Infection Prevention and Control Paper
Step 1 (Research Analysis)
Research Article | Gammon, J., Hunt, J., Williams, S., Daniel, S., Rees, S. & Mathewson, S. (2019). Infection prevention control and organizational patient safety culture within the context of isolation: study protocol. BMC Health Services Research, 19(1), 296. doi: 10.1186/s12913-019-4126-x |
Professional Practice Use | The referenced article reports that health care associated infection (HCIA) is a source of concern since it causes mortality and morbidity. It mentions that infection prevention control (IPC) has been particularly successful in addressing the concern of HCIA. However, it notes that although effective, IPC is not sustainable due to cost concerns and implications for antimicrobial resistance. Given this awareness, the study seeks to investigate ways in which medical personnel can apply IPC principles and strategies to inform and shape organizational patient safety culture within the context of isolation. The results of the study are anticipated to inform IPC innovation with regard to improving health care and clinical practice while addressing the cost concerns and implications for antimicrobial resistance (Gammon et al., 2019). |
Strengths of the Research | The main advantage of the study is that it applies a primary research approach that personally collects data thus ensuring that the data is related directly to the study objectives. Another advantage is that it uses a combination of qualitative research methods that allow for generation of data that offers new insights. Yet another advantage is that the research acts as a collaborative forum that allows health care professionals and academics to contribute towards offering an objective and an objective understanding of IPC (Gammon et al., 2019). Limitations of the Research | Although the qualitative approach applied in the study offers in-depth knowledge of the underlying motivations and reasons surrounding IPC, it presents a verification limitation. That is because it adopts an open ended approach that increases the participants’ control over the collected information thus making it difficult to objectively verify the results. Another limitation is that it is difficult to investigate casualty relationship for IPC in the study environment. Consequently, there is a possibility of the results not offering an accurate assessment of IPC. |
Relevancy to Topic of Interest | The research is relevant to the topic of improving health care outcomes since it offers the possibility of generating new ideas for IPC innovations that would improve patient safety in isolation settings. |
Step 2 (Summary Analysis)
Identifying and analyzing peer review research begins with first identifying the topic of interest, and key words and phrases that characterize the topic. This is important since it guides the library and database searches for relevant articles. Next, the search parameters are set to include any restrictions such as geographical location and publication data. This is important in determining publication relevance since these are demographic and time issues that have implications for population of interest. The search is the conducted in reputable databases with priority set for peer reviewed publications that can be trusted to offer valuable information. Finally, the information from the selected articles is subjected to thematic analysis that identifies that main themes noted in the publications, arranging them in an ordered manner.
One strategy that is effective in finding peer reviewed research is the use of inclusion and exclusion criteria that restricts library and database searches to peer reviewed publications. This is a search function available in reputable databases whereby users are offered the option of restricting the articles searches to peer reviewed publications. The second strategy is to identify the peer reviewed publications prior to conducting the search then selecting articles that are published in these publications. This strategy has proven useful when conducting searches in databases that do not have the option of restricting searches to peer review publications. In such a case, a blanked search is conducted before only selecting articles from peer reviewed publications.Infection Prevention and Control Paper
A useful research in the search for peer reviewed publications is Google Scholar. This is a free subscription database that is published by Google and offers access to scholarly literature that include technical reports, preprints, books, theses, and peer-reviewed papers. The publications are from a wide range of sources to include scholarly journals, universities, preprint repositories, professional societies, and academic publishers available across the internet. Also, it includes publications in different subject areas.
