In recent years, nursing has gradually become more complex, largely due to advances in therapies, and technology. Advances in technology and expanded interventional techniques have widened competency requirements for nurses. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the scope of my future role as a nurse leader working at an advanced level and the role of professional nursing organizations in influencing advanced nursing.

My future role as a clinical nurse educator will include teaching nurses working in cardiovascular intensive care unit the unit the knowledge and skills they need to safely provide the highest-quality care to patients. Also, I will develop and offer services related to professional development continuing education, and orientation of cardiovascular intensive care nurses. As indicated by Gcawu and Rooyen (2022), the clinical teaching role of the nurse educator include support, guidance, facilitation, and stimulation of learning in a variety of practice settings, including clinics, hospitals, and other primary healthcare settings. The nurse educator has the primary responsibility of conveying theoretical knowledge to nursing students in clinical practice, therefore ensuring theory is Integrated into practice. My other role will include collaborating with staff and managers to assess the competencies and learning needs of clinical staff and serving as a mentor/consultant for nurses in areas of professional development and clinical practice. If it is established that there is a gap in practice, skills, or knowledge, clinical nurse educators would play the role of developing an educational training plan to close the gap. The education or training might be delivered by the clinical nurse educator, or in collaboration with a content expert to deliver training/ education, In this scenario, the clinical nurse educator plays the crucial role of identifying a knowledge gap, providing education as appropriate, and ensuring there is effective retention if information by nurses.
A bachelor’s degree is the minimum education requirement for a clinical nurse educator, but a Master’s of science in nursing with an educational specialization is recommended, together with leadership skills essential to teach other nurses. According to Gillespie (2020) to work in a clinical department at a hospital as a nurse educator, one might only be needed to have a BSN.. However, when transitioning from the role of a clinical nurse to the role of a clinical nurse educator, the nurse educator is required to have competency in teaching as well as nursing practice. Advanced education in learning and teaching methods and theories better prepares a clinical nurse to transition to a clinical nurse educator.
The clinical nurse educators obtain certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s registered nurse to board certification in nursing professional development. Gillespie (2020) posits that the requirements for this certification is two years of experience in the role of an educator and also a specific number of hours of pertinent continuing education hours. Clinical nurse educators might also obtain certification in their specialty area of practice such as certified critical care nurse. After obtaining specialty certification, the advanced practice nurse is required to maintain the specialty certification and it could include a retake of the certification examination, a certain number of working hours in the specialty, or continuing education hours.

The American Nurses Association (ANA), the National League for Nursing (NLN), and the Association of Nursing Professional Development (ADNP) are nursing organizations most influential in advancing advanced nursing. According to Vana and Tazbir (2021), the ANA is the biggest association of registered nurses in the US and it represents the interest of the country’s over four million registered nurses via its fifty constituent state affiliates. The most important goal of ANA is assuring quality, safe care for all. ANA represents nurses from all levels of nursing education, all work settings, and all specialties.
The NLN is a nursing organization whose focus is excellence in nursing education. Membership in the organization is mainly composed of nurse educators and schools of nursing. The NLN holds numerous meetings yearly and offers certification and continuing education for nurse educators. The ADNP is the primary professional association for clinical nurse educators. The association offers literature and resources that are specific about the way to be an educator and an educator’s practice (Gillespie, 2020). I would like to join ANDP because its goals and mission align with my worldview and philosophy of nursing. My mission is to provide safe and quality patient and ensuring nurses have the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver provide quality care Membership in the ANDP can enable me to network with other nurses, have continuing professional educational opportunities through conferences and meetings, and be informed of current issues affecting my specialty. As indicated by Callicutt and Walker (2020) from addressing routine organization obligations to pandemic education, the ANDP continues to be a significant source of information for its members. ANDP convenes annual conferences. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ADNP hosted its first annual conference to offer key content and reenergize its membership. It offered a live networking session, asynchronous and synchronous learning, and nursing professional development (NPD) focused contact hours. Throughout 2020, the ANDP offered monthly educational sessions through webinars and offered members resources to help them in NPD. These webinars offered a wide range of topics that assisted with daily roles of the NDP practitioner.
An evolving issue that is most likely to affect my scope of practice or role in the next few years
The shortage of staff nurses is an evolving issue most likely to affect my role as a clinical nurse educator in the cardiovascular ICU. It is expected that the shortage of nurses will get worse within the next few years as baby boomers retire. According to Vozzella and Hehman (2023) since the early 1990s, the US has experienced periodic shortagess of nurses as particular technological, economic, or sociopolitical forces increase the demand for nursing workforce. The present nursing shortage, nevertheless, also involves a dwindling supply of registered nurses as the demand for nursing services continues increasing, resulting in an ever-widening deficit in nurse labor. Researchers estimate that as a result of an aging baby boomer generation and the increasing prevalence of chronic medical conditions, utilization of hospital services will increase by 240 percent by 2025.
The nursing shortage threatens both nurses and patients and the healthcare system as a whole. Understaffing threatens patient safety and makes nurses experience heavy workloads and burnout and subsequently leave the profession. Nurse turnover is a contributing factor to nursing shortage in the United States. As a clinical nurse educator, it will be my duty to collaborate with leaders to ensure nurse retention by mentoring both novice and experienced nurses and providing them with the knowledge and skills to make them confident in providing care to patients. According to Baudoin et al. (2022), in 2020, the rate of turnover for nurses in acute care settings was 19.5 percent on average with new graduate nurses turnover being as high as 23.9 percent and 17 percent in intensive care units.
There is no further training needed to enter practice in the intensive care environment for new graduate nursess, although there is high acuity of patients and high-level expectations which lead to emotional stress for these nurses New graduate nurse do not have confidence and they feel uncomfortable when beginning their new positions. Competence makes new graduate nurses feel confident as they deal with stressors encountered in the intensive care setting. The effect of theory to practice gap has been investigated for new graduate nurses in the critical care setting.
