutritious green vegetables as they are beneficial for their health (Narva et al., 2016).
