Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies encompass natural products or practices used outside or alongside conventional medicine to promote health. This approach has gained popularity over the years due to the belief that the standard treatments are inundated with more potential harm than good (Lewis et al.,2020). This manuscript explores how the CAM approaches can be incorporated into end-of-life care, the challenges associated with its use, and the nurse’s and patient’s shared roles in care plan development
Nurses face numerous challenges while providing alternative therapies for patient care. Most CAM approaches may not be completely safe. There is minimal scientific research and proof of their efficacy. Moreover, many alternative treatment approaches are not approved by most regulatory bodies. Consequently, their incorporation in treatment may culminate in undesirable outcomes in patients -a phenomenon that may lead to dire legal implications (Lewis et al.,2020)Holistic Care and Treatments Essay Discussion.
According to Lewis et al. (2020), CAM therapies can be integrated into the end of life to achieve a peaceful and comfortable death for patients. In many settings, the terminally ill patient is only offered medication for pain control. However, nurses can also offer therapies such as soothing aromatherapy, blending breaths and co-meditation, healing touch, acupressure, massage, and reflexology. Nevertheless, nurses may face some ethical issues while offering these therapies. One of such ethical issues is the scope of practice. Nurses may not have the competency to administer these therapies effectively.
Consequently, some key elements of CAM therapies should be incorporated into the teaching plan of nurses. Nurses should learn about myriad CAM therapies and how to implement them. Further, nurses should acquaint themselves with ethical issues surrounding using these therapies at the end of life. This move will enable nurses to effectively guide the patients in utilizing CAM therapies, thus enhancing their efficacy (Lewis et al.,2020)Holistic Care and Treatments Essay Discussion.
Nurses and patients play a critical role in developing the care plan. The patient has an inherent right to contribute toward care; hence, the nurse must respect his/her wishes and concerns. On the other hand, the nurse should utilize his/her skills and knowledge to develop an evidence-based care plan (Lewis et al.,2020)Holistic Care and Treatments Essay Discussion.
