Introduction
Psychotherapy has been described by the American Psychological Association as therapeutic strategies that have offered recovery for numerous psychological conditions such as “the effects of stress, physical condition or failure, such as loss of a loved one; and serious emotional problems such as depression or anxiety” (APA.or). Some of these psychotherapies are compassionate and behavioral. This paper aims at comparing and contrasting the interpersonal and supportive psychotherapy
Similarity
Those two-psychotherapy frameworks adopt the same consistency and the same underlying therapeutic strategy. We concentrate on recognizing the clinical patient interaction and defining the context of growth and lifestyle (Wheeler, 2014). Furthermore, psychological conditions such as commitment problems, fear, transition, countertransference, unconscious memory, defences, inspiration, and resistance will be understood by IPT and SPT (Wheeler, 2014).
Differences
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
The framework to interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) follows a structured and short-term system with the awareness that many psychiatric conditions occurred based on interpersonal relationship changes (Wheeler, 2014). The IPT therapist needs knowledge in areas such as “interpersonal disputes, grief, role transitions, and interpersonal deficits” (Wheeler, 2014).
This psychotherapy paradigm has been established for people suffering from mental health problems such as depression. The psychiatrist is actively active as a professional mentor who leads the individual into knowledge about how their experiences might have been affected by intimate interactions with people in their lives (Ungvarsky, 2019).
Supportive Psychotherapy (SPT)
Supportive Psychotherapy (SPT) promotes the confidence, coping capabilities of the person, disengaging from issues, restoring productivity, and reducing symptoms (Wheeler, 2014). This psychotherapy style requires less coaching over IPT (Li et al., 2018).The minimal psychotherapist guide is used for counseling and supporting the patient in “building self-esteem, reducing anxiety, strengthening mechanisms for coping, and improving social and community functioning.” NRNP 6640: Psychotherapy With Individuals.
Impact and therapeutic approachpreference
The nurse-patient clinical relationship as a therapist focuses around communication and learning, exploring, and encouraging the individual to make better choices on their option of program. The option to choose IPT or SPT would be a judgment taken with evidence of disease, appraisal and not the nurse’s personal preference. IPT and SPT are both relevant for the treatment of multiple psychiatric disorders and I will use both as needed, with their effectiveness. NRNP 6640: Psychotherapy With Individuals.
