Assessment is a critical piece of education and should aim to identify whether students have a sound understanding of the subject, which is essential for them to develop into successful clinicians in the future (Mukhtar et al., 2020). Formative assessment is used throughout an instructional period to treat misconceptions, struggles, and learning gaps. Summative assessments evaluate learning, knowledge, proficiency, or success after an instructional period (ISU, 2022). Student Assessment in Teaching And Learning Assignment

Examples of formative assessments: “to learn and practice”

Examples of Summative assessments: “to assess performance”

  • Instructor-created exams
  • Standardized tests
  • Final projects
  • Final essays
  • Final presentations
  • Final reports
  • Final grades (ISU, 2022)

As stated above, while summative assessment serves to determine the learning achieved by the student at the end of the course, formative assessment, on the other hand, forms a part of the developmental or ongoing teaching-learning process by providing guidance and continuous feedback to the students on their performance (Mukhtar et al., 2020). The authors stress that both formative and summative methods are essential assessment tools as they have different advantages. Therefore, they contend that the strategy should be to implement both together to assess skills and knowledge, as it will yield better results (Mukhtar et al., 2020). As educators, we can utilize assessment data to improve learning since student assessment enables educators to measure the effectiveness of their teaching by linking student performance to specific learning objectives. As a result, we can institutionalize effective strategies and practices and revise ineffective ones in our teaching (Fisher, M. R., n.d.).

Hi Ronda; Student Assessment in Teaching And Learning Assignment

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us. Evaluation and assessments in learning are critical elements since they ensure that the educator assesses and determines whether the learner has achieved the target instructions. The learner may use these evaluations to determine the learning abilities and knowledge or skills possessed by the learner concerning the learning objectives targeted (Kuoz et al., 2021). Therefore, in this sense, the educator must determine the purpose of the evaluation and the type and approach for evaluating the skills and knowledge development attained by the learner. In this approach, a formative evaluation determines if the learner has mastered the content covered in the project, discussion, lesson, or course.

The evaluation process forms the basis of implementing teaching or learning opportunities in subsequent sessions and ensures that the learner achieves the desired competency levels. The teacher uses formative evaluation as an approach for determining the effectiveness of the learner or determining the knowledge gaps and opportunities for improvement that the learner may apply to attain optimal results (Kuoz et al., 2021). For instance, an educator may ask several questions during a lesson to determine if the learner understood the concepts or contents covered during the lesson. As an educator, applying this evaluation as part of continuous learning is critical to ensure that the learner achieves the desired learning objectives. On the other hand, a summative evaluation is conducted after the course or the program is completed. Therefore, the assessment determines whether the learner is knowledgeable or competent to proceed to the next level or as an indicator for successful program completion. Therefore, the summative evaluation is a skill or competency oriented that determines the ability of the learner to undertake formal roles and responsibilities for the next program or transform into nursing practice and healthcare service delivery (Arrogante et al., 2022). The educator may use this evaluation to determine the efficiency and ability of the learner to maintain safety and translate theoretical skills into clinical practice.
