HIPPA is a rule that helps protects a patient’s privacy when it comes to their health or medical information. It is also known as a security rule that helps in protecting electronic health information as well. As in the health care patient safety and confidentiality is an important rule to follow at all times. A standard of HIPPA is privacy. When it comes to privacy it is meant by protecting a patient’s medical information in any form needs to be controlled at all times. Confidentiality is defined as the protection of personal information. It means keeping a client’s information between the health care providers and the client. Every single patient has the right to privacy regarding their personal information from being released to anyone outside of their health care providers. Health care providers have a legal and ethical responsibility to protect all information regarding patients by not disclosing their information to anyone without their written consent from the patient.
The “Patient Bill of Rights” was adopted in 1988 by the U.S. Advisory Commision on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Healthcare Industry to assure and protect patients’ rights. These rights provide the patient with several responsibilities to safeguard their personal information. Patients have the right to accurate and easily understood information. They are entitled to know treatment options, participate in decisions concerning their care, can refuse treatment, and be informed of the possible consequences of refusal of treatment. Patients have the option to designate an individual who can make decisions for them. They have the choice of providers and plans including out of network health care providers. Patients have the right to access emergency services without authorization or financial penalty if their health is in critical danger. They have the right to complain or appeal any options regarding their health care.
