Walden University’s Nursing program is set to ensure all students succeed. As evidenced by a part of the mission statement, the goals set are to create “diverse nursing professionals into champions of change who will improve health outcomes” (Walden University – Acalog Acmsâ„¢, 2022, para. 1). I felt the desire to be a part of this change, which will hopefully make an impact on enough lives to change the world. Having been a nurse for 16 years, I have vowed to continually work on my professional development. Starting out with an ASN, then BSN, which opened the doors for Wound and Ostomy Certification, I am now on the MSN stage. Here is where I can take my love for wounds and ostomies to the next level by obtaining an advance practice degree to provide thorough, competent, health care to our countries growing, aging population. My goal is to be able to treat the entire patient, meeting their needs for immediate care avoiding emergency room visits and hospital admissions. Many of us are aware of the penalties and according to Kripalani et al. multifaceted approaches to prevent hospitalizations are on the rise. Programs are being created to intervene and treat patients avoiding hospital visits entirely. Information technology, dedicated staff including advanced practice providers are being utilized to their fullest capacity with the hopes of providing excellent patient care in a more affordable environment (Kripalani et al., 2014, para. 17)Nursing Program Networking Opportunities Essay Discussion Paper.

Having an opportunity to experience Walden University’s advanced educational platform to best learn how to assist the diverse patient populations around the world is extremely exciting. I feel that learning to utilize evidence-based practices to assess and treat patients will ensure that my goals of becoming a scholar nurse will be fulfilled. Becoming an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) will foster my becoming a proponent for change. We are all learning that change in society is more than just words, it is action! It’s taking our individual heritages, cultures, statuses, as well as idiosyncrasies and utilizing them to relate, educate, guide, and comfort our neighbors, friends and families.
As a wound and ostomy nurse managing an outpatient wound care center I have learned how valuable networking is. When I was starting out in wound care I was fortunate to have the guidance of a senior certified wound ostomy nurse who quickly learned I was as excited about wound care as she was. She taught me how to utilize networking to my advantage: attending conferences, lunches, and dinners with vendors and most importantly how to access those individuals when our patients needed the services or products offered. According to Kyle Schmidt’s BlogPost about networking, “70-80% of nursing jobs” are obtained via networking avenues (Schmidt, 2012, section 2). This can be advantageous when you are searching for your dream job. In addition, to networking among colleagues it is also invaluable to utilize professional communities that share common interests and goals. I am a member of the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nursing (WOCN) society, as well as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the American Nursing Association (ANA) and the Alabama State Board of Nursing (ASBN). I have been fortunate to meet many individuals and have attempted to implement the tactic of “keywords” on business cards of colleagues as sometimes it is hard to remember so many “new” friends. I am not your traditional student nurse. I started nursing at the age of 15 as a candy striper. Through the years I have seen a tremendous amount of change in the field but my goal has never changed and that is to provide my community with the best care available. I grew up in an underserved community and with limited resources at hand. My goal is to continue to educate myself and to educate my community to empower them to address pertinent disease processes that plague us like HTN DM CKD monies for maintenance vs using the emergency center for maintenance care. I plan to open a low cost Family Practice Center in the community to combat the distance between accessible healthcare and high cost unattainable healthcare There are several grant programs that are avaiable to assist in funding and maintaining a low cost clinic in rural areas (Buppert, 2018, 467). In 2017 when I was looking for a college to pursue my Nurse Practitioners Certification I came across Walden University and would later revisit the website. After a few coworkers completed the program just prior to the pandemic I witnessed the mission statement in progress through these nurses who embodied the teaching and support that Walden University had equipped them with. Creating an inclusive teaching and learning environment where students expand on there existing professional nursing knowledge to improve workplace and healthcare outcomes (Walden University, 2011b). Walden also provides educational approaches that address the complex needs of adult learners (Walden University, 2011a). To me as an older adult learner I will have the support I need to succeed in accomplishing my goals to better serve my community.

Nursing has not always been the glory career that we shine a light on today. In the year of Florence Nightingale it was viewed grung work and very few where interested in the hard labor, but thank goodness for her caring heart. Nurses embody a heart of caring; some are and are not bedside equipped but their presence and talents are demanded in other areas: Law, Informatics, Leadership, Advanced Education, Model Design, etc. I think that the ability to want to effect social change makes you see the big picture in nursing regardless of what arena you chose is necessary. Networking is essential to making any goal a success story no one person achieves that alone. I know that it will take a small village to have my goals achieved and I look forward to the journey of new that I am adding to my resume of friends with expertise in so many fields of nursing. I want my presence to matter and that my time here has made a difference. I have effected change if only in one person that speaks volumes to me.
