Nurse Retention
As a nurse leader, I would retain my nurses by creating a positive working environment, helping nurses achieve a work-life balance, offering them opportunities for career advancement, rewarding efforts, ensuring close communication, and addressing their stress and burnout issues (de Vries et al., 2023). Creating a positive environment would involve making them feel valued and giving them meaningful recognition so that they function fully within their abilities. I would negotiate with top management to improve nurse-to-patient ratios by recruiting additional nurses to minimize burnout. I would allocate my nurse’ duties and provide rest periods to ensure they are rejuvenated while working (de Vries et al., 2023). Since busy work shifts, social life, and other stressors might cause burnout; I would keep communication open with nurses by encouraging them to communicate openly with their supervisors or managers to ensure they feel valued and not isolated. Nurse Recruitment
I would commence a nurse recruitment process by advertising the vacancies on the hospital website, website advertisements, and online platforms such as the hospital’s LinkedIn account. The adverts would describe the expected qualifications, responsibilities, and roles. After attracting the potential recruits, I would work with the recruitment team to screen applications, make a shortlist, interview applicants, choose the most appropriate nurses, offer them employment or the job, conduct introduction and induction and deploy them into specific units (Newton et al., 2015).
The Future of the Nursing Workforce
The nursing workforce continues to grow even if nurses quit due to retirement, lack of satisfaction, or other reasons. I see a healthy nursing workforce with higher qualifications and skills to deliver the highest quality of care. In the next 50 years, the nursing workforce will be extremely large to quench the nurse shortage, with all nurses (100%) having completed a bachelor’s degree level and most (more than 50%) with postgraduate. I see better staffing levels that would match the current WHO requirements. With the aid of technology, I think that nurses in the next 50 years will use more technology than the hands-on performance of procedures to provide higher-quality care. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (as cited in American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2019), over 200,000 new RNs will be needed each year through 2026 to replace nurses who retire and to fill new positions. National Council of State Boards of Nursing and The Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers (as cited in American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2019) reported that about 51% of today’s RNs are 50 years old or older.
