1. Describe your personal worldview, including the religious, spiritual, and cultural elements that you think most influence your personal philosophy of practice and attitude towards patient care.

A worldview is the framework by which an individual lives and makes sense of the world around himself/herself. My worldview offers me insight into reality as it pertains to my environment, thus helping me to make sense of life. It is especially focused on interpreting morality and ethics by incorporating concepts from cultural, religious and spiritual awareness to present a consistent, meaningful and unified understanding of life’s challenges and opportunities (Dockery & Wax, 2019). I am a Christian who regularly attends church and subscribes to the Christian principles as presented in the Bible. I consider the Bible as a divine book written by humans under the instructions of God. Through observing the principles presented in the Bible, I am essentially following God’s word. I rely on the Bible to make decisions in my life, to include decisions about morality and ethics. I am keen to observe the Christian principles so as to remain true to my faith and live a life that I can be proud of and answerable to God on the day of judgement. The Theory of Human Caring that was introduced by Jean Watson is best aligned with my personal philosophy. My personal philosophy focuses on caring and protecting others from harm. The theory of human caring similarly presents caring as the foundation for delivering efficient and effective nursing care. Every nurse must consistently exhibit caring, to include concern and kindness, within the professional practice environment when engaging patients and family. As a Christian and nurse, my professional nursing practice and approaches to care are reinforced by the ten curative factors presented in Watson’s caring theory. Firstly, I apply kindness and altruistic values when engaging patients and family as this helps me to embrace them, understand the nursing care they require, and ensuring that the required care is provided. Secondly, I believe that nursing care has the capacity to provide what patients need and it is this belief that inspires nurses to provide the required care, and inspires patients to seek professional nursing services. Thirdly, I understand that the principal focus of nursing is developing trust and help in relationships, as this facilitates effective communication that is able to identify and address what the patients’ need. Fourthly, I understand that even as nurses complete their professional responsibilities, they must trust in the other stakeholders to do their part in supporting the delivery of nursing services. An example of how the nursing theory and personal worldview could assist in resolving issues in nursing care would include issues concerning faith. In this example, Bob is a devout Christian who believes in faith healing. He has been diagnosed with advanced colon cancer and has been advised to begin chemotherapy in order to stand a better chance of surviving. However, Bob decides to go against medical advice and instead seek a faith healer. This ends up delaying treatment. Bob finally decides to come for treatment when his health situation worsens. As a nurse, I thought that Bob’s initial decision to seek a faith healthier was stupid. However, better understanding of my worldview and Watson’s caring theory has made me more accepting of Bob as a patient and respectful of his autonomy and decisions. My personal worldview and Watson’s caring theory have helped me to refine my nursing practice and influence future nursing practice. As a Christian, I believe that the Bible offers clear instructions on how I should live my life and deal with others. I believe that, as a nurse, I should not cause intentional harm to others. Watson’s caring theory similarly directs me to genuinely care for others. In applying the two, I expect to develop more meaningful relationships with others within the health care environment.
