A social factor that could impact the type of groceries purchased in my locality, Newburgh, NY, is socioeconomic status. The level of poverty in this locality is 12.2%, which is higher than the federal 11.6%. This level indicates that several households could struggle to afford the groceries. For instance, a family within this cohort may be unable to afford commodities such as apples at $3.99, soda at $2.39, chips at $4.59 and cookies at $3.99. Households living in poverty may struggle to afford these commodities because they are considered luxuries and would increase their purchasing burden. Another factor that could affect the groceries purchased in this locality is education level, where only 31.4% of individuals above 25 years have university education and higher. This figure is lower compared to the federal rate of 33.7%. Educational achievement has a bidirectional relationship with socioeconomic background. Li et al. (2020) argues that individuals with lower educational achievement are more likely to remain in lower socioeconomic status (SES), and lower SES indicates possibility of poor academic achievement. As such, the individual is likely to experience difficulties in their purchasing power, ultimately affecting the type of groceries they can afford. A CHN could use coalition building as an intervention to help address the issue of food security (Schaffer et al., 2020). To achieve this, the CHN should consider approaching stakeholders such as organisations that produce these food items to offer them at subsidised costs, or establish programs where these organisations provide households living in poverty some of the groceries for free, as part of charity to ensure they can access these food items.
