Networking Opportunities – NURS 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Discussion
Networking Opportunities
Currently, I have been working in the healthcare field for 20 years in various roles. It was in 2012 that I began my career as a Registered Nurse. While working as a floor nurse, I wanted to advance my career, so I decided to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) on-line. At the end of the program, I was still unclear about what I wanted to specialize in order to advance into the Master of Nursing Program. Networking Opportunities – NURS 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Discussion After five years of learning about different areas to specialize in, I have chosen my passion for helping individuals in the field of Mental Health.
Once I realized Mental Health is what I wanted to specialize in, I began discussing University options with my fellow co-workers. As discussed in a Blog Post written by Schmidt, K. (2020), ” Professional networking can help nurses achieve the fundamental knowledge required to take the next step” (Professional networking is imperative to nursing career advancement section). It was concluded that Walden University is well known and utilized frequently within my organization, which also includes a specialization in the area of Psychiatric Mental Health (PMH). To have the opportunity and ability to focus just on this specialization provided me with some confidence that success could be achieved. Networking Opportunities – NURS 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Discussion. It was when I reviewed the University mission statement that this was the college for me. The Walden University College of Nursing mission statement is described as ” a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2020, Mission section), which is exactly the guidance I will need to succeed. It was also interesting to review how Walden defined positive social change. To be reassured that I will have a group of professional faculty members and an academic community promoting my individual growth, ideas, and producing actions within a social community provides me the confidence I have been seeking (Walden University, 2020, Social Change section) Networking Opportunities – NURS 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Discussion.
For me to achieve my goals as a successful Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I reviewed the MSN Learning Outcomes. Walden University not only promotes the delivery of the highest quality care, but it is also committed to the professional development of their students and to provide them with the tools that will be needed. The understanding that I will have the ability to effectively communicate, critique evidence-based literature to support decision making, and continue to build on the improvement of patient center quality care is a reward in itself (Walden University, n.d., MSN Learning Outcomes section).

As I read your post about becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, a few words distinctively stuck out at me – “ethical scholar- practitioner”. There are more ethical issues in mental health than I can attempt to count, however, wanting to become what you call an “ethical scholar- practitioner” could be life changing to a single mental health patient. Walden University encourages “students to become not just consumers of knowledge but also agents of change who contribute to the advancement of individuals, communities, organizations, and society” (Walden University, 2020). Integrating the ethical principles with the education provided by Walden University will help make positive social change towards the treatment and resources of the mental health community. Walden University strives “to help students reach their fullest potential, so they can be prepared to make a difference in the world around them” (Walden University, 2020).

Hi, in response to your comment about being a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), this is one of the most important decisions that I admire, and I also take this time to applaud your decision. You have stated that you are passionate to help individuals with mental health issues, this is already a good way to start. Walden University’s mission-vision statement is also committed to the professional development of their students and to providing them with the tools that will be needed (Walden University, 2020). The University educates students to work with diverse populations in a variety of settings with individuals with mental health issues in a professional goal as a PMHNP (Walden University, 2020). It is understood that mental health care is needed on different socio-economic level, so providing cost effective specialist nursing practice that contributes to high quality health care delivery is crucial (Walden University, n.d.).With that being said, I believe that Nurse practitioners have the opportunity to make a major impact in health care by promoting positive social change.

In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone. Networking Opportunities – NURS 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Discussion.
Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.
This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.
To Prepare:
Post a brief introduction of yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation as to how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Also include an explanation for how the Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by suggesting additional individuals and/or teams with whom you wish to collaborate or by offering additional networking strategies.
I am currently attending Walden to receive my MSN and, ultimately, become a nurse practitioner (NP). I have been a nurse for a little over six years, primarily in the Oncology field. I hope to remain in the oncology field when I finish my degree.
Walden’s (n.d.) states their vision is to advance the greater good. The mission indicates there should be a transformation in students to scholar-practitioners (Walden, n.d.). Networking Opportunities – NURS 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Discussion. A scholar-practitioner would use knowledge to drive commitment and ethical conduct (Miller, 2013). To become an NP, I feel I would be advancing the greater good as an NP can increase efficiency and effectiveness of care (Fowler, Landry, & Nunn, 2019). NPs also make care more accessible and improve patient satisfaction (Fowler, Landry, & Nunn, 2019). By transforming myself into an NP, I can utilize my knowledge to drive change in the world and ethically advance the greater good.
Nurses are taught from early on to follow one of the university outcomes, which is to practice ethical integrity (Walden, n.d.). By attending Walden and becoming an NP, I demonstrate my commitment to another university outcome: being a lifelong learner (Walden, n.d.) Networking Opportunities – NURS 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Discussion.
Another university outcome, specifically having a positive impact on my profession (Walden, n.d.), can be accomplished in part by professional networking. Professional networking can be achieved by being an active member of a professional nursing organization, such as the ANA (Schmidt, n.d.). Being a member of the Oncology Nursing Society fills not only this goal, but also the lifelong learning goal, as there are frequent networking and learning events sponsored by this organization. These events further our knowledge and understanding of providing the most up-to-date, evidence-based care to our patients.
