APA Assignment

Describe the purpose of applying nursing theory to patient care.

Nursing theory is at the center of nursing practice as each one is developed from scientific evidence and valid data with a focus on creating frameworks and providing various approaches and strategies for patient care. Any nursing theory is about big ideas while ensuring that the nursing profession is unique within the evolving, complex health care field. Regardless of the abstraction or complexity, a nursing theory reflects the phenomenon that is central to the nursing discipline and should be applied by nurses to frame the existence of nursing profession, and frame the thinking and actions of nurses in providing patient care (Butts & Rich, 2018). As a guide, a nursing theory is practical in nature and facilitated communication between nurses and patients, as well as between nurses and other providers who contribute to patient care. In addition, nursing theory helps in guiding the thinking about nursing as it distinguishes nursing care as a separate practice approach from other health related disciplines. This occurs even as nursing theory assists nurses in understanding each patient and the unique needs. Furthermore, nursing theory provides the template to help nurses in providing care that improves patient care outcomes while respecting the patient (McEwen & Wills, 2018). In essence, a nursing theory offers an understanding of the intersection of nursing health, patients and the environment, and it simplifies the ever-evolving and complicated relationship between nursing practice and patient care. Explain why nursing theory is meaningful to current practice.

Nursing theory is meaningful to current practice as it sets nursing practice apart and shaped by its own practices and concepts. In fact, nursing theory frames the distinction for nursing practice. Each nursing theory is crucial to the nursing concept as it offers foundational knowledge of care concepts that enable nurses explain what they do in practice and the reasons for what they do. This is especially important for enabling nurses to articulate the evidence that justifies the methodologies behind nursing practice. Nurses can use the theories to help shape care delivery strategies in ways that align with the range of targeted outcomes. In essence, nursing theory provides a framework that shapes the parameters of nursing practice. Without the nursing theories, current practice would not have a linear focus that points back to what is important in nursing practice (Koutoukidis & Stainton, 2020). Explain how a nursing theory can be applied before planning and providing care in current practice.

Nursing practice is an identifiable discrete body of knowledge and practice that comprises of theories, framework and paradigms. The integration of a nursing theory into practice helps in demonstrating the evolutionary pathways for introducing a paradigm shift in the essence of nursing practice. In fact, nursing theory is used to guide nursing practice as the theory is tested to determine whether or not the proposed nursing actions have the claimed effects. In essence, a nursing theory is tentative, generates testable hypotheses, is generalizable, is parsimonious, organizes facts, and predictive. It guides nursing practice by organizing data, understand and analyzing the data, and making appropriate decisions related to nursing practice. As such, nursing theory organizes nursing actions to present a predictable practice model showing the link between action and outcomes (Smith, 2020).

Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring best reflects my personal view of the essence of nursing and would be helpful for planning and providing care to patients. I perceive nursing as caring with a focus on embracing the positive energy that flows from an integrated spirit, body and mind, and is mutually rewarding to both the nurse and patient. This positions me as a nurse to help the patient health through intentionally and authentic presence that optimizes the ability to heal. In essence, I am sensitive to my patients and adopt a caring attitude that helps in achieving the best outcomes for the patients. The Theory of Human Caring helps me to be the difference in terms of what I say and do, and how I say and do, especially as I live authentically in relationships with patients and other providers, and affirming my humanity (Sitzman & Watson, 2018).
