Hi class. Based on research regarding the psychomotor domain of learning, teaching efforts of faculty can be improved if communities are built with colleagues and if more conversations are initiated related to teaching. If faculty would share their failures and successes that relate to their teaching efforts, the scholarship of teaching would be promoted more effectively and ‘good practices’ could be better analyzed and developed (NLN, 2009). What are some of the abilities that an instructor/educator should possess in order to enhance the psychomotor learning domain of clients, students, co-workers, learners, etc.? Thanks. Dr. Wright

Psychomotor Learning

Psychomotor learning is concerned with development of physical and motor skills. Often, instructors and educators that aim at improving this domain should have certain skills and abilities for them to effectively teach the development of the skills in learners. One of the ways that teachers can employ to teach psychomotor learning is proficiency in skills, which is concerned with effective demonstration of the skills taught. At the same time, there is a need for a clear explanation of the concepts through clear verbal communication, which helps learners to understand the steps and nuances of the physical skills that are being taught.

Further, instructors should observe learners to identify the areas on need of improvement. Mainly, observation skills are needed for enhancement of psychomotor learning and entails understanding individual learning styles and adaptation of teaching methods. Asides from that, there is adaptability, which entails adapting teaching methods to serve the diverse needs of the learners. Also, provision of constructive feedback is needed for improvement (Caruso, 2021). Instructors should offer feedback that is specific, actionable, and encourages learners to refine their skills. Besides, psychomotor skills require continued practice and repetition. Instructors should strive to be patient and understanding and recognize the fact that learners progress at different rates. Asides from that, encouraging psychomotor learning entails building a positive and encouraging learning environment to motivate learners. There is a need to inspire confidence and enthusiasm in the learners. Lastly, instructors should consider building communities with colleagues and foster conversations linked to teaching. Mainly, this includes sharing with each other tips of successes and some of the factors that lead to failure. Subsequently, this helps to ensure continued professional growth and exchange of teaching practices.
