NURS 6512 week 2 Diversity and Health Assessments
Assessing a patient is one of the most important tasks for a health care provider. The patient in the assigned scenario is a 32-year old pregnant lesbian experiencing vaginal discharge. She has had regular prenatal care and has a family history of diabetes. It is important to use the best approach in assessing the patient to ensure she is comfortable with her care. The five targeted questions I would ask this patient are as follows: NURS 6512 week 2 Diversity and Health Assessments
Each of the questions I asked for specific reasons. Asking about her health and family health history is to obtain more information about the history of diabetes. The later questions of roles in the family about meals can correlate to this question as well. Diet and meal preparation roles in a family are one of many parts of culture that should be taken into consideration (Ball et al, 2019). Gestational diabetes during pregnancy can lead to complications for the mother and baby (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).
Asking about support of her pregnancy will ensure she has the support systems she needs in place for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Ending the interview with an open ended questions about her health can allow the patient time to express any concerns she may have. Being aware and respecting cultural differences can improve assessment skills and allow for the best patient care (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Your post was great. You are accurate about the possibility of healthcare inequities for LGBTQ
people. Many patients thought they were poorly treated, dismissed, or disregarded and hence did
not say anything about their treatment for fear of further mistreatment (Rees et al., 2020).
Because this patient needs to feel heard, it is crucial to make sure they have a sense of that so
they will continue coming back to the same provider. To some extent, we all carry around certain
preconceived notions and prejudices — that’s just a part of being human. However, I believe
most healthcare professionals enter the workplace every day hoping to leave those
preconceptions behind when they do their work. We’re bound to make mistakes. We allow our
political preferences to prevent us from providing everyone with unbiased healthcare. NURS 6512 week 2 Diversity and Health Assessments
Some LGBTQ individuals may be reluctant to tell their healthcare practitioner about their sexual
preferences. Some additional LGBTQ patients felt they or their peers would treat differently, or
perhaps change doctors because they felt awkward. Many are made uncomfortable or feel like
they must judge a patient’s preferences when discussing anything besides heterosexual interests.
Patients depend on us to put their best interests first. We must leave personal spiritual beliefs out
of the patient visit. It would be good to join up for a course to learn how to negotiate a situation
like this assignment.

May 2012, Alice Randall wrote an article for The New York Times on the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain a weight above what is considered healthy. Randall explained—from her observations and her personal experience as a black woman—that many African-American communities and cultures consider women who are overweight to be more beautiful and desirable than women at a healthier weight. As she put it, “Many black women are fat because we want to be” (Randall, 2012).

Randall’s statements sparked a great deal of controversy and debate; however, they emphasize an underlying reality in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have diverse beliefs and practices that impact their health. Nurses and healthcare professionals should be aware of this reality and adapt their health assessment techniques and recommendations to accommodate diversity. In this Discussion, you will consider different socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be taken into considerations when building a health history for patients with diverse backgrounds. Your Instructor will assign a case study to you for this Discussion.
To prepare:
Post an explanation of the specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors associated with the patient you were assigned. Explain the issues that you would need to be sensitive to when interacting with the patient, and why. Provide at least five targeted questions you would ask the patient to build his or her health history and to assess his or her health risks.
Note: For this Discussion, you are required to complete your initial post before you will be able to view and respond to your colleagues’ postings. Begin by clicking on the “Post to Discussion Question” link, and then select “Create Thread” to complete your initial post. Remember, once you click on Submit, you cannot delete or edit your own posts, and you cannot post anonymously. Please check your post carefully before clicking on Submit!
Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.
Respond on or before Day 6 on 2 different days to at least two of your colleagues who were assigned a different patient than you. Critique your colleague’s targeted questions, and explain how the patient might interpret these questions. Explain whether any of the questions would apply to your patient, and why.
