LEADERSHIP THEORIES IN PRACTICE

A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.

However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations. Leadership Theories in Practice

From the research I conducted, I found that the transformational leadership theory and style was crucial in influencing positive outcomes the nursing team and the patient. According to an article by Ystaas et al. (2023), the transformational leadership approach brings staff together as its common goal is to tend to patient with compassionate care. This approach focuses on the behaviors and attributes of leader, and how they seek to empower and motivate the team members towards achieving a common goal. The leader applies open communication, inspires, and promotes positive change among the team members. As such, the approach allows nurses to form stronger connections with patients as they are inspired.

A leader I have observe use this leadership theory is my nurse preceptor during my practicum sessions as I did my nursing degree. My preceptor was inspirational and motivational to our team, always encouraging us to focus on patient-centered care. She was also keen on open communication, and would invite all team members for open dialogue during meetings to share their views and experiences. This approach was profound as it highlights the leader-member exchange theory as Donohue-Porter et al. (2019) explore. This approach enabled the team members, myself included, be proactive in our roles as we felt included and considered in decision-making. This skill was effective because it helped strengthen bonds among the nursing team members. For instance, I noticed that there was less conflict, the nurses loved our preceptor, and never had a negative towards their leadership. If anything, I notice that nearly everyone spoke highly of our leader, and used adjectives such as “considerate”, “understanding”, “inspiring”, and “fair” to describe her. In her application of this leadership theory, the leader’s approach in being inclusive and motivational towards the nursing team led to increased nurse satisfaction.
