Technology is continuously changing and evolving in healthcare today. The goal of technology in healthcare is to communicate more effectively in a more efficient manner. Electronic health records (EHRs) have played a considerable role in accomplishing that goal. EHRs are real-time, patient-centered records that make data available instantly and securely to authorized users and can be inclusive of a broader view of a patient’s care (HealthIT.gov, 2018). As mentioned in Laureate Education (2018), the paper chart served as the primary patient record of medical history, diagnoses, medications, and other pertinent data. Over time technology helped introduce the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists. This modernization in healthcare has many benefits permitting convenience to healthcare employees and patient roles.

According to McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017, EHRs hold the potential to transform healthcare; specifically, EHRs will lead to better health care, better health, improved efficiencies, lower healthcare, and better clinical decision-making. In actuality, one of the critical features of an EHR is that health information can be created and managed by authorized providers in a digital format capable of being shared with other providers across more than one health care organization (HealthIT.gov, 2018). Patients are qualified to have more control over their records with applications such as MyChart.

A healthcare technology trend that has been observed in my healthcare organization is the use of the MyChart Application. It is an App that can be downloaded to a Smartphone and easily accessible through the web. The App offers the ability to request appointments, request refills on medications, view lab results, on-going health conditions, and message your physician with any concerns. The better approach is to have interpretation and discussion with their physician about lab and test results. A benefit of the MyChart App is that each patient has their log-in; sign in and password; this helps protect their patient information. One future challenge with the use of these is safeguarding the patient and their rights, these apps and sites need to be secure, so it doesn’t compromise patient privacy (Skiba, 2017).

The use of social media and mobile applications is a healthcare technology trend that I feel will be incredibly beneficial and promising in contributing to enhancements in patient care efficiencies as it is easily accessible, convenient, time-efficient, and will be impactful in nursing practice. According to Skiba (2017), in the Connected Health Age, patients, families, caregivers, health care providers, health care administrators, and informatics specialists will be using digital tools to facilitate healthcare delivery. This is likely to contribute to upgrades in patient care outcomes and enhance efficiencies. More nurses become familiar with recommending social media sites and appropriate mobile health apps that offer tools, best practices, and guides. One particular social media app would be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a second resource from the Mayo Clinic. Providing assistance and recommendation on reputable sites will require your patients with the best tools to research health-related issues and will promote continued active and collaborative participation in their health. Discussion: Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists

Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration. Ant colonies and bee hives are but two examples of nature’s sophisticated organizations. Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive.

Of course, humans don’t fare too badly in this regard either. And healthcare is a great example. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular basis to ensure that appropriate data is available to make decisions and take actions to ensure the general well-being of patients Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues* on two different days, offering one or more additional interaction strategies in support of the examples/observations shared or by offering further insight to the thoughts shared about the future of these interactions.

An example of nursing informatics that is innovative and continues to evolve is the portal for patients to gain instant access to their medical records (Hron 2015). On June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court ruled on the constitutionality of electronic medical records with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ( PPACA ) (Little 2013). On January 1, 2017, new laws were enacted for Massachusetts residents receiving healthcare stating they were entitled to access their medical records electronically. Recently it became law that patients had the right to access their entire medical record which includes doctor’s visit notes, nursing notes, and results of all tests which include labs, imaging, and mental health information (Dowd, 2016). In theory, it is a patient’s right to have access to their medical information but there needs to have additional safeguards to educate and safeguard patients who do not have the medical knowledge to interpret and understand what they may read Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists.

CHA has  MyCHART, a portal for patients’ access to their medical records. This is useful in many instances. Patients may send a message to their primary care doctor, behavioral health provider, or any specialist they are connected with to ask NON Urgent questions. This is helpful for refills, asking for an appointment, advice, or concerns that can be followed up by the above providers. Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists

In the primary care setting in my clinic, the nurses read and respond to the MYC messages, handle or triage what they can, and schedule appointments if needed or recommend that patient immediately go to the ED for further assessment. There has been more than one occasion when we are called upon to call 911 and stay on the phone with the patient until EMS responds. This situation goes back to my earlier comment of patients sometimes not understanding that this portal is not appropriate for urgent messages.

Another concern is posted lab results, biopsy results, imaging, and recommendations for further testing or procedures that have not been yet reviewed by the individual providers. Nurses should not be the first-line responder to some of these concerns so we will send the message as a high priority response to the providers. Unfortunately, there is often a delay in a response to the patient as the providers are seeing patients, doing tele visits from home, or as an onsite provider for the day.

As always, I firmly believe that the application of data and technology has to find a place for the front line practicing nurse, including us in the development of health informatics. We have great ideas, commitment, passion, and intelligence.

This week’s discussion has helped me to better identify and understand the vital role that nursing informatics will continue to play toward health care reform going forward. I look forward to the coming years. The pandemic has opened another door for nursing informatics to reinvent ourselves as practitioners.

Nurse informaticists make a big difference in health care and patient outcomes by applying data and knowledge when needed Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists. As mentioned by Laureate , Nurse informaticists can work in a variety of nursing specialties and their help is needed in each and every specialty of nursing Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists. At my place of work nurse informacists or technology specialists play a very big role in making sure patient data is kept secure , the doctors and Nurse Practitioners use the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and I have seen first hand when the system gives them a hard time , or any new updates the technology specialist or Nurse informacist comes in to help .

My place of work uses both meditech as a Electronic Health record system to store patient data and all and also uses Meta for e-MAR /electronic medication administration record and these systems can fail us sometimes which is called down time , the technology specialist will help us transition to paper and later will put the information back into the e-MAR when the system is back up and running. The nurse informaticist will easily find out if the nurses mistakes from not scanning the ID bracelets of the patients when administering medications to giving scheduled medications either too early or too late and not in the prescriber window of administration , they find out easily and educate the floor nurses of any medication errors and how to further prevent them as medication errors are listed by researcher to be a huge cause of death in the US hence improving the quality of care of patients Interaction Between Nurse Informaticists and Other Specialists.

The interactions between the Nurse informaticist and other health care professionals can be improved by proper and timely communication between the two . Timely communication is very key in any kind of interaction or relationship ,and in health care is one of the major tools we use to better serve our patients and create patient centered care . For example , the doctor ordered a new PRN but couldn’t enter into the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) the frequency of the times he wanted the patient to have , the technology team had to be contacted to rectify the issue so as the prescriber could meet the exact medication needs of the patient. The impact of the continued evolution of nursing informatics and new emergence of technology to me looks very promising and positive in so many ways but also has its own disadvantages. Today technology has taken over nursing , there is so little time for a new to be by bed side with the patient because of the too much information that has to be entered by a nurse before the end of their shift . Nurses are doing more documenting than being by the bedside due to the increase demand of evolving technology , there is a lot of computer work that has to be completed including weekly trainings.
