It’s easy to recognize the impact on local communities when you examine their achievements. The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) seeks to protect present and future generation’s from the health, environmental and economic consequences of tobacco exposure, in the form of a treaty. It is a constructed set of standards that states the dangers of tobacco and limiting its use. It takes no more than a review of the American Lung Association’s 2019 report to understand what effects tobacco has on us at a local community level. The report, State of Tobacco Control, states that North Carolina received failing grades for its efforts to reduce and prevent tobacco use. Tobacco stands as the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States, costing 480,000 lives every year. This makes FCTC one lifeline in every local community. The International Health Regulations (IHR) spearheads public health agency’s response to the international spread of disease. It is the only international legal treaty with the responsibility of empowering the World Health Organization (WHO) to act as the main global surveillance system. It outlines roles and responsibilities in preparing for and responding to health emergencies. The information and guidance we have from the WHO during the Covid Pandemic has empowered us to navigate the largest pandemic in 100 years. In the local community of Greensboro-High Point metropolitan area a total of 174,778 COVID-19 cases have been reported to date. With 1 million deaths in the United States it is safe to say there is no local community untouched by this pandemic or the CDC’s guidelines to help minimize the morbidity and mortality of disease.
