NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies
Introduction
When beginning my path to becoming a bachelor’s prepared registered nurse, we were told in our Leadership course that having a BSN is a necessity as it will soon become par for the nursing profession. Now, almost ten years later, the same is being said of a master’s degree. After graduating with my BSN in 2011, I was hired to a Medical/Surgical unit NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies. A year later I accepted a position in the Neonatal ICU where I have spent most of my career. In that hospital, it was a requirement that 80% of all newly hired nurses have a BSN or obtain one within five years of hire. More and more facilities are seeking Magnet status, which requires a degree from a large portion of their registered nurse leaders (American Nurses Credentialing Center, n.d., Nurse Leaders section). My employer’s higher expectations fueled my desire to obtain an advanced degree; however, the deciding factor was seeing the advanced practice registered nurses in action within the Urgent Care setting. The Family Nurse Practitioners, whom I now have the pleasure of working with, show their knowledge and love for patient care on a daily basis NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies.

The reasons for which I chose to attend Walden University were twofold. First, I had to research which nursing programs the state of Washington would allow clinical placement and, after graduation, licensure. The list had many choices, but my decision ultimately came after reviewing Walden’s background, which led me to my second reason for choosing this university for graduate study- aligned goals and outcomes. Because life is so busy, I needed “a distinctively different 21st-century learning community” so that I could obtain a master’s degree while also attending to the demands of everyday life with a family and career (Walden University, 2020a). I believe that having a university and instructors who genuinely care about me and the learning that takes place on an individual level will set the stage for success after graduation. Professional & Academic Goals and Outcomes
I have wanted to be a nurse since I was in high school. I always knew that caring for vulnerable populations was a work that I had been called to do, in the best way that I could. What better profession to do that than in nursing? Earning a BSN was difficult work, but I craved knowledge and enjoyed learning and understanding the health and illness processes and caring for not only the disease but also the person. It became important to me to learn from credible sources and search for unbiased information to build my thoughts and opinions. I wanted to be the nurse who cared for any person with love and understanding, regardless of their background or circumstances. Choosing to study and obtain a master’s degree through Walden University made sense on so many levels. Knowing that the Family Nurse Practitioner program was one where all of my own feelings matched the program values was important because it means that when all is said and done, I can expect to feel prepared and knowledgeable when providing evidence-based care to my patients (Walden University, 2020b). This is not only important for me as a future provider but for all those to whom I will give care NURS 6003 Week 1 Discussion Career Goals: Strengths and Challenges Related to Nursing Practice Competencies.

An advanced practice nurse collaborates and communicates with patients, families, doctors, nurses, and specialists to ensure patients receive the care they need. As they diagnose, treat, manage, and educate patients, they are responsible for ensuring patient safety and maintaining ethical behavior. Competencies have been developed to help the advanced practice nurse to understand the practice knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to be successful.
