INRODUCTION

COPD is a general term to refer to a group of diseases that lead to breathing-related problems and airflow blockages (Dunphy et al., 2019).  It includes conditions like chronic bronchitis and emphysema. COPD makes breathing challenging and it is common since about 6 million people in the United States if America have it (David, 2020).

MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY

The morbidity and mortality global rate of COPD is about 2.7 million deaths in 2000 people (Devine, 2008). Globally, the condition is ranked as the fourth leading cause of death. Additionally, the disease leads to high societal and healthcare costs. Early studies suggest that 2.2 million deaths globally have been caused by COPD and almost 90% of the deaths in people who are under 70 years occur in the middle and low-income nations (Gerayeli et al., 2021). ETIOLOGY

COPD is a condition that occurs when the airways and lungs become more inflamed and damaged. It is often associated with the long-term exposure to human substances like cigarette smoke. Smoking is the main cause of this condition, and it is responsible for 9 out of 10 COPD cases. The harmful chemicals in smoking damages the lining of the airways and lungs and stopping smoking prevents COPD from being worse (Stephenson et al., 2018). Dust and fumes also cause COPD since they may damage the lungs. Examples of these fumes include coal dust, isocyanates, welding fumes, silica dust among others. Air pollution causes COPD and it affects how well the lungs work (Tarke et al., 2017). Genetics also cause COPD and genes make them vulnerable to get this condition. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

The progression of COPD is related to a rise in severity and frequency of the condition, COPD exacerbation. COPD is often linked to impoverished health status and it is life-threatening, especially in patients who have an advanced disease (Øie et al., 2022). In some of the patients who have this prolonged condition, they experience a reverse of its benefits. In COPD, the pathophysiology starts with the damage to the airways and tiny air sacs within the lungs. The symptoms range from coughing with mucus to difficulty breathing and the damage done by his condition is never undone.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTING, PREVENITIVE SERVICES, & TREATMENT PLAN

Diagnostic testing in COPD patients include the lung or pulmonary function tests. They measure the amount if air you can exhale and inhale whether the lungs deliver oxygen to the blood. The patient also undergoes a chest X-Ray and this may show whether she has emphysema, which is the main cause of COPD (Miravitlles & Ribera, 2017). The other is CT scan and it helps detect emphysema and determine how surgery can be done from COPD. The patient also gets an arterial blood gas analysis to show how well the lungs bring oxygen to the blood. The patients also undergo laboratory tests. The clinical preventive services in COPD entail avoiding smoking if one is a smoker, not partaking in smoking as an option, staying healthy, eating a healthy diet, and even conducting breathing exercises (Mackay et al., 2018). The treatment plan for COPD includes taking medications in pill form, inhalers, nebulizers, breathing exercises, incentive spirometer, and oxygen therapy to help make breathing easier, strengthen lung function, prevent further decline, pulmonary rehabilitation to learn about exercise and the pulmonary system care, and even learning how to control breathing. CLINICAL PRESENTATION

The clinical presentations include wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, constant respiratory infections, lack of energy, swelling in the legs, feet and ankles, unintended weight loss, and a chronic cough that may produce sputum, or be yellow, white, clear, and greenish (Mackay et al., 2018)
