TOPIC: PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches. Leading And Managing in Nursing Assignment Paper

What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.

What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

FIRST COLLEAGUE’S FEEDBACK

Hello Mercy,

Delegation and empathy are two essential leadership traits that can greatly impact the effectiveness of a nurse leader. Incorporating these traits into your leadership style can enhance team performance, job satisfaction, and patient outcomes.

Before you delegate tasks, ensure that your team members have the necessary skills and knowledge. Offering training sessions or workshops can be a starting point (Yoder-Wise, 2015).

Understand that everyone may have a different approach to a task. As long as the outcome is efficient and safe, it’s okay if the methods differ from yours.

Always maintain an open line of communication. Allow team members to provide feedback on the delegated tasks, and ensure they know they can come to you with questions or concerns (Hansten & Jackson, 2009).

When interacting with team members, make a conscious effort to listen without interrupting. This displays respect and allows you to truly understand their perspective (Yoder-Wise, 2015).

Being aware of your own emotions and those of others can enhance empathetic responses. Regular self-reflection and seeking feedback can aid in this.

Engage in role-playing or case scenarios where you’re put in the shoes of another person, helping to strengthen empathy (Brunt, 2023).

By focusing on enhancing these traits, a nurse leader can create a work environment where team members feel valued, understood, and competent. As you correctly mentioned, effective delegation not only reduces workload but also aids in leadership development, while empathy ensures that you understand and respect the feelings and needs of your staff. Module 3: Personal Leadership Philosophy

Understanding self-leadership abilities is a crucial step toward becoming an effective leader. Having a leadership philosophy informs one and others about their competencies in leading. It also focuses the individual on their core values and leadership strengths as they lead others in different capacities (Speranza & Pierce, 2019). This paper presents a personal leadership philosophy. I reflect on my core values, mission, and vision statements. The discussion also encompasses an evaluation of self-assessment of my leadership strengths. It also includes the identification of two behaviors I plan to strengthen and a development plan.

Personal Core Values

My core values are integrity, empathy, reliability, positivity, and independence. I am honest and truthful in my actions. I strictly adhere to moral and ethical principles in my personal and work lives. I would say I am committed to doing what is right. I am also attracted to people who uphold honesty and truth. I would not hesitate to be a whistleblower if I found a colleague doing contrary to the clinical or professional standards. I am also empathic. I relate to people’s emotions and feelings. I love to understand individuals’ behaviors from their perspective. I avoid downplaying people’s emotions.  I believe that functional teams work best when everybody feels valued and appreciated. I also love being reliable. I am a punctual person who keeps track of objectives. I also ensure I meet my work-related and personal commitments. Besides, I am a positive person. I thrive where there is positivity. I am enthusiastic about life and my job. I also spread smiles and humor to others. Furthermore, I am an independent person. While I relate well with people, I love independence. I can make decisions without depending on other people. Leading And Managing in Nursing Assignment Paper

 Personal Mission and Vision Statements

My vision statement is” to be a nurse leader to create positive changes in nursing care by ensuring professionalism, ethics, and healthy work environments.” I envision healthcare organizations where staff uphold professionalism and ethical practices. I also look forward to establishing enabling work conditions for the nurses and other clinicians. I believe that a good work climate impacts healthcare quality and patient safety.

My mission statement as a nurse leader is “to influence, empower, inspire, and motivate nurses to provide professional and ethical nursing care.” I recognize the principles of transformational leadership: idealized influence, individual consideration, inspirational motivation, and intellectual stimulation (Broom & Marshall, 2021). I view transformative leadership attributes as essential pillars for modern nursing leadership due to the challenges that face the field today. Leading And Managing in Nursing Assignment Paper

Clifton Strengths Assessment Analysis

Understanding one’s leadership characteristics is crucial. Self-assessment helps leaders to understand their strengths and weaknesses. Several tools are available for personal assessments. One of the popular instruments is Gallup’s Clifton Strengths Assessment. The tool has 177 paired items that evaluate individuals’ leadership strengths based on four domains: executing, influencing, strategic thinking, and relationship building (Gallup Inc., 2023). I took the test to know my leadership strengths. The results indicated my top five strengths: communication, relator, positivity, discipline, and significance.  I learned that I have excellent verbal and writing skills. I love to express ideas and can grab my audience’s attention by being brief and concise. I also relate well with people. I build relationships with others without challenges.  I am also positive and inject energy into others. Also, I like to follow routines and focus on deadlines and timelines.  I also love being recognized for good performance and appreciate environments where I am accorded autonomy.  The Clifton Strengths Assessment results align with my core values, integrity, reliability, empathy, positivity, and independence.  My colleague recommended I improve empathy and delegation skills, which she identified as essential nurse leadership traits. The test confirmed my leadership strengths and I plan to use the results to strengthen my capabilities. Leading And Managing in Nursing Assignment Paper

Two Behaviors I Plan to Strengthen

Two key behaviors I would want to strengthen are communication and relator.   These two leadership traits are inherent in improving collaboration, staff satisfaction, and patient outcomes. Mrayyan et al. (2023) noted that communication is crucial in nursing leadership. Nurse leaders have to communicate units’ vision, nursing standards, and organizational policies. They also inform the nurses about changes and address resistance to enhance acceptance. Besides, the authors also explained that communication facilitates delegation. Nurse leaders should provide all information about the assignments they delegate and ensure they assign roles to individuals with the right qualifications and skills.  Developing good relationships with other nurses and other healthcare professionals is something I wish to pursue. Jankelova and Joniakova (2021) observed having healthy work relationships promotes collaboration in care delivery. It also eases leadership influence when implementing unit- or organizational-based quality improvement (QI) changes. I would want to develop communication and relationship-building to promote interprofessional collaboration, enhance nurses’ satisfaction, and improve patient outcomes.  Development Plan

My developing plan for the two selected leadership behaviors will involve strengthening specific attributes. I will start by improving my active listening skills. Active listening is an essential attribute of effective communication.  Morris (2023) noted that active listeners respect their speakers, request clarification, probe, and reflect on what is said.  The author explained that active listening is a significant ability for a nurse leader. Nurse leaders must clarify expectations. They should also listen to the staff and respond accordingly. Next, I will self-assess my emotions and understand how to control them to avoid interfering with my conversations with the nurses and other leaders.   Also, to improve my relationship-building skills, I will create an environment where everyone in my workplace feels included. Usually, as the Clifton Strengths Assessment results showed, I relate well with people I have established close relationships. I acknowledge the diversity within healthcare. Therefore, I should be approachable and accommodating.   I will also try to build trust with the staff and effective work relationships without favoritism. By improving communication and relationship building, I will promote collaboration among the nurses to enable them to improve patient outcomes. Leading And Managing in Nursing Assignment Paper
