Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

According to Retz et al. (2021), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a disorder that is characterized by difficulty in controlling one’s impulsive disorder, excessive levels of activity, and sustaining attention. The main causes of this condition are generic factors, mainly the genes that regulate neurotransmitters such as dopamine (Retz et al., 2021). The difference in functioning and structures of basal ganglia and prefrontal cortex have also been linked with impulse and attention control. Also, some environmental factors such as alcohol, prenatal smoking or illicit drugs, low birth rate, exposure to toxins, and premature birth have been linked with a high risk of ADHD development (Retz et al., 2021).
