FIRST DISCUSSION: Share at least 3 items/values/beliefs that are most important to you in your future PMHNP practice. The most important aspects in the surveys that are most important to me in my future practice as a PMHNP are self-disclosure, my desire to nurture others, and experiencing counseling as a client. Self-disclosure: All therapists experience moments when they must determine whether to self-disclose to their clients (Moody et al., 2021). Psychiatry Personal Statement Examples Essay The available research data indicate that in general, self-disclosure of the therapist positively impacts clients through producing an enhanced therapeutic relationship, a willingness to disclose to the therapists, a feeling of being understood, and comfort in the therapy session. Although, declarations about the benefits of a therapist self-disclosure are frequently tempered by warnings about the ineffectiveness of self-disclosure, or even backfire, wen inappropriate, superfluous, or excessive; in situations such as these, the therapist’s self-disclosure may appear incompetent or unprofessional. This can potentially cause the client to feel overwhelmed or misunderstood, causing roles and therapy boundaries to be blurred or even reversed. Essentially, a therapist’s decision about self-disclosure must involve thoughtful consideration of the context, including factors such as the therapeutic alliance, understanding of each individual client’s likely receptiveness towards the disclosure, and the clinical intention behind the disclosure (Moody et al, 2021). Research suggests that when therapists determine whether to self-disclose to clients’ similar psychological problems that they have personally experienced, therapists should think about how long ago those problems occurred. Especially, self-disclosure of issues that occurred in the distant past, which tend to generate more positive perceptions of the therapist than the therapists disclosing more recent or current problems, or no disclosure at all. Desire to nurture others: I have always had the desire to nurture others which ultimately lead me to my career as a nurse. Psychiatry Personal Statement Examples Essay
Nurses play many roles and one be role as a future psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) will be therapists. Therapists can be compared to a nurturing and diligent gardener (Ferentz, 2017). A therapist plant seeds the inspires clients to be curious about their behaviors, feelings, and thoughts, fostering an environment of safety, allowing the re-evaluation of beliefs in a non-shaming, compassionate way. As future therapists, an important contribution we can make is to plant seeds of new possibilities and hope into the therapy process. Regardless of the treatment modality that is employed, the basis of successful treatment is embedded in the condition of the therapeutic relationship (Ferentz, 2017). Psychiatry Personal Statement Examples Essay Approaching clients with compassion, building trust, attunement, and bringing a genuine sense of optimism and hope into the room is vital in the therapist’s alliance with clients. Acknowledging past challenges of clients that they have overcome aids in highlighting the client’s inherent resiliency. Identifying and validating even the smallest positive steps the client has taken can have a cumulative powerful effect and re-instate a feeling of hope. Re-instating a feeling of hope can be accomplished by commonly pausing a session to illuminate a compassionate statement or new insight uttered by the client. Possibly, the most important seeds a therapist can plant are the ones the frequently let the client know that the therapists have faith and hope in the client’s ability to grown and heal. Therapists can encourage clients to lean on and borrow the therapist’s hope until they have their own. With enough nurturance, a seed can spout and grow strong. Experiencing counselling as a client: Mental health practitioners work in an occupation of one-way caring, in which the practitioners are required to demonstrate compassion, patience, and empathy, without the prospect of receiving such care from their clients in return (Posluns & Gall, 2019). To provide effective mental health services, a practitioner must develop a working relationship with their clients that maintains appropriate levels of psychological or emotional involvement, and boundaries, consistently from one client to another. Psychiatry Personal Statement Examples Essay Creating and maintain a working relationship with a client requires a significant amount of effort and energy which increases the risk of negative outcomes including stress, professional impairment, and burnout. Yet, a practitioner may not make self-care a priority. Nevertheless, self-care and tending to one’s own well-being, can be a preventive measure to decrease the risk of negative outcomes, such as burnout. Mental health practitioners’ ethical duty is to provide responsible care, while minimizing harm and maximizing benefits for their clients. Practitioners must first be well themselves, to provide effective care to their clients. Mental health practitioners can greatly benefit from the experience of counseling (Corey, 2021). Many mental health practitioners have personally experienced counseling on several occasions. Research shows the benefits of psychotherapy for mental health professionals as people include positive increments in self-understanding, self-acceptance, and self-care, in addition to reduction of symptoms, and improved personal growth and relationships in general. Research suggest that personal therapy influences the professional work of a mental health practitioner in three ways: (1) by contributing to the practitioners ability to come with ongoing stressors associated with clinical work; (2) as part of a practitioners training, allowing observation of another, possibly more experienced therapists working, and by learning what is helpful and/or not helpful; and (3) by furth enhancing interpersonal skills, which are vital to skillfully practicing therapy. SECOND DISCUSSION: Corey (2020) highlights that one of the most valuable tools the counselor has, is themselves, as a person. The essence of this idea is that being our most authentic self is at the foundation of an effective therapist-client connection. Psychiatry Personal Statement Examples Essay According to Norcross & Lambert (2018) “Multiple and converging sources of evidence indicate that the person of the psychotherapist is inextricably intertwined with the outcome of psychotherapy,†(p. 307). Their ongoing research focuses on a meta-analysis of the therapist-client relationship and how it affects treatment outcomes. The most recent conclusions suggest that the therapeutic relationship between therapist and client is as important as the types of treatments used and that a focus on therapist behaviors is paramount in facilitating this relationship, among the top behaviors is genuineness or authenticity (Norcross & Lambert, 2018). Personally, I value authenticity and genuineness and strongly believe that it is essential for forging meaningful connections in relationships. If I model authenticity as a therapist, it may inspire my clients to reveal more of their true feelings. The second value that spoke to me after doing the attitude exercise is self-awareness. My ability to take a personal inventory and be introspective about my own life and relationships is essential to be an effective counselor. Self-awareness requires ongoing reflection and self-care; it is a way of life, not necessarily an event. My efforts to stay healthy not only models positive behavior, but also helps build healthy boundaries to avoid countertransference with clients. Last, but not least, I value the careful use of humor in therapy. Research by Akimbekov & Razzaque (2021), found that laughter can significantly reduce stress, elevate mood and improve subjective measures of quality of life. Psychiatry Personal Statement Examples Essay Well timed humor can lift the mood and be a therapeutic tool to use once a relationship has been established with the client. The ability of the therapist to read the room and know when to use humor is critical. The therapist has to be careful not to make light of serious matters or use humor as a form of avoidance.
