The Power of Interpersonal Communication Skill Assignment

The Lakeland Medical Clinic has recently opened its doors to serve area residents and has seen a decrease in patient volume. As a result of this drop, a survey was conducted among employees at the clinic which indicates that 75% of the staff have concerns about diversity issues, workplace incivility, and poor work-life balance. With this information in hand, senior leadership has asked the clinic director to provide a response and has appointed me to assemble a team to address the diversity issue. It is my responsibility to form a committee, lead the group and collaborate in order to maximize team effectiveness. Consequently, the clinic director has asked me to provide a written document that includes my chosen leader that exemplifies appropriate leadership skills and approach, as well as my role, communication strategy and tactics, and ideas on collaboration. In this letter, I will explore the qualities of successful leadership and how I will lead the group and facilitate collaboration to maximize team effectiveness in order to meet the clinic’s goals. The healthcare environment of today is made up of a large variety of individuals of all backgrounds and perspectives. In order to provide the most suitable and effective care possible, it is crucial to create an atmosphere of acceptance and respect for diverse identities (Febrianita & Hardjati, 2019). At Lakeland Clinic, steps have been taken to address diversity concerns including: training sessions with focuses on cultural competence for caregivers, building a diverse staff of professionals and administrators, and providing resources for patients to connect with counselors and learn about health disparities in the local community. The aim is to ensure that the highest quality of care is provided to all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds and identities (McDonald et al., 2021).

The Lakeland Clinic is uniquely positioned to proactively address the issues of diversity for their staff, patients and the community. According to The Joint Commission, a leader in health care accreditation, health care organizations must work to create an environment that respects and values the diversity of individuals (The Joint Commission, n.d). To achieve this, Lakeland Clinic should create and implement an action plan for diversity and inclusion. The plan should include addressing the language barriers for patients and staff, cultural competency training for employees and fostering a climate of acceptance and respect (Sadau et al., 2019). Additionally, Lakeland Clinic should form a diversity committee that is responsible for understanding, addressing and monitoring the diversity services and needs of their patients, community, and staff. By doing this, Lakeland Clinic can ensure that their staff and patients feel comfortable, supported and respected regardless of their identity or backgrounds. Studies have shown that a diverse workforce leads to higher innovation and productivity, as well as improved problem solving. To ensure an equitable and understanding work environment, many organizations have invested in resources to address their diversity concerns. Such resources may include organizational development and planning, global human resources management, diversity management, process innovation, and staying knowledgeable about industry trends (SHRM, n.d). By utilizing these resources, a company can ensure that they are creating and sustaining a positive and equitable workforce.

At our healthcare facility, there is an open and inclusive environment that encourages respect and value for people from all walks of life, regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic status. This eliminates any potential issues related to diversity, workplace incivility, and poor work-life balance. We have found that fostering an attitude of respect makes for a more productive and successful workplace. Additionally, we have implemented flexible working hours and have a strong culture of work-life balance (U.S. Department of Labor, 2018). This allows us to balance our professional and personal commitments and to enjoy our lives outside of work. In this way, we remain productive, while also supporting the well-being of each individual and preserving their quality of life. The Power of Interpersonal Communication Skill Assignment

I consider my leadership style to be democratic. As a democratic leader, I believe in involving team members in the decision-making process and fostering open communication. This leadership style is in contrast to an autocratic leader who makes decisions independently and does not solicit input from team members. In comparing my democratic leadership style to an autocratic leadership style, there are several key differences to consider. One key difference is the way decisions are made. As a democratic leader, I believe in involving team members in the decision-making process and seeking input from all team members. This allows for a greater sense of ownership and buy-in from team members, as they feel their voices are being heard and their ideas are being considered (Akparep et al., 2019). In contrast, an autocratic leader makes decisions independently and does not seek input from team members. This can lead to a lack of engagement and motivation among team members, as they may feel their ideas and perspectives are not valued (Akparep et al., 2019). Another difference is the level of communication and collaboration that occurs within the team. As a democratic leader, I value open communication and encourage team members to share their ideas and perspectives. This fosters a sense of trust and respect within the team and can lead to more effective problem-solving and decision-making. An autocratic leader, on the other hand, may have a more hierarchical approach to communication and may not encourage open dialogue or collaboration among team members. The Power of Interpersonal Communication Skill Assignment

As a democratic leader, I believe in involving my team members in decision making and actively listening to their ideas and concerns. I also strive to create an open and inclusive environment where all team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and perspectives. In contrast, my nurse manager Rachel Miles, who is an autocratic leader, often makes schedule changes without consulting her staff and is unapproachable, making it difficult for staff to voice their concerns. This can lead to a lack of trust and engagement from the staff, which can negatively impact the overall performance and productivity of the team (Akparep et al., 2019).

One specific example of my leadership style as a democratic leader is when I was appointed to lead the diversity committee at Lakeland Clinic. Instead of implementing a plan on my own, I formed a team of diverse individuals and actively sought out input and ideas from each member. I also regularly communicated updates and progress to the entire team and made sure to address any concerns that were brought up. In contrast, Rachel’s style is exemplified by her strict policies on punctuality and her tendency to make unilateral decisions without involving her staff. This approach can create a hostile work environment and can lead to low morale among the staff (Akparep et al., 2019). The Power of Interpersonal Communication Skill Assignment

In addition to fostering collaboration and inclusivity within my team, I also prioritize clear and consistent communication. This helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that team members feel informed and involved in the decision-making process. Rachel, on the other hand, is known for not keeping her staff informed about schedule changes, which can lead to confusion and resentment.

It is clear that the issue of workplace diversity is a pressing one that must be addressed at the Lakeland Medical Clinic. In order to succeed in addressing this issue, it is essential for the team leading the effort to demonstrate leadership, creative problem solving, and collaboration. In order to meet these goals, the leader must have an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of their chosen leadership style, as well as an understanding of the communication technologies and practices that can be used to facilitate collaboration among members of a team. By demonstrating leadership, making use of current trends and practices, and focusing on goals, the team designated with addressing this issue can work together to tackle the problem of workplace diversity and achieve a positive outcome for the organization, its employees, and the community.
