Workplace Environment Assessment Assignment

Greetings Professor and Class,
Workplace Environment Assessment
The definition of civility means to be formal with politeness, to be courteous with speaking to others. Today in Memphis, Tennessee, Campbell Clinic experienced the physical and mental loss of a prominent Orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Benjamin Mauck was known as one of the most gentle spirits in our healthcare community. The patient had been harassing the triage nurse about getting a refill on pain medication all week, on this particular day, Dr. Mauck decided to work the patient in to his busy schedule for a follow up appointment, while in the exam room, Dr. Mauck informed the patient that he would write only a certain prescription for the patient’s pain level, it was stated the doctor spoke to the patient with calmness in his voice when he said no to the patient’s demands but the patient shot the doctor in the exam room and ran out. He was caught within 10 minutes of the shooting because the police just happened to be next door. The results of an angry drug seeking patient the would not take no for an answer cost the doctor his life and has placed fear in the community of healthcare at this time. Memphis, Tennessee is known to be one of the most dangerous cities to live in for crime. With that being said, no one is safe no matter what profession you are in. Workplace Environment Assessment Assignment
As a nurse of 23 years, I began my career in a work environment that fluctuated with hostility known as the Emergency Room of The Med Hospital, number one trauma center in Memphis, in the south for that matter. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Our clientele consist of the younger generation of people with no insurance but all the problems in the world because of no community involvement with provider visits. Working in an ER is already a stressful environment. There is always a staffing issue at the beginning of every shift. More patients then nurses and doctors noted, stretchers are always lined up in the hallway, our ER docs began treating patients while on the stretchers. The treatment process begins and ends sometimes right there in the hallway, charge nurse are appointing staff nurses to hurry up and began treatment and discharge process all in one moment. the clientele be underserved and unable to make the right decisions for healthcare. Treat them and street them was our motto. As a new nurse trying to keep up with the fast pace of an ER flow, it is important for the nurse to keep a level head, use his or her critical thinking skills and be polite when speaking to patients and colleagues at all times, customer service is the most important part of patient care. We may not always remember a person’s name, but we will remember how they made us feel. I wanted to provide the best customer service to may patients because I felt like it was a privilege to take care of them, I always wanted to be one of the best coworkers noted because if someone was behind and I was the float nurse, I am designated to float from station to station asking if they need anything like lab work or EKGs or med pass, what ever it took to facilitate a safe discharge, was the ultimate goal. Sometimes it did not work that way and the settlement would require the interventions of the charge nurse if not the nurse manager. Workplace Environment Assessment Assignment
Addressing Incivility in the workplace
Good leadership was always a solution to the problem. As professionals we are taught to maintain a level of dignity and respect in all work environments. Never to air dirty laundry in front of the patients or at the nursing work station for others to hear and see. If I felt disrespected by the charge nurse or another nurse, I would wait until the proper moment and later address the issue in a private setting or if no resolution noted then in front of a nursing manager. I always wanted a witness due to the nature of any work situation because I loved my job and sometimes, I experienced wanting to speak back when a patient may call you out your name or a coworker yells at you because you not moving fast enough or at their pace. I was taught haste makes waste in any situation. A good nursing leader must be a listener as well as referee. There was always his side, her side and the truth to all situations but to me, safety was the ultimate goal. If I encountered a situation that involved a manager and required upper management then creating an email of concern is another form of correcting an uncivil moment. The chain of command is the only way to address incivility in a workplace environment with a paper trail of documentation and journaling dates and times when a patterned behavior is recognized and must be addressed. Violence is never the way. Especially gun violence. Workplace Environment Assessment Assignment
