Reflections on the Pro-Life Movement and the Religious Right in the Abortion Debate

Following the delivery of the readings from this week, especially that of Davis’s (365-368) article on the Pro-Life Movement and Balmer’s (2) paper on the stance of the religious right on the national abortion debate, I am challenged to think through a thoughtful perspective in the matter of the national abortion debate. By illustrating the pivotal role of the Pro-Life Movement in campaigning to defend black women and their infants, the reading points the way for recognition of this crucial work. It mentions one’s historical targeting the black communities by organizations like Planned Parenthood and stresses the reproduction of abortion toll on black women. Davis’s (365-368) article highlights the necessity of having options against abortion as well as helping the populations of those who are prone to abortion and corresponds with a position of defender of life that employs the well-being of both mothers and unborn babies. Rather, the contestation of what seems to be the familiar passages related to the Religious Right’s perspective on the issue is what Balmer’s (2) work focuses on. The reading argues that, at first, religious conservatism’s mobilization was largely fueled by opponents’ efforts to abolish a racially segregated institution, while they pretended to stand for the sanctity of life. It provides an opportunity for a critical assessment of the world of interactions among religion, politics and social movements concerning abortion in building attitudes in society. My suggestion is to make changes to my policy of abortion to which race, religion and reproductive rights come first. I strongly support the policies that protect the rights of unborn babies, which aim at tackling poverty, limiting access to healthcare, and broadening the avenues for health services. Personally, the way I explain it is an approach founded on the interaction of all life’s components, giving more importance to the dignity, well-being, and respect of each, which could lead to solutions preserving rights, treating all human beings as equals, and guaranteeing the lives of everyone.
