The nursing profession has changed drastically over time. The roles and responsibilities that nurses take on have increased and become far more complicated. Nurses are managers, leaders, supervisors and have become experts in many areas of care. Every day nurses are faced with the task of improving and strengthening professional leadership within their work environment. Managing good quality and eliminating risk is the major challenge in health care. All members of the team must work together to accomplish outstanding patient care. Budget cuts and nursing shortage in all areas of health care leads to less licensed staff, where use of unlicensed personnel have been used widely, where delegation is not an option, but a necessity. There are many themes that present in literature about delegation. American Nurses Association(ANA) defines delegation as the transfer of responsibility for the performance of a task from one person to another. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing(NCBSN) defines delegation as transferring to a competent individual the authority to perform a selected nursing task in a selected situation. I think delegation is a skill that needs to get proficient. Kleinman and Saccomano(2006) state that the nurse must be taught delegation skills, both in academic and clinical settings. It also mentions that registered nurse can only delegate an act that they own , a nursing act , one they would be responsible for ensuring is completed on a day to day or shift to shift basis. As stated in N6.03 (3) an RN shall delegate tasks commensurate with educational preparation and demonstrated abilities of the person supervised. If an RN knows or should have known that the person supervised is not prepared by education, training or experience to safely perform a delegated nursing act, the RN may not delegate the task. A nurse should only accept those delegated acts that they are competent to perform. Inherent in the refusal to accept a delegated act is the absolute requirement that the nurse who is refusing must communicate their refusal must communicate their refusal to the physician or supervision who is delegating it. There are two levels of supervision that are defined in N6.02(6). In N6.02(6) “Direct supervision means immediately available to continually coordinate,direct and inspect at first hand the practice of another. General supervision means regularly available to coordinate, direct and inspect the practice of another. The level of supervision that is required in any given situation is dependent upon the complexity of the patient’s condition. Underdelegating means, when nurses are in their managerial role, there is a false assumption that delegation may be interpreted as a lack of ability on his or her part to do the job correctly or complete. Another frequent cause is the managers desire to complete the whole job personaly due to a loss of trust in the subordinates.
