Interview with a Community Health Clinic Nurse

Mariana Gonzalez is a community health nurse who works in a clinic within her community. She is a registered nurse with ten years of experience in community health nursing. She is a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA) and was found to be the most suitable person to answer five interview questions. The interview was conducted face-to-face on November 9, 2020. 1. Job Position, Work, and Population Served

Asked about her job position, the nature of her work, and the population covered by her services; nurse Gonzalez was forthright. She stated that she is a staff nurse at the clinic in which she works but is looking forward to be promoted to the position of nurse manager in the coming year. She works together with other three community health nurses in the clinic under the supervision of one nurse manager. On what she does in her present job position, nurse Gonzalez stated that it is basically to do with the promotion and protection of the health of the local population (WHO, 2017).Interview with a Community Health Clinic Nurse. Together with her colleagues, she assesses the healthcare needs of the community and plans for preventive health education and health promotion. They then collaborate with opinion leaders in the community and the local administration to reach and teach the community on disease prevention. They also sensitize the community on secondary prevention measures such as screening for colorectal cancer (Cruz-Correa et al., 2016). The population they serve is majority Hispanic and marginalized with unfavorable social determinants of health (M. 2. Day-to-day Activities

Asked to describe a few of the activities that take up most of her day, nurse Gonzalez stated that she gives health education to expectant mothers on proper diet, and dangers of smoking and alcohol consumption to the baby (there is rampant drug abuse in the community). She also counsels teenagers who present with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and suicidal ideation (there are many cases of teenage pregnancies and suicides in the community). 3. Community Health and Social Issues Experienced

On the community health and social issues nurse Gonzalez said that what she sees are many cases of domestic violence related to alcohol and substance abuse, rising cases of teenage pregnancies and STIs, suicidality due to depression, and high rates of colorectal cancer (M. Gonzalez, personal communication, November 9, 2020).

4. Stakeholders Needed to Address the Issues Experienced

Lastly, nurse Gonzalez was asked about the stakeholders that may be needed to address the above health and social issues in the Hispanic community she serves. She stated that as a clinic they do not normally operate in isolation. In particular, she stated that they normally collaborate closely with faith-based organizations (FBOs) to pull together funds and reach the community for sensitization and heath promotion. The other stakeholders needed to address the health and social issues are the opinion leaders in the community. The local administration including the sheriff’s office and the mayor are also important stakeholders as they provide important resources that are not of a monetary or financial nature for the purposes of health education and promotion.
