The FASD Respect Act Essay Discussion Paper

When politics and medical science intersect, there can be much debate. Sometimes anecdotes or hearsay are misused as evidence to support a particular point. Despite these and other challenges, however, evidence-based approaches are increasingly used to inform health policy decision-making regarding causes of disease, intervention strategies, and issues impacting society. One example is the introduction of childhood vaccinations and the use of evidence-based arguments surrounding their safety. The FASD Respect Act (S. 2238)

The FASD Respect Act also referred to as Advancing FASD Research, Services, and Prevention Act of 2021, was introduced in the Senate by Senator Lisa Murkowski on 06/24/2021. The bill has currently been read twice and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (Congressional Research Service, 2021). The bill authorizes programs and funding to aid individuals and families affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). It instructs the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, the National Institutes of Health, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct and coordinate research, surveillance, and related activities to diagnose, prevent, and treat FASD. Additionally, the bill creates a number of grant programs to assist FASD coalitions and create systems of care, offer services to those affected by FASD and other conditions linked to prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), to identify and put into practice the best methods for educating kids with FASD, and to create centers of excellence to develop the necessary skills for preventing, treating, and attending to the needs of those with FASD (Congressional Research Service, 2021)The FASD Respect Act Essay Discussion Paper.

FASDs are collection of disorders that can develop in a newborn who has been exposed to alcohol. Most PAE) victims do not have any overt physical symptoms but have internal damage that affects how their heart, kidneys, brain, and other bodily systems develop(Lange et al., 2017). The most common known cause of neurodevelopmental disabilities is PAE, and people with FASD struggle with serious social, cognitive, and emotional problems for the rest of their lives. According to recent prevalence research, up to 1 in 20 first graders in the U.S. were discovered to have FASD, and one in four juvenile offenders in juvenile corrections suffer from FASD (Lange et al., 2017)The FASD Respect Act Essay Discussion Paper.

Although there is no cure for FASD, findings of the research indicate that early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development (Wilhoit et al., 2017). I, therefore, believe there is an evidence base to support the proposed policy.
