Concepts analyzed in the article
Chiwaula et al. (2018) analyzes evidence-based practice (EBP) as a concept. In this case, EBP is presented as an abstract idea generalized from nursing practice in terms of its potential for improving quality of care, and producing desired benefits for patients, providers and health care system. In this case, the focus is on examining EBP for its structure, attributes and characteristics. For that matter, it helps in refining EBP for a common understanding, and refining its content for the nursing principles. The rationale for choosing the concept of EBP is to formulate a clear, precise operational and theoretical defining to be used in nursing studies, choosing measuring instruments that accurately define the characteristics of EBP when measured, and accurately identifying EBP in nursing practice and research. Chiwaule et al. (2018) explains that a literature review method was applied. This involves searching for literature from a variety of sources to include dictionaries, PubMed, Google, Google Scholar, and Hinary. The search was conducted using search terms: concept analysis, evidence based practice (EBP), evidence based decision making (EBDM), evidence informed decision making (EIDM), and methods of concept analysis. The search was restricted to materials published from 2005 to 2018, to include research articles, books, web pages and dictionaries. The search results initially identified and accessed 67 materials with 30 of them being discarded for not meeting the inclusion criteria thereby leaving 37 for meeting the inclusion criteria.
Data synthesis
The data synthesis process followed the Walker and Avant’s strategy method of concept analysis. In this case, the synthesis followed an eight-step process. First, selecting the concept. Second, determining the aims and purpose of the concept analysis. Third, identifying all uses of the concept. Fourth, determining the defining attributes of the concept. Fifth, constructing a model case for the concept. Sixth, constructing borderline, related and contrary cases for the concept. Seventh, identifying antecedents and consequences for the concept. Result of concept analysis
The concept analysis generates new insight that contribute to theoretical development of EBP. It provides an operational definition of EBP. Applying the strategy method of concept analysis described by Walker and Avant, the study identifies the attributes and characteristics of EBP and its theoretical and practical application to nursing. The sample cases are well described to further illustrate the definition of the concept. In addition, the results reveal that EBP has the attributes of asking relevant clinical questions, using the best current evidence, integrating practitioners’ expertise and experience, incorporating patient preferences, values and concerns, and applying evidence in making decisions concerning nursing care. Besides that, the results reveal antecedents of EBP that creates conditions favorable for EBP to include supportive leaders, necessary EBP knowledge, skills and confidence, necessary resources and evidence, and gap in nursing care practice. In essence, the article provides a functional definition of EBP concept, identifying it as a problem solving approach that involves nurses asking clinically relevant questions, assessing evidence available to them from research and contextual factors, appraising and synthesizing the evidence to interpret it, combining the evidence with experience of nursing care stakeholders, and applying the lessons learned in making decisions that improve nursing care practice and outcomes (Chiwaule et al., 2018; Gray & Grove, 2020). The concept analysis examines EBP for its semantic structure with a focus on the defining attributes to enabling nursing have the same understanding of what EBP implies. It refines and clarifies EBP concept in research, practice and theory, thereby helping in arriving at a precise operational and theoretical definition for use. The outcome of the analysis is a set of defining characteristics that tell readers who EBP is and is not, thereby allowing for a clear, operational and precise definition to be used in nursing. With good concept analysis, practitioners are able to recognize, discuss and define EBP. This all contributes to facilitating progress in nursing science at the conceptual and theoretical levels thereby enabling systematic and cohesive developments in nursing discipline (Giddens, 2022).

A proposed concept of interest to advanced practice role is pain. That is because pain is a common and subjective experience. Efforts to address pain are accompanied by concerns about opioid use. A concept analysis of pain is necessary for comprehensive pain assessment as the first step in effective pain management. It is important to note that inadequately managed pain can lead to adverse psychological and physical outcomes. In addition, failing to understand pain could result in treatment being abused with far reaching consequences that include addiction and dependence.
