NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions
“What challenges do students in the MSN NP (any specialty) most commonly face in this program?”
Challenges that masters of science in nursing (MSN) students at Walden University (WU) face are not exclusive to students at WU only. Kauffman (2015), conducted a study to determine what type of student would excel in online learning, including a learning environment similar to the MSN program WU offers. NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions This study analyzed a variety of students in a vast array of online learning programs and found specific similarities shared by successful students in different programs. It also identified challenges online learners face in any online environment. Students with “aggression, tension, and external locus of control” were found to have lower success rates (Kauffman, 2015). Other significant challenges included difficulties with time management and loss of motivation (Kauffman, 2015). While this study may not have been done specifically on the Walden MSN program, based on the research, these findings can be applied to any online learning platform. “After graduation, how do MSN students at this school perform on their board exams?”
I was unable to locate pass rates for board exams on Walden University’s website; however, I was able to obtain some information. Walden University has a live chat feature, where I communicated with two different enrollment specialists. Both of these specialists confirmed that the exam pass rates were in the mid 80th percentile. NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions.
“Does Walden University provide resources to help study for exams after graduation?”
No specific exam preparation was identified, but in terms of resources for post-graduate success, WU offers a variety of services. Career services provide guidance with resumes, networking, job and internship search, webinars, and interview strategies, to name a few (Walden University Career Services, n.d.) NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions. With all of these academic and professional aids, success is obviously a goal at WU.
While no specific resources were found on WU’s website for board exam preparation, the instructors at WU do provide support to meet these needs. In Module 2’s resources list, an American Nurses Association (ANA) link was posted. This link has an abundance of career readiness materials, as well as certification preparation (American Nurses Association, n.d.). So to answer your questions, WU does identify help with board exam preparation NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions.
“Does anyone have any advice or resources for finding a clinical preceptor for the PMHNP program?”
Walden University offers preceptor support for finding and using local professions. There are webinars related to the search of precepts, and instruction on how a student confirms/varifies potential preceptors. On this same webpage, there is a link to a preceptor search through the American Associate of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) (Quick Answers, n.d.). Both of these resources, combined with local networking, can significantly increase students’ ability to find a preceptor. NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions.

In Module 1, you began building a foundation for your success by considering a network-individuals and teams who can help you to clarify and execute on the vision. A network is most helpful when you are comfortable asking questions. Chances are other members of your network have experienced similar questions and may have helped guide others toward resolutions that can now be helpful. NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions.
In this Discussion, focus on the questions you are ready to ask as your journey begins. Keep in mind that sharing questions is often a great way to help others who have similar questions even if they do not realize it!
To prepare:
Post any questions or concerns that you are willing to share with the group. The Discussion board represents an opportunity to network with your course colleagues, and others may have the same questions or concerns.
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering a possible resolution to their questions/concerns with supporting documentation, if possible, or expanding on their thinking and providing an example as support NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions.
I feel fortunate in that I do not feel overwhelmed by my questions at this stage in the program. I had many questions or concerns when I started my BSN program with Walden. However, since I completed my bachelor’s degree with Walden last month, many of those concerns are no longer a concern as I begin the MSN program. For example, I feel very well versed in the online curriculum with Walden. I am comfortable and confident in finding grades and instructor feedback. I feel satisfied with the work/life/academic balance required to do an online program. And I have a good idea of the due dates and the tools Walden offers to assist me. I will attempt to look through everyone’s posts and guide you through using my knowledge. NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions. If I miss your question, please feel free to reach out to me individually or in the class café, and I am happy to share my knowledge.
So, what concerns do I have with this program specifically? Probably my biggest concern is the preceptors I need for my practicums that start next May. Of course, because of my experience with the BSN program, I have already reached out to the field experience office and have done some research to find the qualifications of my sites and my preceptors.
Somewhere in my mind, I am sure there are concerns about taking my exams when I complete the program. However, given my experience with my NCLEX, and the fact I have sat for a certification exam, I am confident I will have all the necessary knowledge to pass this exam. NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions.
The only other concern I have is complacency. Having completed the BSN program with Walden, I do not want to become complacent with my studies and do poorly in this program. This fear played into my choice to begin my MSN program without any break following my BSN program.
If I could offer one solid piece of advice to my classmates at this time and in one post, utilize Grammarly for your writing. Even for your weekly discussion posts, go to the Grammarly website (app.grammarly.com), and paste your essay for corrections and suggestions on improvement. I believe I am a good writer, but this website has provided an enormous amount of help in getting me through thus far. You can find a link to the Grammarly website from the writing center’s home page as well. NRSE / NURS-6003 week 2 Discussion: Strategies for Addressing Questions.
