WK1 Assign – NURS 6002 Week 3 | Part 3

The Assignment:

In this Assignment, you will continue developing your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan by appending the original document you began in the previous Assignment to develop the second component—academic resources and strategies. To accomplish this:WK1 Assign – NURS 6002 Week 3 | Part 3

Identify and describe at least three academic resources or strategies that can be applied to the MSN program

Identify and describe at least three professional resources that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or your specialty in particular

Explain how you intend to use these resources, and how they might benefit you academically and professionally.

Discussion

Overview: As a community of practice, your task for this week is to collaborate with professionals across the health care system. With your community of practice, in the Discussion, find a gap in care or social determinant that often results in poor health care outcomes. You will begin to take the lead in advocating for and collaborating with others to improve the health care outcomes for populations at risk.

Practicum Discussion: During this week, you will identify a population at risk in your community. This population will be the basis for your Practicum Discussions and your individual presentations over the next 6 weeks, as well as the focus of your final PowerPoint presentation in Week 6. To review, a population is a group of individuals who share a common environmental or personal characteristic, such as obese individuals who are at risk for diabetes or cardiovascular disease (populations at risk) or those individuals who are otherwise healthy and could stay healthy if they do not develop risky behaviors (populations of interest). An example of this is teenagers who don’t yet smoke but might consider it due to peer pressure (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). Some of the topics you might consider are vaccination compliance, obesity rates among children and adults, teenage pregnancy, or infectious diseases such as Norwalk virus, genital warts, or sexually transmitted diseases/infections. You might look also at emerging public health problems such as Chagas or the Zika virus. Some of the places you might consider looking for information to substantiate and support your ideas about populations at risk in your communities are your local health department, the CDC, and the many evidence-based websites that the CDC supports, such as the CDC Wonder (http://wonder.cdc.gov/). You may also review the work of other community groups that focus on improving health care outcomes for your community. You should begin to support your selection of population and ideas about their health care problems through the use of health data and scholarly literature.

Please address the following points in your Practicum Discussion:

Briefly describe your community and then describe your practice setting.WK1 Assign – NURS 6002 Week 3 | Part 3

What are the determinants of health in your community? (https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/about/foundation-health-measures/Determinants-of-Health)

What are the most prevalent health problems in your community or in your practice?

Choose a population at risk and describe the health problem specific to that population. Remember that you will have to define the population’s age, culture, religious beliefs, foods, and traditions eventually as your project progresses.

Please I would like the topic to be on diabetes

Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics (The Connection between Academic and Professional Integrity)

Professional values are important in the healthcare setting. However, these are not always practiced. Advanced nursing education provides a fundamental platform to highlight the importance of professional and academic values. Students are taught how to recommend solutions for change, academic questions or concerns by examples. Each week’s assignments require communication in discussion groups. I find it remarkably interesting to read the discussion postings. The purpose of this paper is to address the connection between academic and professional integrity within the Academic Success and Professional Development Plan. This is aimed at stating the association between academic integrity and academic writing in addition to professional practices and scholarly ethics. Thereafter, writer would address how the use of Grammarly and SafeAssign tools can assist in ensuring this ethical scholarly writing is achieved. As an advanced practice nurse, the writer plans to practice this professional and ethical behavior which would continue to improve as writer gets through the rest of this program and beyond.

Relationship between Academic Integrity and Writing

The American Nurses Association (ANA, 2010) outlines the professional code of conduct for nursing and health care workers. A level of accountability is expected of every professional nurse in clinical practice. Nurses and healthcare professionals are responsible for their own behavior in the workplace and community. Academic integrity and professional standards of practice support safe patient outcomes. Critical thinking and nursing judgement grow professionally with increasing use of evidenced-based practice (EBP). This starts as a student with the practice or producing ethical scholarly writings and citations that have integrity. The instructor is amazingly responsive to student needs. This is something that is greatly appreciated. This kind of faculty support is necessary for weekly growth and continued studies. I thrive in a trustful relationship!            Many different viewpoints are shared that I have not always necessarily considered. In the part 3 assignment, the importance of understanding how to communicate with network members is further explored. Fellow students appear appreciative when I respond to their posting. This is something that is very encouraging. Boykins & Gilmore (2012) explain that online learning is the new wave of learning that is flexible and suitable for many who are working. Students can learn and strengthen their knowledge and skills at Walden University (Walden, 2020).

Relationship between Professional Practices and Scholarly Ethics

Maintaining integrity, professional practices and scholarly ethics is a graduate’s student baseline. Learning cannot be achieved by submitting work stolen from others because practices have changed. Readers are offered the opportunity to learn from a different perspective when reliable resources are published and used. It is important, therefore, to attribute sources correctly to their rightful owners.

Grammarly, SafeAssign, and Paraphrasing

I find that the instructors from Walden University post useful tools to support student success. This is very encouraging. The program is really designed to assist students in becoming better writers. Grammarly is a resource to assist with citation and checking for plagiarism. Safe Assign will validate authentic work by comparing submitted work to a repository of previously submitted student work. Similarities will be flagged this way. The topics are shared amongst the class and similar references are noted. Walden also sites its sources and leads by example (Walden University, 2020). Paraphrasing as a tool helps students to find alternative ways to expressing someone else’s thoughts without using their exact words.WK1 Assign – NURS 6002 Week 3 | Part 3

Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Upholding ethical boundaries at work is one way to ensure integrity at work. In a union labor and management partnership environment, employees may seek the smallest information to strategically discredit one’s value. This is especially experienced when the employee has been coached regarding workplace behavior such as clocking in late, eating at the desk and patient care complaints. Although sharing personal pictures of family, events, and concerns are usually sincere, I have found that the less information shared the better. Proactively avoiding ethical conflicts can easily be achieved by avoiding discussing religion, politics, and personal preferences. Being an effective leader, a worthwhile peer, or just a good employee is possible through actively listening to others and practicing active teamwork.

Maintaining Integrity and Ethics of Academic Work

Research studies indicate that there are several behaviors one can display which symbolize integrity and academic work ethics as a student (ANA, 2010). The Oxford English Dictionary defines ethics as “The moral principles governing or influencing conduct.”  Dishonesty allows room for colleagues not to trust our judgements and behaviors. This in turn damages our professional integrity which can hinder our career progression. In most cases, when a student nurse shows academic dishonesty or lack of integrity, they will transfer this behavior to their professional practice. That in itself is a dangerous prospect.

Maintaining Integrity and Ethics of Professional Work

During my years of nursing, I have experienced platforms where leaders ask for your opinion without really intending to appreciate your approach or choice of words. This ruins the intended actions and perhaps the only opportunity to advocate for change. Body language can easily be misinterpreted by others as well. Culturally and ethically people express emotions differently. We can embrace others with the understanding that not everyone in the workplace may accept advanced learners. According to Institute of Medicine (IOM, 2011), it released the report titled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health and encouraged nurses to complete an advanced degree to make themselves better.  Conclusion

In Conclusion, fundamental values of trust, respect, fairness, and accountability are important to the growth of social change and improvement of patient care. Academic and professional integrity are combining these necessary values for nurses. It is a student’s responsibility to follow the policies in academic guidelines. Graduate students can strengthen and grow behaviors at Walden University by asking questions, utilizing resources, and engaging in professional networking.
