My nursing specialty choice within the program includes Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). PMHNPs assist patients experiencing mental health diseases and mental health including substance abuse problems, mood disorders, postpartum depression, PTSD, depression and anxiety. PMHNPs have the experience and education to handle the mental health issues of patients from all age groups. The PMHNPs qualify to diagnose patients suffering from eating disorders, depression, and anxiety and develop a treatment plan (Western Governors University, 2023). Regis College (2023) states that PMHNPs work in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals to develop therapies and prescribe drugs to enhance patients’ mental health.  In addition, they assess the progress of patients throughout their lives and offer education and support to communities and families. I have experienced different challenges when choosing the specialty because of the stigma associated with the specialty. The nursing profession perceives PMHNP as a less desirable choice compared to other nursing specialties. In addition, the public misconception of mental health nursing is dangerous and the nurses being unaware of what the mental health professionals do made me doubt if PMHNP is an appropriate specialty. However, my decision to choose PMHNPs was impacted by my experience with mental health within our family. My sister suffers from anxiety and depression which affects her daily life. In addition, my grandmother suffered from dementia which also impacted her daily life. In addition, I have experienced friends struggling with substance abuse and depression. The experiences inspired me to work as a PMHNP so that I assist individuals affected by mental health issues and assist them in living a normal life. I wish to join the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, a membership agency committed to PMHNP nurses. APNA (2023) highlights that the PMHNPs access support, resources and education important for mental health care. I will join the student membership by showing the evidence of my full-time student and providing the name of the nursing program (PMHNPs). I will also fill out the form and make a payment of 25 US dollars. The membership allows registered nurses who are students to vote.
