Personal Philosophy Statement

My personal nursing philosophy originates from life values and morals acquired during my childhood. These values include respect, integrity, compassion, trustworthiness, and caring. My passion in life is to care for others and impact their lives positively. As an FNP, my philosophy for nursing is based on dignity, person-centered care, and evidence-based practice. These values will contribute to an individual’s holistic well-being and optimal health outcome, irrespective of one’s ethnicity, gender, religion, education attainment, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. My definition of nursing is a profession that prioritizes the needs of others. Nursing is a holistic practice that focuses on meeting all healthcare needs but not administering medication and performing other procedures (Potter et al., 2021). Nursing is a profession that focuses on establishing a good relationship with the patient and understanding and respecting their interests and preferences. A nurse should serve as an advocate and friend to the patients. Nurses should be compassionate, show concern, and listen to patients attentively to achieve desired health outcomes. As a FNP, I will focus on providing compassionate, high-quality, and evidence-based care to all my patients to alleviate suffering, achieve better health, and improve their quality of life and well-being.

FNPs should embrace lifelong learning to improve their competencies and skills. Advancing their knowledge and skills will enable FNPs to meet the healthcare needs of a highly diverse contemporary society. Additionally, FNPs will advance their technological knowledge, enabling them to cope with rapid changes in health information technologies, such as telemedicine (Balestra, 2018). Thus, these nurse practitioners will meet patients’ health needs. Thus, as an FNP, I will focus on improving my competencies regularly by reviewing peer-reviewed journal articles and enrolling in online programs offered by approved nursing institutions. Personal Goals

Short-Term Goals

Goal 1: To improve EKG performance and interpretation skills by adhering to established clinical guidelines. I intend to perform EKG and interpret results independently by the end of this program. These skills will enable me to perform EKG procedures correctly and effectively in my future practice as a FNP.

Goal 2: To improve my skills in pulmonary function tests by working closely with my preceptor during clinical rotation hours. I intend to perform pulmonary function tests independently by the end of the practicum experience. These skills are essential for my future practice as an FNP due to the dramatic increase in respiratory diseases, including lung cancer (Lam et al., 2022). Pulmonary function tests competence will enable me to provide high-quality care to individuals presented to the primary care office with symptoms of respiratory disorders. Goal 3: To improve my skills in wound management care. I will achieve this goal by accompanying my preceptor while dressing wounds during clinical rotation hours. Additionally, I will read clinical guidelines for wound care and apply acquired knowledge during my practicum experience. I intend to perform wound care procedures comfortably and independently by the end of this semester. Consequently, I will provide high-quality and safe wound care to my patients as a FNP in the future.

Long-Term Goals

Goal 1: To pass the ANCC FNP board certification exam and get certified by the end of this semester. I will achieve this goal by attending all classes and interacting with my instructors in classroom and clinical settings to enhance my understanding of all concepts covered in this program. Getting certified is important since it will indicate that I have acquired the skills, knowledge, and competence required to serve as a FNP. Nurse Practitioner Professional Career Planner Discussion

Goal 2: To build a strong professional network in the next six months by interacting with other providers, including NPs from other specialities. NPs should focus on establishing a strong professional network with other healthcare professionals to create connections. Thus, as an FNP, building a professional network will increase my chances of securing employment in a primary care office. A good network will also serve as a platform for career growth and professional development.

Goal 3: To get an advanced degree in the next three years by enrolling in an institution of higher learning. An advanced degree allows NPs to advance their nursing care by concentrating on a specific area. Thus, advancing my education will result in better patient care in my clinical practice as a FNP. Self-Assessment

Self-assessment is essential for masters-prepared nurses, including FNP students. The learners use a self-assessment form to identify their strengths and weaknesses. They identify skills or procedures that one can complete independently as strengths. On the other hand, clinical procedures that an FNP student can only perform with supervision or have never been performed are considered weaknesses. The learners focus on improving their weaknesses based on self-assessment results.

As a FNP student, I used the self-assessment form to review my clinical skills and ability to perform various nursing procedures. The assessment results indicated strength in various performance areas. I am competent in performing chest X-rays and interpreting results. I will use these skills in performing chest X-rays in practice as a FNP, resulting in optimal health outcomes. I can also perform breast and digital rectal exams comfortably and independently. These clinical skills will be helpful in my future practice. Furthermore, I am competent and confident in obtaining vaginal and herpes cultures. I will use these skills in diagnosing properly patients presented to the clinic with symptoms of the reproductive system. Nurse Practitioner Professional Career Planner Discussion

Nonetheless, the assessment results indicated my weak areas. First, I need to improve in performing and interpreting EKG. Secondly, have never performed pulmonary function tests. Lastly, I have never been involved in wound management care. Thus, I will focus on improving this weak area by reviewing clinical practice guidelines or working closely with my preceptor during clinical rotation hours. Improving this weak area will equip me with the skills and competence needed to provide high-quality patient care in my future clinical practice in a primary care setting.
