The patient scenario involves a 26 year-old Spanish speaking patient who presents to the clinic for the last 2 days in a row complaining of abdominal pain that is getting worse. There are many factors associated with this patient scenario that can affect the obtaining of a health history and implementing a plan of care. The first factor being a language barrier, and other factors including her level of education, and includes the cultural aspect of her younger sister being involved with her plan of care due to her translating capabilities. Issues to be Sensitive to

Issues to be sensitive to with this specific patient include privacy sensitivities, for example, the patient may not want her daughter to know her medical information so she may request or benefit from a certified translator. Another issue to be sensitive to is education level and extent of medical knowledge; this patient may understand retain information or provide information better via pictures, pamphlets, or by writing/reading. Another issue to be sensitive to is bias. We as healthcare providers take oaths to not judge or bias, but we all know that biases are still there. “Removing cultural blindness at the individual patient level is an important first step (Ball et al., 2019)” in the pursuit and continuation of excellent patient care and would benefit Ms. Hernandez and her plan of care.
