Laissez Faire is a type of leadership in which followers are given complete freedom to make decisions in the leader’s absence. That is why it is considered the most passive type of leadership within the leadership spectrum. (Ghorbanian, 2012). I can appreciate this type of leader; I also think a good leader has to know what type of employees they have and adjust their style if needed to obtain the end goals. Different leadership styles exist because people are, by nature, different in their traits, characteristics, and communication abilities. When asked to evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments I think about my current boss. My boss, Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) of BMC Surgical Services, my current boss has a laissez faire leadership style… BNurs et al. speaks of the negative impact of a leader with the laisse faire leadership style as being detached from their team. The Laissez-faire leadership style is characterized by the superior’s avoidance and inaction when subordinates are experiencing a situational need for leadership, which has also been identified in some care settings. (BNurs et al., 2020). I disagree with the finality of this statement when it relates to my ACNO. She has a “let it do” approach to her subordinates, she encourages us to approach all situations and only gives us guidance when we ask for it. She does allow us to make the wrong decisions and then she is there to pick us up and help guide us towards the correct solution. The leadership style portrayed by my ACNO to the management team has built a tight group of leaders who have the autonomy to make choices and the support for guidance if it is needed. I have been in healthcare for over 20 years, and I have an appreciation for this type of leadership style now, I have caught myself allowing my staff to make choices and decisions about how they handle their business. There will always be those who need guidance, what is wrong with letting them try on their own first without persuasion or interaction? Leadership Styles and Nurses Essay
