Telemedicine also known as virtual healthcare or telehealth has gained popularity in the US healthcare system.
Telemedicine involves providing healthcare to patients over distance.
Particularly, telemedicine became the new norm following COVID-19 outbreak (Mann, 2018).
Telemedicine promotes;
Safely access to healthcare services and
Safe deliver of healthcare services
This PowerPoint presents efficacy of telemedicine in improving access, communication, and healthcare service. Nursing Informatics Presentation Paper
The selected element of telemedicine is Asynchronous.
Asynchronous telemedicine is a “store-and-forward video-conferencing.“
It involves acquiring and transmitting recorded health history to a health practitioner.
The recorded health history is transmitted to medical specialist at a convenient time.
The specialist then assesses the recorded data offline and prescribes treatment.
Asynchronous is the most preferred telemedicine element due to the benefits accrue to healthcare providers and patients. In asynchronous a patient can record health history and forward it later to s healthcare providers. Thus, a patient is allowed to collect detailed health history, which guides the healthcare provider in making an appropriate diagnosis and developing the most effective treatment plan. On the other hand, the healthcare provider makes the assessment offline; hence can seek an expert’s opinion from a specialist within a short duration (Liddy et al., 2019)Nursing Informatics Presentation Paper. Collaboration among healthcare professionals leads to high-quality patient care and positive health outcomes.
Asynchronous should be implemented in the healthcare institution to benefit the organization and its patients. First, asynchronous will allow patients to receive timely specialty care without seeking healthcare services beyond their primary care providers. The patients can share the recorded history with specialists, thus receiving expert’s opinion within a short duration. Additionally, asynchronous allows patients with diverse cultural backgrounds to receive quality care irrespective of one’s cultural background since store-and-forward method overcomes language and cultural barriers. On the other hand, asynchronous allows healthcare providers to assess healthcare history offline, supporting collaboration during care delivery. According to Rosen et al. (2018), collaboration among multidisciplinary team members during care delivery improves the quality of patient care. Thus, healthcare providers offers quality care resulting in job satisfactionNursing Informatics Presentation Paper.
Despite being the most convenient telemedicine component, asynchronous is associated with some issues. The first are of concern involves accuracy of the recorded health history. In some cases, the patient might record wrong health history. In asynchronous telemedicine, healthcare providers do not interact directly with patients, hence cannot confirm if the provided health history is correct. Thus, provision of incorrect health history result in wrong assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, resulting in adverse health outcomes, including admission. The second area of concern involves the privacy of forwarded health-related information. In most cases, primary care providers forward this information to third parties without patient’s consent, thus bleaching the ethical guideline of privacy and disclosure (Langarizadeh et al., 2017)Nursing Informatics Presentation Paper.
The ethical principle of patient autonomy and informed consent is one of major ethical principles that guide delivery of healthcare services. These ethical guidelines gives the patient the right to make all significant decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment procedures. A healthcare provider discloses all significant information regarding treatment procedures and lets the patient to make treatment decision without being interrupted. However, in asynchronous healthcare provider does not interact with the patient; hence making it challenging to obtain informed consent.
The first area of concern involves accuracy of the forwarded health history. The institution should focus on enhancing accuracy of the health history provided by the patient to improve health outcomes. This are can be improved by guiding patients on how to provide correct heath history accompanied with a picture were applicable. The picture of the affected region will help the healthcare provider to confirm the forward health-related information before making any assessment or diagnosis. For instance, a healthcare provider can use the image of an red swelling on the skin in making an appropriate diagnosis. Correct health history is important since it guides healthcare providers in conducing assessment, diagnosis, and developing an appropriate treatment plan.
Secondly, the healthcare institution should focus in addressing issue concerning privacy of patient’s health-related information. This concern can be addressed by reminding healthcare providers about the HIPAA privacy rules regarding patient’s health-related data shared electronically. The HIPAA Privacy Rule holds that patient’s health-related information that is stored electronically should only be shared for the purposes authorized by the law. According to Cohen (2018) a patient should provide a written consent to authorize covered entities to disclose identifiable health information. Thus, legal measures should imposed on healthcare providers who disclose the forwarded health history to other parties without patient’s consent. Nursing Informatics Presentation Paper
Addressing informed consent noncompliance in the healthcare organization will enhance health outcomes of asynchronous telemedicine. In resolving this issues, various components of informed consent will be considered. First, healthcare providers will share a full description of potential therapy procedures with their patients, including consequences of each potential option.
The patient will then be allowed to select a procedure of their choice before, developing the treatment plan.
Asynchronous telemedicine is an evidence-based practice, which results in high-quality care and positive healthcare outcome. According to Davis et al. (2020), telehealth interventions provide healthcare organizations with evidenced-based approach for providing cost-effective, quality, and highly accessible care to their patients. Additionally, telehealth facilitates patient education and timely communication between healthcare provider and the patient. Furthermore, Bashir and Bastola (2018) considered telemedicine as an evidence-based intervention for promoting patient safety through provision of virtual healthcare. Thus, incorporating asynchronous telemedicine in the healthcare institution aligns with guidelines for EBP.
Other healthcare institutions have adopted asynchronous telemedicine due to benefits that the protocol accrues to the healthcare organizations and their patients. In asynchronous telemedicine, patients record health history and send it to healthcare providers who can assess the information offline. Therefore, the healthcare provider is not overworked since he or she assesses health history at the most convenient time. Additionally, healthcare providers’ are not overworked since they tend to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members during care delivery. Additionally, asynchronous telemedicine benefits the patient by facilitating provision of high-quality and cost-effective healthcare services. These healthcare services then results in positive health outcomes Nursing Informatics Presentation Paper.
Implementing asynchronous telemedicine in the institution would benefit healthcare providers and patients. The healthcare providers would be allowed to assess patient’s health history at their convenient time. On the other hand, patients will benefit high-quality and cost-effective healthcare services. Thus, institution’s board of directors should support the implementation of asynchronous telemedicine by providing approval needed before its implemented in the institution and materials and resources required to facilitate successful implementation.
Imagine your healthcare institution (real or imaginary) has elected to implement an element of telemedicine to improve access, communication, and service. You have been appointed to the strategic planning team to develop the protocol for the use of this element in your institution. You are charged with researching other institutions’ protocols, creating a protocol that is evidence-based and supported by research for your institution, and presenting the final product in PowerPoint format to your board of directors.
Your PowerPoint presentation should: Nursing Informatics Presentation Paper
Be 12-20 slides in length, not including a title slide and reference slides. Your title slide should list the name of the protocol, the date, and the name of the assignment. Your reference slides should provide all references in APA format.
Focus on only one of the elements of telemedicine discussed in the course (Hub and Spoke, Asynchronous, Specialty Consults or Enhanced Learning).
Describe the need for the telemedicine element to be implemented, why the institution is implementing the element, and how the implementation will benefit both the institution and the individuals served. (You have license here to create a reasonable backstory for the need and benefits to your imaginary healthcare institution.)
Clearly and concisely present your proposed protocol, including a discussion of any areas of concern or questions regarding it.
Evaluate the need and importance of a protocol addressing this element. Describe how establishing your proposed protocol aligns with evidence-based practice by incorporating information from at least two (2) scholarly articles.
Include analysis of your research on other institutions’ protocols regarding this area.
Contain a summary slide that wraps up the presentation. This should include any next steps and/or suggestions for your institution’s board of directors.
Be professional and visually appealing. Select appropriate background, coloring, and fonts. You may include pictures, charts, or other visuals as appropriate for a professional presentation.
